Itagaki warns against playing Devil's Third with Wii U GamePad

Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden developer Tomonobu Itagaki has said that it shouldn’t be played with the Wii U’s primary USP – the GamePad.

“Why do I recommend Pro-controller?” a Facebook post said. “I never wanna discount standard tab-controller. But, Devil's Third is a super speedy game. So tab-controller has following disadvantages:

“1. Four face buttons are positioned overcrowding. So you easily press the wrong button. In that case, you will die.

2. Distance of two analogue sticks are too far apart. So it's quite difficult for you to feel/grasp the battlefield.

3. Devil's Third is a game you play a long time. The standard tab-controler is too heavy for such use.”

Developer Valhalla Game Studios followed up with a message to the media warning against GamePad use.

“As Itagaki mentioned in his Facebook column, please use Pro controller along with a USB keyboard when you preview Devil's Third. Tablet controller is not recommended,” it said.

A Gamepad ALONGSIDE a keyboard? I don't think the previewers will like that very much.

Also what the hell "the analog sticks are too far apart" and his reasoning.

Heck, just "wut" to this whole thing.

I'm sure that using a pro controller is ideal (as it is for most games designed for a traditional button layout), but those complaints about the gamepad seem overblown. I've played a decent amount of both Bayonetta and Smash U with the gamepad with literally zero issues.

I've never, ever heard anyone complain about the buttons being cramped, and I don't really know what he's talking about. Stick placement is a preference thing, obviously.

At 30fps it isn't that speedy.

Seriously though... keyboard?!

It's either salvage the game for the Wii U or don't release it at all and waste all that development. It's a shame since this game is clearly not gonna be what he envisioned
 
I personally find the button layout on the Pro controller really uncomfortable. Having the buttons below the right stick is just wrong.

It has been pretty clear from the get-go that Itagaki and Valhalla were scrambling to find a new publisher once THQ folded and I imagine Nintendo offered them a lucrative deal at the time because they wanted games like this and Bayo 2 to attract the hardcore crowd.

I mean, it's not like Bayo 2 uses the gamepad in any meaningful way either. No one cares about that silly touch screen mode.

Gyro aim is nice. Though the DS4 can do that...if devs would ever allow it, FFS.

It's weird at first but you get used to it, or at least I did. I find it as/more comfortable than the 360 controller if you exclude the R/L buttons which are just really bad on the Pro. It's also pretty light, which is impressive, but I actually prefer the heft of a 360 or at least PS4 controller.
 
Odd reasoning, the face buttons are in fact more crowded on the Pro Controller, and the further apart analog sticks means your arms and hands are closer to their natural resting position.

I guess you can't argue it weighs slightly more, but unless you "upgraded" to the larger battery I doubt anyone would notice.
 
Considering I played and beat Ninja Gaiden on the Wii U solely using the Gamepad, I think its fine. But I guess this confirms that Devil's Third wouldn't use the second screen for anything cool :(
 
Whose idea was the gamepad gimmick? I know Nintendo fans love it for off TV play but it really is second-rate as far as being a controller is concerned. I can't imagine how much cost it adds to the WiiU.
 
I said this in the other thread, but complaining about the sticks placement for the gamepad as opposed to the pro controller is dumb. The placement is the exact same for both unless you use your left thumb for the right stick or something
 
please ignore the controller that can successfully incorporate both standard controller inputs and a keyboard in favor of using a standard controller and a keyboard

Wait does Wii U even support usb keyboards?

This game is one of the most hilarious business collaborations I've ever seen in this industry.

Nintendo: Your game's shit.
Itagaki: Your console's shit.

They're like 50 Cent and Young Buck or something... it's amazing. How did this partnership ever happen?

I have none of those issues and I played through Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, and Ninja Gaiden 3 just fine. Only way I don't use the gamepad for D3 is if there is wiimote/nunchuk support.
 
The Wii U pad could have been fantastic.

Imagine traversing the world of Skyrim with the map and your inventory on your gamepad.
Imagine tinkering with your Diablo 3 character with perfection on your gamepad.
Imagine blazing through your guns in Borderlands on your gamepad.


But oh...well...
 
There you go; if you think the game's bad, it's just because your controllers sticks are too far apart and you can't grasp the battlefield. Better luck next time, reviewers.
 
I don't think I've ever heard a developer for an exclusive game say don't use the primary control hardware 'cause it's a bit shit.

It's frankly unbelievable.
 
The pro controller is amazing and Itagaki didn't do anything interesting with the game pad so yeah. I'd recommend the pro controller for Bayonetta 2 as well

Well if they hadn't wasted all that silicon on BC and upped the specs they those things could have been possible.
