It looks like PS3 cover banners are going blue

As much as I like the color blue (well, the more standard blue Sony's been using rather than Nintendo's cyan or whatever) I feel this just makes them too similar to PS4 covers even if the thinner top plus blu-ray case bit still keeps it distinct.

Do appreciate them pulling the "only on PlayStation" to the top bar though, and either way at least the PS3 had a switch already whereas it was actually kind of disappointing that for the PS2 they kept it the same throughout until they decided to add some "Only on Playstation" crap right at the end of its life.

This might be bad for those that like to have an organized and clean row of games in their shelves. Other than that I don't think it's a big deal. While I'm not worried I hope PS4 keeps the same style in the upcoming years.

I think this is will do more bad than good. The 1st change was good because it was early in it's life and the PS3 was in serious need of getting rid of it's old image. But now the PS3 lived a good long life with a positive image, and making it identical to PS4 and Vita banners can cause brand confusion (most notably with PS4 because the boxes are the same size).

This makes more sense than having different fonts and color schemes for each platform/version, I think.

I don't think so. There are three platforms, not one unified one. They should be labeled and branded accordingly.

You're messing up my tidy and shelved PS3 retail game collection, Sony! The spines are going to be so jank--Original Spiderman font, revision, and now blue revision.

ARGH!

PS4 cases are entirely blue though so I don't think there'll be that much confusion.

PS3 - clear case + blue
PS4 - blue case + blue
PS Vita - small blue case + blue

Looks good but will cause further clashing between game cases in my collection I'm sure

Guess I can organize it by release date ugh

Sony:

"Let's take the box designs of that system we're still supporting and make them look as similar to our other system that doesn't feature backwards compatibility as possible! It's genius!"

Good job i stopped buying previous gen games, otherwise my OCD would be worse then it is now with the whole spiderman red spine logo and the black and white slim logo. Consistency damn it, i want it in my collections.

It looks better than any of the previous PS3 branding, but one problem is that now there'll be:
- Vertical bars for spiderman font initial PS3 games
- Horizontal grey bars for most PS3 games
- Horizontal red bars for greatest hits
- Horizontal blue bars for games releasing after the system is being phased out

It's going to be worse if the UK and other PAL countries get it. We have vertical Spider-Man, horizontal black bar, silver box with yellow horizontal and vertical bars for Platinum, and red spine and border with black horizontal bar for Essentials already.

Since they're obviously going for the Persona color scheme, they should change the PS4 game boxes while they're at it

Strange that they would do that. Seems like it may confuse consumers.

Wouldn't be a big deal if PS3 games worked on PS4.

what if they do once gaikai rolls out. they let you upgrade a ps3 version of certain games to a ps4 version for 10$ as long as the disc is in the tray or you can play the ps3 version on the ps4 through gaikai for free would be a good idea if they implement it.

3 different type of covers for a single system? Thanks for making our collections look like a fucking mess.

I don't think so. There are three platforms, not one unified one. They should be labeled and branded accordingly.

But three platforms owned by the same company that want you to do the same thing across their hardware - play games.

Having three separate fonts and looks makes the games feel like separate entities and doesn't encourage brand recognition or favor.

It'd be like Apple offering different packaging and fonts for their iPhones, iPads, iPod, and Macs. Keeping them under one typography and color scheme/font layout unifies the brand and allows consumers to identify that the product they're purchasing right now is from the same company that they bought the other thing from.

This develops brand loyalty and often times puts the consumer at ease that they're buying a reliable product because they've purchased items from this company in the past.

This leads to more sales, stronger word of mouth sales, yadda, yadda, yadda...

Those are good things for a company.

so dumb. so now I'll have the really old banner, the kinda old banner, the greatest hits, and now the new banner.

Well i guess I won't have the new blue banner becasue i don't plan on buying any more ps3 games. Except maybe MLB since I'm a sucker and can't wait a couple of months.

Colors and words so much confusion. Poor soccer moms buying ps3 games for their ps4 if only the color was black instead of blue

First spin Spiderman band, then black PS3 to now Blue PS3... This combined with two Planinum/bargain brand (silver+yellow) or red for the US... horrible mess.
I miss this:

It looks good, but I need consistency. Now I'll have spiderman ps3 logo, black ps3 logo, and blue ps3 logo boxes on my shelf. So annoying.

Dumb Idea. Mass brand confusion imminent
Because PS3 and PS4 are so similar to each other. It's not the Wii and WiiU. Or the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. It's something that Sony has always done and is super obvious when you look at the case.
PS4 > PS3. The average consumer is stupid. But not that stupid.
Black was cooler, but this looks alright.
Same. I'll only be buying Persona 4 on PS3 so I guess this is alright. I'll have 1 of each gen of PS3 box covers.
Ripping of Wii U goddamnit Sony come up with something original once in a while, will you?
Hehehe.

Not a fan. The black with the second PS logo always reminded me of what the covers should've looked like coming straight from the PS2. Ah, well.

Looks good, but man does this suck for anyone who wants uniformity with their PS3 cases. You'd think Sony could just pick one design and stick with it.

Yeah.... I think this is a bad idea. I understand the desire to have a unified brand image but this will look confusing as hell in a store.
