It's 2016, and I have questions about NeoGAF

I read a "PM a forum administrator" there not "PM me". Just saying.

He can also PM me, that's fine, I'd just submit a request myself. It just seems easier to me to cut out the middleman by PMing a forum administrator since I can't personally process those requests.

2. How do the little member titles work? Some people just have "member", and others have weird things under them. Users have said mods(?) set them. What's up with that, do you ask for one or something? Is it assigned to you just randomly?

Only thing that bugs me is the lower case S in my name.

I'm just being snarky for being snarky... :P

But if I ever have to PM a mod now I'll PM you, since you are so nice. :)

First rule of GAF: Never ask to be tagged.

doesn't work anyway, I try that once every three months

now I keep track of the forum activity of like half the mod team - see what threads they post in, learn their posting habits, find out more about their interests (and their weaknesses). I feel this is the ticket to success

No regrets.

Is there a way to find out how long a Junior status lasts actually? I'm signed up to do the Zelda U OT...

conflicting info but i've been told in no uncertain terms by a trusty individual that unless it is deemed that your threads would be a positive contribution, then your status as second class citizen is indefinitely extended towards infinity, thus why i'm quick to doubt any mention of precisely timed returns to full citizenship.

I don't know how it works but it looks like you've been perma'd. But as dawg said, you can always make up a post then have someone else post it for you.

I have a question about
Click here if your browser does not automatically redirect you.
What purpose does the delay serve? I assume I'm not the only one that always clicks the link immediately every time.

Kinda glad I wasn't around for that GAF iteration, was never a fan of that logo. That happened shortly after I was perma'd, right?

Let me just check the calendar where I track all NeoGAF member bans and I'll get right back to you on that one.

I heard we were all a part of the SJW hivemind.

SJW mods are my favorite mods

Edit:

Since so many mods are reading this thread, why can't we click the orange logo when we search our own posts to see what is new in that thread? It's my most wanted feature at the moment.

That would be hilarious since, if I'm thinking of the right Crab, he spends more time banned than active.

Nonetheless, #Crab4Mod2016

The best carpenters know what it feels like to be on the other side of the hammer

Not sure about permanent, I received this PM from the late Opiate shortly after getting Junior'd:

"I can tell you that the junior'ing is not permanent, but it is also not highly temporary. Do not expect to be unjuniored this month. I have little information at the moment, so I will see if I have more info to give you in the future."

Anyway yeah, if need be I'll have someone else post the OT.

Well.... From first post to this post. Am glad I joined. GAF is where I come for my news. Almost always its ahead of the press.

Great forum, interesting insights and gaming mischief too boot.

Keep up the good work!

Okay so for everyone out of the loop, I decided to just explain what NeoGAF Gold is.

So for a while, I was like you guys, and I was certain that Gold wasn't real and that it was some joke made up to mock XBL or PS+ or some shit like that. Haha, very funny guys. There's even the little trick that changes the logo to some corny "NeoGAF Gold" thing when you type the Konami code on this site. Let me just tell you; it's all to throw you off.

The features you guys cram for? Quote searching and gifatars? I have those. And so do lots of others. And it's all because we were invited to the closed beta for Gold.

(I had to take a pic with my phone. The beta is able to detect if a screenshot is taken.)

There's also a whole other discussion section after Gaming and OT. The members only area is pretty much just pages upon pages of insider info. It's a GAFers wet dream. I'm not kidding when I say that. It's pretty much just an open developer forum; games in development, screenshots of announced games, new hardware, etc.

What the admins have done is paid some of the industry's best devs to share their secrets with us. Each thread has it's own NDA for crying out loud. I, unfortunately can't talk about what I've seen for obvious reasons. Let's just say one particular thread posted this week gave full details about a piece of hardware that rhymes with "MX".

That's precisely the reason no one wants to admit Gold is real; it's too good to give up. And it's kind of a meta-joke now; people thinking it isn't real. Wake up. I'm tired of hiding it. Enough is enough.

