Is your love of gaming waning?

Probably the biggest disappointment is the lack of great console J-RPGs and...um... Nintendo of America. :(

But I kept a opened my mind and adjusted. I didn't realize how much I would end up enjoying Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age Origins for example.

I also got over the hump of being intimidated playing online and got into multiplayer, mostly with the help from my friends and cousins who play constantly online. So I'm not tired of shooters. Yes, I do admit that the industry is over-saturated with them, but there are really amazing ones in that pile like Vanquish, Gears of War, Bulletstorm, Singularity, etc., and seeing games like Shadows of the Damned keeps the genre fresh and interesting.

Fighting games also made a resurgence which is one of the best things about this gen. Super SFIV, Marvel VS Capcom 3, and Street Fighter x Tekken alone are "dream come true games."

With downloadable games and HD, we're also getting amazing 2D or 2.5D platformers. I never would've expect we'd get incredible hand drawn games like Rayman Origin or Hard Corps Uprising.

And finally, I'm completely satisfied with handheld gaming so far. And the potential of the 3DS and Vita has me more excited.

So I don't think its waning. I think with its change of direction, I adjusted as well. Consoles may have changed, but I'm open to that change. Handhelds keep my past and nostalgia alive, so I'm good.

Yes, nostalgia for games I never played right? I buy plenty of NES games I've never played before and I have a great time with a lot of them, though not all of them of course. Famicom Wars is one example of a great NES game that I had never played before I bought it. Though of course, it could be nostalgia for the console as well I guess. I am a huge NES fan after all...

I parry back and forth with myself about this constantly- I still have a genuine love for games, but most recent games only provide some sub-par level of foreplay and I rarely get intimately involved. There have been exceptions- Portal and Braid come to mind- but to say games like that are few and far between is a bit of an understatement.

Then again, maybe it's just because I'm terrible at FPSs.

For modern games, definitely. Imagination is sorely lacking in a lot of current gen games as publishers, with budgets ballooning out of control, are sticking to what works. It's hard to get excited for "new" games when they feel like the last "new" game. They even look the same anymore.

Guess that's why I've always stuck with Nintendo. It's often frustrating to be a fan of theirs since they get a lot of things wrong (online, the importance of visuals, etc.) but at least their gaming experiences give me something new.

Yeah.

Counting only new/current gen hardware (I've gone on garage sprees before).

3DS
NGP
360S
PS3S

Before that my biggest in one year was two current gen consoles (Xbox 360 and DS).

Aye, that's what I'm talking about. Nostalgia isn't restricted to a single series or game.

I'm telling you, the death of a lot of good Japanese games is really hurting my interest levels in games most people are excited about. I just don't like military shooters and most western style games in general, with exceptions, of course.

I have a lot less time for gaming than I had back in my HS/University days, so I find I'm playing a lot more games on my iPhone as opposed to my systems. And I mostly play games now that both me and my fiancee can enjoy together, which limits what I will pick up.

I also seem to spend more time reading about games than playing them. Although I am trying to play some games I've missed over the years (currently playing OOT for the first time on my 3DS).

I'm getting into PC gaming a lot more, especially with all these DD services giving amazing deals pretty constantly. Also getting more intrigued by the handheld systems.

Earlier I said it wasn't for me but every now and then during a dry spell in the year...like now...I get bored of everything.

But seeing that dragon swoop down in the Skyrim live demo got my blood going. A new massive RPG but with epic, spontaneous fights like that is exactly what I need in my gaming life.

and of course Deus Ex too.

Japanese developers will likely continue migrating to handhelds.

Next-gen (current gen technically?) will be way cheaper for you than most.

Indie, Live Arcade/PSN and iOS gaming is thriving at the moment. A constant stream of those games with a high budget, AAA game thrown in every so often make this the best time to be a gamer in a very long time.

1. Too many shooters, and frankly, too much shooting in general

For the former, never been a huge fan of the genre, and it's ridiculous overuse today is staggering. As for the latter, I mean seriously video game industry, is there a need for 90% of games to revolve around shooting something or someone? Is that my age talking perhaps? I'm not sure, but I find it all very overwhelming, and frankly boring now.

There has been an overabundance of shooters since friggin Doom. I remember when Quake 2 came out and thinking to myself that I was getting bored of shooters. No one is forcing you to play the genre. Just play other games.

When it comes down to it, I'd play more games (and do more of everything else I like to do) if I just spend less time on the internet.

