Is Undertale as good as advertised?

I've tried it on gamepass for around 30min. It looks and feels like a cheap mobile game trying hard to be clever.
Can some point me when the fun starts or is it basically the jokes/battle system that made this "so special"?

I got to the final fight, but didn't have any health potions so I was stuck trying to backtrack and find some and I just gave up.

Finishing the True Pacifist route made the experience. Worth every penny, but you really have to appreciate the games it's inspired by to have any idea what it's going for.

It's overrated
Have you ever played any of the old Mother games? Do you like old school pixel-style RPGs? Do you like third wall breaking? Do you enjoy crazy good-quality chiptune style music? Do you like memorable characters? Do you like shoot'um up style dodging? Are you more into story than core RPG style battle stuff? Are you okay with your in-game choices permanently affecting your game, even on repeat playthroughs? Undertale is for you!
I love Mother. This game is no Mother. Mother is way better.

I couldn't stand it and I've been playing JRPGs since MSX days. Very try-hard and millenial.
Millennial? Our generation is full of 90's kids. You know, the era of some of the best and most iconic RPGs of all time? I mean, Earthbound was a standout right alongside Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger. It spurred a massive cult community. It made a space for "alternative RPGs." If Undertale is Millennial, then we are awesome.

A game being as good 'as advertised' vs a game being as good as its reception aren't necessarily the same thing.

Can you emotionally attach yourself to the characters and story the game tells? If no, you won't enjoy it and it will feel overrated. If yes, you'll love it.

This game is ALL about whether you give a damn about the characters or not and if that effects your moral standing in the game.

I've seen people just play through normally and not give a damn about the morale system cause they couldn't care less. Likewise, seen people fall in love with every aspect of it because of it's story and characters.

Really it all depends on if you vibe with it's plot or not.

I mean, Toby Fox is 29, right? I grew up playing games in the 80s and 90s, I loved the classic JRPGs, I love a lot of the current JRPGs, I didn't like Undertale because it felt like all those other indie hipster games on Steam that I can't stand.

It's best to go in without any real expectations. I enjoyed it a lot and you'll enjoy it more without buying into expecting it to be this or that.

Tad overrated IMO, soundtrack is amazing though. I still listen to it from time to time.
Pretty much this. The games good, the music is godly and carries teh game IMO. I got to the last boss on the xbox version last month, but I didn't want to do the true pacifist ending again so I stopped.

Honestly it's like a 6-8hr long game so it's worth a playthrough and if you don't like it you didn't waste 20+hrs on it.

I stopped playing at 2 hours or so. It didn't clicked for me. I found it boring, graphics are dated in the bad way, dialogs are hipster nonsense... Not my type of game.

I'm 46, so I lived and loved 8bits era and games back in that time wasn't like Undertale. This is a today hipster game using 8bits resources to produce a game uglier than what it was achievable 25 years ago.

I didn't mind it. It was quirky, which gave it a lot of charm, but it was a little self-indulgent in it's wackiness as well. Good humour, memorable music and characters. I don't think it's nearly as good as the hype would suggest, but it's worth a playthrough.

On a side note: this place is unintentionally hilarious. It's genuinely funny watching some of you get obviously upset that people don't like the same games as you.