Archive this post. Screenshot it. Don't be surprised if it's gone within the hour. I'll most definitely get banned for this post, but it's soooo worth it.

Also if this pic is real... what do we think about CBOAT dropping the 2017 PS4 game list?

One thing I noticed is that GAF mods seem to be internet famous enough to be mentioned elsewhere, which I think is kinda cool, actually.

These threads are fun and informative. Quick question for the mods:

- is there any way you could automatically list the length of user bans and possibly which TOS rule was broken (for instance, x user is banned y months for making racist remarks)? I'd imagine it would free up some time for you since people wouldn't PM you to find out or clog up threads with ban speculation. Thanks in advance!

I recall getting my tag in of Bish's (annual?) tag threads. I use to work at a grocery store (years ago now heh) -- I still had it in my profile and I guess he worked with what he had. I'm pretty boring so I've been stuck with it ever since for lack of a better alternative.

I read a "PM a forum administrator" there, not "PM me". Just saying.

I didn't know he wasn't a forum admin, wasn't aware that the red members had different rights. Other than Evilore that is.

He can also PM me, that's fine, I'd just submit a request myself. It just seems easier to me to cut out the middleman by PMing a forum administrator since I can't personally process those requests.

I can PM a forum admin directly, but the link you provided doesn't work for me, hence the confusion.

He's not a forum admin. Check the link he posted.

The link doesn't work for me, I'm on mobile. Chrome.

Late? What happened to opiate?

He didn't pass away or anything right...?
I hope not, Opiate is/was a decent guy.

Thinking back, there's been a few deaths of NeoGAF members that have hit the community hard, and rightly so. I hate to say this, but I can't recall the names, but I can picture their avatars - and their threads - as clear as day. It really is a shame to see such good people die, and it amazes me how we, as a community, come together to celebrate their lives and to mourn their deaths.

Opiate's not dead. He's just no longer a mod.

Yeah.
I'm glad Opiate's alive.

I miss Gaborn.

There was another member who was ill and detailed his illness in a thread. It was heartbreaking to read.

This has been asked about for many years. A lot of us posted on SomethingAwful concurrently or before or after GAF so we have some sense of what that looks like. My sense is most of the other moderators I've discussed it with have been slightly against it, but I don't remember exactly who came down on what side. I'm in the middle.

But I just wanted to push back on what you think the outcome would be. It is highly unlikely that a change of that type would free up time or unclog threads.

The bans we currently need to spend the most time going over to clear up misconceptions are ones where people are absolutely 100% clear on what happened but simply disagree with the rules. For example, probably the most common structure of a ban appeal looks something like this: User is banned for telling another user to fuck off and die. User has 5 previous bans for console war stuff, most for yelling at other users. User's appeal consists of allegations mods are biased against their preferred platform, a list of 5 year old posts from other users followed by "See these people didn't get banned and they did it" (in general the linked posts did get banned at the time, but also the users in question had shorter previous records or the things they're doing in the linked posts weren't as bad as the things the user just got banned for), and then a threat to quite GAF. This is not a rational discussion that's cleared up with more info. It's someone angry they got banned.

With respect to thread derails, same thing. The derail is typically not "hey, what happened". I agree that occasionally people are confused about what happened, especially if someone was simultaneously walking the line in several different threads at once. But mostly the derail is "knowing what happened, let's either agree with the ban or passive aggressively snipe about how bad GAF moderation is".

So, I don't think what's driving things is confusion about the rules or lack of clarity about the bans, but rather natural human curiosity and the fact that if you post on a forum all day every day you form relationships with other posters, even the ones you've never directly interacted with. That's fine, I get it.

Thanks so much and it makes sense. Just curious if it would be a win win but you and the mod team seem to have discussed it in great detail already.

Jesus. Please tell me these (I know it's an example but still) aren't everyday occurrences, or even monthly for something so stupid.

I can see it's bad enough anyway though.

You click? Haha, I've never actually clicked before.

But the same thing goes for most online forums, I assume (at least all the ones I go to).