Answer is a big fat YES for me.
I get this way at the end of every console generations cycle though. Scary thing is I'm not sure when this gen(360,PS3) is going to end.
I've got Crysis 2 sitting in my disc tray getting no love and many xbla games purchased that I don't feel like finishing, where just a year ago it would be my main priority when I got home from work.
It's not even that anything more exciting has happened with my life it's just the games are mostly been there done that and the graphics certainly aren't wowing me too much anymore.
Oh and I have free games coming to me on PS3 but I haven't bothered powering the thing up since PSN went down.
=/

I'm enjoying games more than ever at this point. There's a huge variety of games and game types so I never really feel like I'm getting bored of one genre or another. If I'm getting bored playing halo I'll grab my 3ds and start playing a dragon quest game or some other RPG.

I felt that way about gaming. The over saturation of shooters, the half baked titles from my favorite franchises and the focus on everything but the games from the "HD" systems soured my experience. I didn't really game the first part of this generation. Most of that had to do with my 360 constantly being broken, the insanely high price of the PS3 and the Wii's unending amount of shovelware and gimmicky games. Sure there were a few gems here and there, but not enough to keep my interest. Consoles didn't deliver this generation.

Then enter in my gaming PC. It rekindled the spark. Now try and take my games away from me! I love it because the focus is the games. There are many developers on the PC that aren't afraid to step away from the formula. You can tell they actually still care about the games, not about charging you a monthly/yearly fee for something that should be free. I just felt this generation of consoles has no heart, while PC has all the soul.

The last thing is Steam. Finally a company who wants my money. They really get it. They aren't trying to sneak in my apartment at night and steal all my pennies. They simply ask for my money and I happily hand it over. Part of the gaming experience is the purchase. If I have a company like MS or Activision attempting to nickel and dime me at every turn that sours my gaming experience. If someone anally rapes you with no lube the ice cream cone afterwards isn't going to be that tasty. That pretty much sums up on how I feel about this generation of consoles. I'm happy I moved to the PC, at least there is lube.

Waning?

Absolutely not.

Everyone goes through spurts where they don't feel like gaming---rather watch TV seasons, movies, read, etc.

That phase just ended for me last week...lasted about 2-3 weeks.

I'm sick of people complaining about there being to many shooters when there is plenty of non shooters out there. Go check out some indie games dammit.

Nah, man. I am becoming increasingly jaded towards certain sectors of gaming, and rightfully so, but I love gaming as much as I ever have.

It's actually growing. I'm playing more games now than I ever have before. And that goes all the way back to the NES. Just so much stuff that I'm interested in these last few years.

LevelNth, interesting thread, good post.

I think the variety of games out there is insane, and I think the problem (if you can call it a problem) nowadays is the amount of content that is coming out. A decade ago - we had 3 main consoles outside of the PC - The PlayStation 2, The Xbox, and the Gamecube, and one main portable system - the Gameboy Advance.

Today - we have the PS3, the PSP, the upcoming PS Vita, the Wii, the upcoming Wii U, the Xbox 360, the Nintendo DS family, the iPhone AND on top of all that we have the downloadable stuff - games exclusively for the DD networks (PSN and Xbox Live) AND all that DLC that extends the life of many games, both single and multiplayer games.

I think the main problem, besides the amount of amazing content, is simply, as we grow older, many of us may have more responsibilities that take up a lot of time, meaning we can play a lot less than we did.

Wait, so you bought the 360 twice? Is that the same for the PS3?

Though it doesn't help when sometimes those other games get turned into shooters.

There are usually only 2 or 3 games I get excited about every year. Used to be dozens.

Then once a year I'm finding a indie/obscure game I never heard of to fall in love with. Like last year that was Minecraft and the year before it was Mount and Blade.

But for the most part, no, I'm getting more into books again than gaming.

it could be if there weren't so many potentially incredible games coming within a year or so.

Dark Souls (guaranteed 1000+ hours of bliss for me, and yes no typo with the 0s), Skyrim, Mass Effect 3, Rage, FFXIII-2, FFvsXIII, The Last Guardian, Journey, Battlefield 3... my mind will be blown many times over.

right now i'm finally playing through Mass Effect 2 and LOVING it. only game on my mind. oh and sometimes i'll boot up Just Cause 2 on the PC, so unbelievably gorgeous at times... incredibly it doesn't feel like a waste of time just staring at a videogame.

so yea my love for games is still there, after 22-23 years of almost daily gaming :)

Money is not an issue, only time.

It's not so much that I do not have any time to play games. The problem is I just don't want to commit to the ten plus hours most games take to finish and the couple of hours play sessions that I would require to enjoy them.

I guess it depends on what sports games you're talking about, but imo, it's gotten worse. Most sports games nowadays are really hardly distinguishable from their predecessor, and there's a lack of competition in general.

