You're right, it's probably just a feature they haven't put into it yet because they rushed the online. Still, The idea that game launches crashing the store is nothing new in the gaming business, and Nintendo is not the lone offender of this. It sucks, but it's not "Iwata's greatest failing" sucks.
Steam as well during sales. Is not like is the first time launch of a big game crashes an online store/downloads in consoles. Even Xbox and PS4 has crashed, despite "getting the internets".
Kinda reflects the time period Nintendo seems to be stuck in.You know this is like the weirdest time capsule. Didn't know people still did rage face stuff.
Apparently, Paper Mario: Color Splash allowed people who preloaded to have the full game by September (game came out in October). I'm not surprised they shyed away from this system, though I wish it was back. Server stress is nothing new, though, somehow Nintendo is special for getting it wrong? I dunno, maybe I'm looking into it weird.
Steam as well during sales.
Ignoring the voice chat mess for a minute, the OP is being a little ridiculous, have a coffee and try again a bit later
Thanks. This workedBy the way, you can also purchase it via the Nintendo website here: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/splatoon-2-switch

I can't recall any stores crashing due to too many people buying a game this generation.
So? Because they fucked up once when implementing it then that means that they should stop it completely because of their deserved worry? I think that we as consumers should probably demand a bit more than that.
And we're not taking about other companies now, so I'm not sure why you keep bringing them up. They rightfully deserve and get flak when they mess up. This is about Nintendo and the current situation.

Nothing border line about it.I do not believe they have the right personnel to run their infrastructure teams. They are border line incompetent.
Do they figure people will buy their games anyway?
This worked great and it's currently downloading to my switch, so cheers for this.By the way, you can also purchase it via the Nintendo website here: http://www.nintendo.com/games/detail/splatoon-2-switch

Is it Nintendo of America or Nintendo of Japan that runs infrastructure including the eShop and online services? I wonder if there's still a major disconnect between them that is the root issue for this mess and all the mess of online services.
or you know, this shit happens when a massive demand occurs (aside from my Steam example, see Amazon Japan dying)Honestly, thinking about it - Nintendo's never really had much reason to amp up their online infrastructure. They don't see themselves as a direct competitor to Sony and Microsoft, instead believing the value of their first party games will be what drives the sales of their systems. Quite frankly, they're right, and I think at least the sentiment that Nintendo systems offer a different experience is generally agreed upon here.
This begs the question - if Nintendo's online infrastructure isn't up to snuff, how many customers do they actually lose? If PSN was this level of crap, many potential buyers might buy an Xbox One instead. But when there's no real equivalent alternative, as you could argue the case is with the Switch, do the customers still turn away? Or do they just deal with it in order to get the software that attracted them to the system in the first place? Not that this justifies the situation, but it's interesting to think about.
Oh, and about how Nintendo used to have pre-loading - I don't think they've done that since the Color Splash incident where it was playable early. I know BotW didn't have it, have any 3DS games had it since?
There's a reason everyone's talking about preloading, you know... I'm not saying it still wouldn't have crashed, but it could've allowed you to avoid it if you desired. I know how server stress works.or you know, this shit happens when a massive demand occurs (aside from my Steam example, see Amazon Japan dying)
My commentary was on this as well, yes. Intentionally, based on the more general thread title.feels like you folks are correlating the shitty mic chat to something irrelevant like this network deal
That doesn't at all answer my question. Also 3ds could preload too, Switch just doesn't have it yet.
literally going backwards when it comes to pre-loading... this fucking company.
Not only did Nintendo amaze the gaming community with an incredibly elegant voice chat solution this week but they have also found another way to remind us they can't provide basic online functionality.
The Nintendo eshop has crashed and people are unable to download Splatoon 2 at release. Wouldn't be a problem if preload on the Switch was a thing, right? lol sure thing buddy.
Does Nintendo just not care about providing a functional online ecosystem for its fans? Do they figure people will buy their games anyway? There is no way that Nintendo management can think what we have right now is suitable so I am struggling to figure out why don't have something that at least reaches parity with Xbox Live when it was released in 2002.
It's been 15 years since MS showed us what a proper online infrastructure should be on a console. 15 years. 15. 1 5
i guess valve cant do it either since their servers always crash during steam sales
Steam as well during sales.
Is this the usual gaf overreaction thread because according to the posters here Steam is behind the times.
Wait, for real? People never seen shit like Steam going down due to sales?
Nintendo can do basic online. It had basic online on Switch before this app.
Online services crashing due to load isn't Nintendo being stupid. It happens to everyone when a massive thing comes out. It has happened on Playstation and Xbox servers many times.
Next question.
The point is preload is a thing that exists. You can't preload steam sales games lol.Steam as well during sales.

I started the Splatoon 2 download an hour ago. Currently at 0%!
The massive traffic of Splatoon 2 launch...ok. Given the usual digital to phsyical sales ratio on Nintendo games, and the fact that there aren't even that many people with a Switch to even download this thing, their servers shouldn't be breaking down.
You obviously get preferential treatment a mere switch peasant can only dream of.How odd.
I started it an hour ago.
It finished 40 minutes ago
So even the digital version is soldout?
