It's 2015. Why Can't I make a decent black character in bloodborne?

XD biggest reason I usually play as female character. Shit if I can't make a guy that I'd identify with, then I can at least make a good looking chick to play as...

Only good hair options are bald and almost bald. Luckily you will probably wear a hat throughout the game, but it still sucks.

Come to think of it, I haven't seen anyone try a Chinese Asian character. Is that possible in the game?

I made one. Anything is possible if you put in the time. For example, a little earlier I made a character based on the topic of this thread:

Now originally the color tone was actually pretty good, but then it got a little weird when using the "similar faces" button a few times. I was too bored by then to go back and adjust the levels back to fix it. But the colors can be whatever you want.

Still, I think it makes the point: you get out of it, what you put into it. And while the game is at fault for not giving folks a better base to begin with, the tools are there to make whatever you want if you put the time/effort into it.

Edit: They did however really screw people over on hair options.

Going by what passes as a realistic depiction of a black person, a lot of people here probably think this looks like a real black guy:

No offense, but that looks like a white female in black face. I appreciate the effort but calling people whiners when the indeed has a terrible base for black characters is almost just ad bad the guy who told OP to stop trying to be offended.

That's probably the most serviceable Rihanna you'll ever see, but I agree with you on the blackface thing. The people saying "What's the problem?" to this

are part of the problem.

Now you're just making shit up. Who looked at those pics and said, "what's the problem?".

No one. Huge difference between reactions to mediocre results from a CC tool and people literally in blackface. Worst post in the thread.

But how can you have a character creator that doesnt allow you to accurately represent all races?

Sorry, but that's asking way too much. I'm not familiar with Bloodborne's character creator, and maybe you have a valid complaint. But from the screenshots in this thread, it looks like you can get a decent variety of results. If they look ugly, that's just bad art, not racism.

Shouldn't have to spend half an hour just to get close to one race.

Sliders move slow as shit makes it even worse

R1/L1 - moves them by increments of 10.

The nose and brows/eyes is just impossible to get right.

Drake for example... that nose can't be replicated...the nostrils you can get right but not the nose bridge.

Its tough because of the pure color shader that does not factor skin tone very well. But it can be done. I've made a decent black character, you just have to play around with it a bit more.

first thing I made was a skinny black girl who was quite pretty actually... then I found out you could make the skin bright purple............so my alt is a purple girl.

... then I rerolled and ended up with a blonde...... sorry op.

I understand the criticism about the lack of hairstyles*, but other than that, it's a bogus criticism IMO, plenty of counter-examples in this thread and the other. The character creator has tons of very specific sliders for every aspect of the face that you can tweak, you can make almost anything.

It might take some moderate amounts of effort to make someone look good, but that's true of any race, really.

* And hell, my hair style is pretty much never available and I'm a white woman, so I can't ever create myself either, just something vaguely close. :P

i have literally never seen a good character come out of a souls charter creator... ever

so
The hell? I've seen tons of great ones. Most people just don't put in the effort but when you do, you can get really nice results. And that's fine if they don't want to bother, but all my Souls characters have looked from "pretty good" to "awesome", if I may say so myself.

Yep, that's a black character alright.

I know the common retort in Souls/Bloodborne for people having problems with it is 'git gud', but I never thought that would need saying about the character editor as well.
Hahahaha, perfect.

a) Someone said he spent 10 min, and I'm sure that was for a quality final result more than just "getting close to one race". I spent way more than that on my own character but that's just because I'm a bit of a perfectionist.
b) Hit R1 and L1 and they move pretty fast

Reading through every post, it seems the complaint comes down less to "race" and more to "hair".

You'd have a strong point if you wanted to argue that you couldn't make a black person, so you wanted a refund, and that it's a must-have inclusion for any and all character-createable games. Completely agree.

You'll be laughed out of store/court/interwebtubes if you wanted to argue that you should receive a refund because a customisable game doesn't have a hairstyle you prefer.

I'm not being dismissive of your unhappiness, but most games have pretty shoddy hair options. Generally, you've got to make do (rather than make a 'do....heyyy oh) or throw a hat on.

I think that tying hair styles to race to try and make an argument less baseless is pretty poor form.

are you really comparing people trying to make decent black characters with a limited character creator to real life blackface?

are you serious?

so if i chose the darkest skin tone in pokemon xy and considered my character black, it means i can't tell the difference between it and real black people and think that shit you posted is a-okay?

I think the main issue with the BB editor isn't that you can't make black people it's that you have to fiddle about a lot to get black features. When I was making my guy (I wanted him to look like me) I couldn't get a normal size nose and a rounder face for the life of me so I gave up and leaned into it by making an older, gangly looking man with a big nose. The hair options are also pretty terrible too (and I expected better facial hair options). The default (and presets) in BB seem to lean toward big nosed gangly man (for male that is, not made a female character yet) and to get out of that style of character requires fiddling in the options to make the features right. People have shown you can make black looking black characters in the creator (and also shown you can break it and make hideous monsters that would fit right in with the enemies).

I remember seeing this thread way back when, before I had Bloodborne. Now I have Bloodborne, and I am experiencing this struggle first hand.

This thread managed to make some very nice looking dark-skinned characters, but even having them for reference, I'm struggling to replicate them.

Specifically, I can't make brown skin. It always comes out red.

What I was really hoping is that some of the people who made the system work could post a picture of their skin tone sliders. Because all this red skin is really off putting to me.

I know it can be done better. Can anybody help?

Here's a brown-skinned middle-aged lady I made a while ago (sorry for all the blood spatter on the second pic xD):

I probably saved her in my favourites, so if you think this skin tone is acceptable or close to what you're looking for, I'll try to get the sliders for you.

It's a little more yellow than I am looking to make, BUT, this could be a helpful starting point. If it's not a lot of trouble, could you share your sliders? Text only is fine.

Came across this thread a few days back and decided to mess around with the CC to see if it really was difficult to create a black character. This is what I was able to come up with.
In terms of hair options the CC really is limited, and it definitely isn't the most accessable editor. Having said that, I'm satisfied with how my guy turned out.

So it's 2016... and this time it's Dark Souls III :P I've been in the character creation screen for about an hour now (half an hour last night, half an hour today) and this is what I have so far:
What do you guys think? Does it look like a white person just with dark skin? Any feedback would be appreciated!

Once you start to mess with sliders in the Soul's games it's difficult to make any character look normal again, I found. It doesn't matter what skin colour they are, the slides distort facial properties to unrealistic proportions and it's a matter of getting them all into normal ranges to get them looking normal again.

It's rough, that's why I usually just pick the default and change his hair.

But it can be done, as others above have demonstrated. It's just difficult because the editor - while flexible - is actually pretty crap.

Looks good but maybe more like an Indian person with particularly dark skin maybe? Which might be fine if that's what you're going for. Either way she looks cool.

A friend made a decent looking black dude, I'll try to find a pic later.

If we're moving on to Dark Souls III with this topic then this was my attempt.

I'd say that it's certainly a step up from Bloodborne. The hairstyles were the biggest hurdle for DkSIII, I think.