Most sports have no more than two games competing as a game, and that's a far cry from what we used to have up until last generation.
FIFA 11 and NBA 2K11 are the best they've ever been. NCAA is compelling every year for fans.. Madden is fairly stagnant so I usually just take a year off here and there. Haven't played it but heard raves about NHL 11. The Show is the best any baseball game of all time despite some fairly limited improvements lately.

Definitely going to disagree here. If you have a PS3 and 360, sports games alone could keep you busy year round.

No, but I have a lot less time to play. Videogames were my first fun thing to do when I was 6-7 to 18-19 years old. Then girls took the first spot. Work/studying took second place. Sports recently took the third place. Videogaming still important but at fourth.

Anyway It's going to go down in my life. I think it's normal once you progress from a kid, to a man. There are lot of other things one person wants to do.

But I'll never, NEVER regret the time I spent playing games. I've a lot of happy memories.

Console gaming is starting to take a pretty hard nose dive for me at the end of this generation. If the companies that manufacture consoles dont become relevant within a year or two its off to the master race for me. Looks like a PC revival due to the complacency of console manufacturers.

I love how so many OPs in those kinds of threads are banned. Hope this OP doesn't get the curse :P

And gaming desires change over time. Human beings grow over time. I've seen older guys come completely back into the fold - it all depends on your life and happenings at the time.

One of the things that I think is going to completely kill it for graphics whores (unless they convert to PC) is that the next-gen consoles (Wii U forward) aren't going to push the bar. The companies (nintendo/sony/ms) realize that graphics only get you so far (and most people just don't care) and they need to appeal to more audiences to generate/keep the cash flow rolling.

And that mentality (first championed by nintendo) will turn so many hardcore gamers off gaming in general. Especially after the reports about the PS4 being casual and not too much stronger than PS3, and Wii U not "dramatically" stronger than current generation.

It's all just hitting a ceiling at this point.

I love gaming as much as ever, however, I've been finding it challenging to want to play anymore. Its wierd, but let me explain.

1.) Gaming is expensive. I simply can't afford multiple consoles. I'm sticking with the PC exclusivley now, although its not my main reason for ditching consoles.

2.) Broadband - I have a connection thats less than 1mbs, and not very stable. I live a few miles from the nearest town which has all sorts of high-speed options, but nothing where my house is located. I have to use a mobile broadband connection, and I am literally a few hundred feet from the edge of the closest towers range. This means right away I can't really play FPS and other games that require <100ms ping times. Another ding against consoles since they don't have much of a selection in multiplayer games outside of shooters that I would like. On the PC I am limited to MMO's and RTS games.

3.) Multiplayer - The fun of multi-player is to group up with your freinds right? Problem is I live in a redneck area where people would rather go to bars, go hunting, watch football, or any other number of things I consider lame, boring, and stupid. I only have one actual real-life friend and he lives a few states away and has no time to game anymore. People I knew online and used to play with on a regular basis have all disappeared, mostly after graduating college and getting married/pursuing careers. People seem to think getting older means you need to have these things called "priorities" that I think are all bullshit.

4.) Industry change for the worse - I'm in the category of people that refuse to buy DLC. I want the traditional full expansion packs, not horse armor that should have been included in the full game when I bought it. I don't mind paying 10-15/mo for an MMO, and at least in the good MMO's I don't feel like I am being ripped off. Combine this with increased size of patches and the move to digital downloading (see my gripe about my internet) and the fact that the internet is being ruined by corporations and government assholes that want to screw the consumer.

Mine was until I built a nice PC 3 years back.

This is what I need to do.

Nearly all of my greatest gaming memories are of being sat in front of the pc. Then my pc got old and instead of upgrading I defected to the consoles.

I think my love of console titles kind of is. In previous generations, a lot of the "big" titles I had to look forward to were really creative and occasionally wacky things from Japan. I've always liked my share of Western games too, but they've just never generated the same level of hype for me, and I've always seen the vast majority of them as kind of being bland and "safe" and for the most part roughly-designed. Unfortunately this generation has seen the decline of Japanese productions (in terms of both quality and quantity), and a rise in an unusually high volume of mostly generic Western big-budget productions.

That's not to say I have some intense anti-Western gaming bias, however. There have been a lot of really fantastic Western-developed console games this generation, more so than there has ever been on consoles, but the problem there is that many of them are also available in a more satisfying form on PC. And as someone who has really warmed up to services like Steam and GOG in recent years, turning on my 360 or PS3 is becoming a progressively rarer occurrence. There are still plenty of console exclusives (Nintendo and Sony's strong first-party stuff comes to mind, as do many XBLA and PSN titles), but overall, the abundance of uniquely console-tailored experiences seems to be on the decline. As such, sitting in front of my TV with a controller just doesn't feel as special or exciting as it used to.

