• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

It's 2016, and I have questions about NeoGAF

Also, since a horizontal size change won't really change the posting like that, would increasing from 100x120 to 120x120 be completely out of the question, even in the near/far future?

Tried it, didn't like the page aesthetics with 120x120.

I'm always trying to figure out what thread and when I got my tag changed as it seems to change every couple of months.

I'm just curious what I say that triggers any of the change.

It would be cool to look back on a history of your tags too.

EDIT - I would change my avatar to be funny but the last time I messed with something a mod put into my tag (some link to a post that I then edited), I got the flaming jackass tag for a while lol :(

- Old avatars being recycled into porn
Holy crap, this actually happened in the past? I had assumed some of the other problems myself as the core reasoning to why offsite avatar hosting wouldn't ever be a thing, but something like this sounds like it should come with some legal ramification for the image hosting service in the event it happens (since legally you have to be 18+ to view pornography, and only 13+ to register for GAF).

We didn't have the porn thing happen with avatars, but we have had it in threads (tinypic recycled old photo urls pretty frequently) and it's certainly possible to have it happen with avatars.

Out of curiosity, is there any particular reason the site doesn't use HTTPS? The current setup is a little worrying from a security perspective.

Damn, before this thread I thought there were only like 4-5 mods. Now I realize they're everywhere. Im scared.

plz don't take my Destiny jokes the wrong way, o great mods

I think gromph was talking about looking into deploying it, but what in particular is your concern? Login requests being intercepted + password reuse allowing people to exploit your account on other sites?

Passwords being transmitted as part of a plaintext message (even if they're obfuscated, since whatever value the server accepts is effectively the password) makes it relatively easy for people to impersonate a user via a retransmission-style attack. It could allow unauthorized people to see private data.

Password reuse is a thing, too, but I'm more worried about what they could do on this site.

EDIT: HTTPS also helps protect against attackers modifying the response mid-flight. Some ISPs like to take advantage of this to inject ads, though it can be use more maliciously, too.

Mods and their perks...

HTTPS would be nice.

One thing I do like about this forum is the authentication/validation process for new members. It keeps the spambots and trolls at bay, unlike other forums - heres looking at you, PSU. In regards to the avatars, 100x120 is the perfect size. PSU allows 180x180 or something like that. It's distracting and annoying.

I wanna take this opportunity to thank everyone for making NeoGAF great [again]. I'm still pretty new here (2015 member yo) but it's been a fun ride. I've kind of abandoned the e-turf I used for close to seven years because this place is strict enough that it doesn't descend into the offensive nonsense that plagues that site. And yet GAF is still every bit as entertaining (if not more so, even if I'm not in on nearly as many inside jokes and such as I was there).

I also want to ask the mods something that's been on my mind since I joined. I applied around... I don't know, March of last year, and then sometime in the middle of the year I was reminded that I'd never been approved. I sent a nice email following up on that (I noted it had been like three or four months and prayed it didn't seem pushy) and the next day my account was approved. I'd worried that sending such an email might ensure I'd never get a chance to post here, but instead it seemed to work to a tee.

Do the folks in charge of account activation actively look for people who dare to send a message to them, provided it's been a long time and the message is courteous? Or was it just weird timing that I sent that thing when I did?

I waited three years for my activation, and that's with emails being sent to the support address. I think you just got lucky, pal.

I was confused about how the whole account approvals/activation thing worked when I wasn't able to post after registering and I never got a response email to me asking about how long it might take. I felt so alooooone.

3 years?! Daaamn. I was too lucky. I waited 2 days.

does gaf get attacked, e.g ddos? those types of things have become so prevalent now i would have thought that the type of audience gaf attracts, and someone wanting revenge for being banned or unhappy with moderation etc would eventually overlap to cause a problem.

does cloudflare have our backs? how many jiggaflops can we sustain? is e3 basically considered a ddos attack?

I gotta be honest, this thread is pretty badass. Sortof a "behind the scenes at NeoGaf" thing going on here.

With that said, question for the mods currently perusing. What's the toughest part of maintaining control at the Gaf? I imagine a helluva lot of communication between you guys. Weekly status meetings a thing yet? Hehe.

I'm staying on GAF at least until I get tagged. Then, and only then, will the long, long night reach its end and I can consider moving on.

I've been here almost a decade and still no tag, so you may want to get comfortable.

I'm glad I have no tag. I remember RoboPlato got his tag in a hilarious way, when he said something like "Man, I'd hate to get a tag like "I'd be in the dick" or something like that".

And precisely, he got that tag. It's not what you want, but what the mods think you need. Deep stuff.

Has there been a site feature request thread lately? I have a list of suggestions/concerns/demands.

- a reload thread button at the bottom of desktop pages, like on mobile. Or even better an auto reload. Yes I'm that lazy.
- consistent ordering of the sub forums tabs between mobile and desktop, I confuse easily
- reskinning the default blue bar at the top and bottom of the dark theme.
- ability to quickly/temporarily disable avatars... let's call it 'work mode'

That reminds me, what ever happened to the "Who Quoted Me" feature? It was there one day, then disappeared the next. It was actually pretty helpful.

GAF Pro-Tip:

  • Go to Search - Advanced Search
  • Under Keyword(s) enter:
  • Quote = ["Icefire1424"] (Use your own name in place of mine)
  • Show results as Posts under Search Options
  • Click Search Now

The one thing that does irk me is the downtime during big events, such as E3. Naturally, NeoGAF is my 'go to' place to discuss any games or hardware shown but, damn, there's a lot of downtime. What can be done server side to minimise this?

Apparently increased the number of queries members made on the site and was too demanding. So they got rid of it. I guess adding that little barrier to searching for quotes significantly reduces the workload of the sites servers? I am completely dumb when it comes to this stuff so take it for what it's worth.

Is your F5 key broken?

Everybody liked it, we just couldn't find a way to keep it from being too taxing on the servers.

It's been a few years since we were down all the time during E3.
