It's 2015. Why Can't I make a decent black character in bloodborne?

I'm not saying that black people have to look a certain way. Every race intrinsically has a certain amount of variance. The issue is that the character creation tools don't permit making one specific type of person, which happens to be people who are "traditionally black". You can certainly make characters that look black, but it isn't something that's properly facilitated by the options presented within the editor.

Lots of people in this thread are basically saying that lack of "traditionally black" features == white person with "black face".

Could someone who succesfully made a black skinned character tell me what their skin values are? I'm trying to create a black female but I just can't seem to get the tone right. It usually becomes too red.

Judging from the pics of the game it seems you cannot even create a decent looking normal human being. The character creator looks way off imo.

Exactly. It's a Souls character creator. I usually consider it a victory if I can create something that looks human.

I see what you mean, OP.

I don't think the character in BB is supposed to look like you or anyone else in the modern world for that matter. If that was their intention, then they failed for everyone, not just black people.

Yeah, Souls character creators are fairly infamous for not being super great. You know your editor has problems when each iteration spawns some memes. :lol

They have gotten a little bit better with each one, but I still don't think they're there yet. With the Souls games it wasn't as huge a deal due to Soul/Undead form and the dozens of armours that completely hide your character anyway, but with Bloodborne's lighter armour options (from what I've seen), the created character is a bit more prominent compared to the armour he's wearing.

Dragon's Dogma had a better character creator.

I find it strange that Saint's Row 2 still has the most flexible character creation of any game I have played.

A nice wavy low cut, a Jordy laforge or even a jheri curl option (time traveling ex-pimp turned victorion private eye) would be nice now and then. Dynasty warriors and their love of cornrows is amusing and welcome.

I say this for about 80% of the games I play with a CAC mechanic....
Word, dragon age inquisition's solution was "that one african american face" every black youtuber had it, hilarious.

All the characters look weird in games like this regardless of skin color to me, but Bloodborne is the closest to letting you do something somewhat good looking. You just have to tweak it a lot.

Hair options woefully lack all around though.

Eh I mean it's not really the games fault if you can't make the character look how you want. As proven with the images on page 1 you can definitely make a good looking black character with enough time in the editor, it's not like the developers have some inherent prejudice.

I made a pretty OK looking black character. Skin tone should be a mix of green and red, balance it with blue as you need. Generally you should tweak it so that the nostril setting is a little wider, nose portrusion is less, lip setting a little thicker / mouth a bit higher and then bring up the pink on the lips if they look grey or dark black. Good luck, it can be done!

The hair and facial features (specifically the nose) of the second character look more Caucasian than black. For those reasons, the character looks Indian or, less tastefully, "like a white guy in blackface" rather than black.

The second character is bald - as opposed to having straight hair - and seems to have "blacker" facial features, although that could be due to the lighting.

I respectfully disagree, assuming you are American I think what you believe are black people traits (big nose is the most common example) are really just a general image of African-americans, which mostly descend from west Africans, there is a lot of diversity in facial features among black people. But yeah, that's another discussion for another time.

Who'd have thought that Japanese developers, working in a country with little to no cultural or racial diversity, would not know how to correctly emulate racially different physical features?

I'm pretty sure it doesn't have anything to do with them being Japanese. I mean, just try creating any variety of east-Asian character, and see how far you get.

Damn I forgot how much of a BAMF Douglass was, look at that dude.

lol, it's not the dark ages anymore, Japan gets plenty of exposure to black people albeit sometimes skewed.

The character creator is just bad. They would be ok if they had something half as sweet as the Black Desert character creator where you can pretty much create what you want.

So my girlfriend got me a copy of bloodborne yesterday and im like sweet. I boot it up and i see there is a character creator. Now i usually dont dabble in such things but i decide I want to make a black character to represent myself. A few mintues later i find myself severly disappointed at the options. I cant believe shit like this is still an issue and i honestly have half a mind to return the fucking game. I really dont care in games where the default character is already white. Fine. But how can you have a character creator that doesnt allow you to accurately represent all races?

If anyone has instructions on how to make a decent black character im all ears and i would very much appreciate it.

I'm with you here. I'm a lefty and none of the Souls games allow you to make left-handed protagonists despite there being 65,536 degrees of facial attenuation or whatever the number is.

Here's how you solve the problem: the Souls games (and maybe Bloodborne; haven't played it) take place in hell, and we (black people, left-handers) will be going up, not down, when we die. So that's why we don't exist in these games.

That's funny because they sure as hell have white people down to an art. I've seen more white characters in Japanese games than I've seen Japanese characters in Japanese games.

It's really not that difficult to create a feature set for black people and other races. You just have to try and care about that portion of your fanbase.

Title should be:

"It's 2015. Why Can't I make a character that doesn't look like a caveman in bloodborne?"

It's been this way since Demon's Souls. Endless customization but unless you have the time and know how you are going to look like a caveman.

I played a lot with it....
The tool is not the best to handle and you need to switch the rigth switches (by memory the most important one to change would be the ones in facial balance) but it is feasible
I will try it when i go back home.

I think part of the problem is the character model looks like crap UNTIl you are in the game world with proper aa and lighting.

That and it's a really crappy character creator.

I'm so confused at your complaint. You gave no examples of exactly what is wrong.

I think character creator options for anything other than white in most games is pretty poor. We actually just recently started getting decent female options, and the last few years I've been going with females because I'm tired of playing with white males.

Options for black characters especially in anything other than sports games is a joke. Most of the time they look awful. I think its sort of a microcosm of how gaming is so skewed towards white males.

I'm still waiting for a game with a black male lead, let alone a black female lead. They could have easily made the main character in a game like Dying Light black, just for diversity's sake.

For now, I'll pick a female in any game that gives me a character creator and the option to.

I really wanted to make someone like Frederick Douglass, but the hair options are too limited. Instead I ended up with what's basically a Black version of Dumbledore with mutton chops and spectacles. I actually think it ended up being decent, imo.

Frederick Douglass lookalike would have been perfect for the setting/time period though.

Woh, someone please make Douglas in game. I'm no good with this stuff.

Funny you should mention black people. Ive yet to see a black NPC in Bloodborne.
The game's set in a Victorian London like setting, you can't expect to see many people of colour. I don't think they did it out of ignorance, for example there are no Asian/Japanese characters either...

Yeah the nose options are terrible. Even with the widest/flattest setting noses still look super narrow and pointy.

Edit:
So lean into it like I did!

I might agree if Bloodborne wasn't a big step back in this specific regard. Half of my Souls characters are black. I don't think that's going to happen with Bloodborne and it is the character creator's fault.

here an quick attemp at doing a black people
(only front i mess my ps4 copy)

edit : ingame (cheek too skinny)

what lacks and what make it painfull is that there is no asian/balck default profile to start from and it needs a lot of find settingfs that fit what you want

Is it bad that the first thing I notice is the horribly overdone chromatic abberation in this pic? Also what's up with the cheeks of your character, almost looks like a caricature o.O

Looking straight like a Polo Ralph Lauren model

Pretty sure we're years away from Blak Desert-levels of creation for most of the other RPGs.

OP, can you post a picture of yourself or a celebrity that looks like you and see if anyone can get close?

I don't expect the character creator in Bloodborne to get able to create every sort of face out there, but maybe with group effort we can nail down some starting points to share with everyone

Thanks this thread inspired me to make a black character too. It's kind of sad when I stopped to think how few main characters I've played as have been black. I think he's... Well, not that great but loosely inspired by Keegan Michael Key and I'm ready to kill some beats.