That said, I'm still as completely enamored with gaming as I've always been. There are still lots of console gems, but even more so than that, the quality of a lot of the stuff on download services, handhelds and smartphones has really improved in recent years, and that's where I've been feeling most satisfied of late.

Yes, and even more-so lately...

It's a number of factors contributing to it:

-The decline of Japanese gaming on consoles is the biggest and most direct one. I don't particularly care for many western products, and I'd much rather play on the big screen than handheld.

-To further that, the few games that would be immensely appealing to me are stuck in localization-limbo (Xenoblade, The Last Story, Agito), or we still don't have detailed info
and/or a release date (DQX, the Falcom Vita game, Versus, The Last Guardian)... I guess there's Skyward Sword, maybe Kid Icarus...

-I prefer classic controls, so touchscreen-only, waggle, balanceboard, Kinect games turn me off

-Sick of the number of first and third-person shooters out, sick of the lack of creativity in the console retail space. There's the PC and XBL Indie scene, and I do enjoy these releases, but a lot of them lack the polish of niche games of years bygone.

-I'm in contract to buy a condo, so thoughts right now have been spent on securing my mortgage, buying furniture, what style hardwoods I want to get, learning how to do some DIY stuff...

-After a shitty winter, followed by a rainy and cold spring, the weather here in NY has been pretty gorgeous lately. I'd rather be outside reading, or at the beach, or biking/minigolf/etc.

The lack of much interesting for me at E3 was the big giveaway... gaming is splitting into 2 directions (dudebro shooter or casual/cellphone/fitness/etc "nongame"), neither of which interest me. I guess I'll always have a huge PS1/PS2/PSP/DS/MAME backlog to wade through, but even so it's kinda depressing thinking that those systems are the golden age of the types of games I enjoy, and getting games that even come close to those classics will probably never happen.

There's never gonna be an offline Phantasy Star 5 :(
There's never gonna be a Skies of Arcadia sequel :(
There's never gonna be a Mirror's Edge sequel :(
There's never gonna be another Chrono :(
There's never gonna be a Shenmue 3 :(
There's never gonna be a western RPG with a story as interesting as Planescape: Torment :(
There MIGHT be a Valkyrie Profile 3 but I'm not holding my breath

QFT.

Sports games have never been better than they are today. NBA 2k11 is a massive success for a reason. Same goes for FIFA 11. And I love Online Dynasties in NCAA & Madden.

I still love gaming, but my love of the game industry is at an all time low - and this includes the time I was a shamed out of the game industry and quit buying games for six months. This past E3 was just two or three genres and almost entirely sequels. Few, if any, JRPGs, strategy games, or turn based games. Never before have I felt the game industry deserving or being in need of a crash, but I wish for an apocalypse to bring about a rebirth now.

I've found that I have to make an effort to rekindle my love of gaming in the face of such a dismal immediate future.

Well, honestly I'm not sure.

I do feel that old urge to play something but nowadays It feels like it's harder to actually get interested in, well, anything. Besides a few games coming later this year or in the next, nothing is really pulling my interest.

This made me sad. I do understand that Skies of Arcadia was so well wrapped it doesn't really need a sequel but still, one of the best rpg I've ever played.

Altough I think there is a Valkyrie Profile 3 on the DS. Never really played it though.

Nostalgia is a powerful thing.

I'm not old enough (23) to have real nostalgia for the NES, yet there are a good number of great NES games that I've played for the first time in the past few years.

And the arcade games! I didn't play many arcade games growing up, but I've been discovering some of the absolute greatest action games this hobby has in the past half of a decade or so by reviewing the history of Japanese arcade games. Many of the standouts are significantly better than the most critically praised 2011 games.

Do you really think this is nostalgia? What do I have to be nostalgic about? Is it so unlikely that I consider the games to be that good?

All I have right now is a Wii and a 3DS so I don't play as much as when I had an Xbox. I'm still playing the games I like though and am staying away from shooters. I think everyone is a little sick of shooters right now.

I don't know. During college, yes. Now that I'm home for the summer and have time for such luxuries, hell to the fucking no.

Yeah, I kind of feel like you do. For me it's that there are too many sequels... I just can't get excited about playing games anymore. It's not that I want to get out of gaming, but there just aren't any games on the horizon that I'm looking forward to. Everything seems stale.
