• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

It's 2016, and I have questions about NeoGAF

Has there been a site feature request thread lately? I have a list of suggestions/concerns/demands.

- a reload thread button at the bottom of desktop pages, like on mobile. Or even better an auto reload. Yes I'm that lazy.
- consistent ordering of the sub forums tabs between mobile and desktop, I confuse easily
- reskinning the default blue bar at the top and bottom of the dark theme.
- ability to quickly/temporarily disable avatars... let's call it 'work mode'

What weird white space?

Maybe you should stop using Netscape!

When it comes to ModBot raffles how do you know if you've lost or won, and also when I click the link to PM ModBot that shows up in the generated raffle text the PMs don't show up in my sent box. Any idea why?

you know you won when it edits the raffle to say you have won and contacts you with the key
you know you lost when someone else wins
i have no idea what link you mean and you haven't said if you're on mobile or desktop

(none of these things have to do with administrative stuff, ModBot's raffle functionality is thoroughly unofficial)

Oh, I wasn't aware it was unofficial.

I'm talking about the link to PM ModBot that's usually on this line:
To enter this giveaway, send a PM to ModBot with any subject line.

The PM doesn't show up in my sent box when I do it via desktop. When I click the link on mobile it just sends me to my inbox where I have to create a new PM and enter ModBot as the recipient manually.

look at the bottom, see if the box is checked

Yes, this is a failing of the mobile site, you can't direct link into a prepopulated PM thing.

Next time I enter a raffle I'll see if that box is ticked, but usually my sent PMs show up in my sent box. Unless I turned that off while tired. Gosh I don't remember (I'm back on mobile again lol).

I probably just have that box unticked. Phew, I thought a glitch might have been goin' on.

Just remember, modbot is watching you.

Anyway, is it possible for gaf to implement quote notification system?
Will it give a huge load to the website?

Most forums other than NeoGAF are also dying a quick and terrible death in the modern age of social media. Unless you include Reddit in the forum category, which happens to also be minimalist in design.

Avatar dimensions have absolutely nothing to do with system performance. It's part of a set of design choices to emphasize post content first and foremost.

We are with you Sire! For Neogaf! To the death!

There's a Chrome extension that does this specifically for NeoGAF (though it doesn't play nice with other extensions for here like SuperIgnore). It also has auto mode.

Has anyone recently looked into the feasibility of a return for the Who Quoted Me button?

I know it was heavy on resources but in recent years GAF has had very little Guru Meditations and the like. I assume the servers have about a gazillion GBs of HBM RAM by now.

I just think a mod should message a person and let them know why they went from member to junior. I have heard some went from member to junior then back to members.... And they don't have any reasonable why.

We switched about six months ago to a system where this is exactly what happens. When someone gets juniored, they should receive a PM from ModBot explaining what junioring entails, a brief explanation for what got them juniored (usually a link to a thread, more details if needed), and when they will be unjuniored, if applicable. Sometimes people have been confused about being juniored, especially if the junioring took some time to be processed and so didn't exactly coincide with what got them juniored, and this should help mitigate that.

If you were juniored before this was implemented and would like to request to be unjuniored, PM me or another mod (or an admin) to make the request. It helps to include information on what got you juniored. If you're not sure, you can check your thread posting history and I think you'll spot it.

Maybe I'm stupid, but the way GAF behaves when clicking on thread titles seems inconsistent.

Most times it'll go to the first post of the first page, but sometimes it'll go to the last page I read. When is clicking on a thread supposed to do the former and when is it supposed to do the latter?

It's convenient to have it land on the last page I was reading. Is this a GAF thing or some browser cache thing?

Click on the title and it goes to the first post. Click on the little neogaf ball just to the left of the title, and it'll go to the first unread post.

Huh, I thought that one being an admin could spam send PMs to more than 10 users at once.
Also, light? Stumpo pls D:

Or whatever.
Turns out you were too reasonable for a tag.

How did you... earn it?
He went fishing.
He got lucky though, you wouldn't want what most catch :P

Is there an application that you gotta fill out to be a mod or do current mods just band together and chose members who are active/ been here for a long time?

Sometimes tags are given randomly.. and sometimes is not what people want.

Be careful with your wishes :p

Mods and their perks...

Well, what do you prefer this one or my personal animated avatar? :D

The one thing that does irk me is the downtime during big events, such as E3. Naturally, NeoGAF is my 'go to' place to discuss any games or hardware shown but, damn, there's a lot of downtime. What can be done server side to minimise this?

This E3 we had only one downtime of around 2 minutes on the triple announcement of Sony.

I try to lower it as much i can, but sometimes is barely imposible.

I think I answered this above but yeah we all sort of spitball names and EviLore either agrees or disagrees or whatever. There's no hard and fast rule who we pick, how often, or how many. Mostly we just look for people we think would be good additions to our team. People who contribute constructively in different threads (especially areas that require a lot of moderation but that the current team doesn't cover very well), who bring an interesting perspective to the table and/or deserve to be spotlighted as posters, who we think would offer good input on tough decisions. I believe about the lowest level of activity we've made a mod has been Gotchaye, who had maybe 2,000 posts at the time. Normally we're looking for people who have been around a few years. There's definitely no requirement to have 100,000 posts and be here since 2004 though. I believe I also said up-thread that I think we'll be picking some more soon, probably in Q1 2016.

E3 GAF the last few years has been outstanding. Nothing near like the massive down times of probably 3+ years ago.

An order pizza feature so I don't have to open a new window or tab while browsing GAF would be great. :-D

See I always thought mods were chosen by like a fight to the death. Whoever lives becomes a new mod.

I sent my 10k to EviLore via paypal and never heard back. I assume I'm just waiting for verification?

Probably someone like Gromph or Timan, given that they don't post very often and mostly deal with the GAF's back end.

Every time i ban they send me a cookie... this year i had 0 cookies.

Will "Marks Forums Read" ever be moved out of the pesky, incorrect, current placement?

Incorrect? I see it in a nice place :)

Is a perk of gaf GOLD, it detect your close pizza dealers and you can order by a nasty interface we developed.

Seeing that this has become a sort of technical questions Gaf thread, I'll repost something here.

Would it be possible to tweak the mobile gaf layout? Specifically the right-facing arrow that takes you to the last page of a thread, in order to make the touch area a bit bigger.
I switched to an iPhone 6s+ lately, from a 5s, and find it very hard to activate that touch area. I don't know if it's because of the 3d-touch screen or whatever, but it seems as if the fact that the arrow is too close to the edge of the screen (and too small) interferes with the taps.
