It's been 3 full years since Retro Studios' last game, what is going on over there?

There's never been a DK game better than any Metroid developed pre-Other M.

Honestly, I think they are in trouble. I'm gonna guess that they have been working on multiple projects but they have all been cancelled for whatever reason. Can you think of any other reason as to why we haven't heard from them in such a long time?

Honestly the reasonable person would assume there simply working on a Switch game, but I forget where we are hence this explanation lol. You can't think of any reason? Really??

DKTF is not tragic, man. What are you talking about??

I dont know what the hell they could possibly be doing? Cant you check their twitter? Anyways, wait for E3

I have a feeling that Nintendo is putting their game in a 2018 release. Mario Odyssey, a Smash port, and Pokemon Stars would be a big holiday already.

Besides, Retro takes around 3 years to make direct sequels. If this is an all new game design and not just DKCR3/Prime 4 then I expect them to take even longer.

Also for that "tragic" comment, it sure is funny that Tropical Freeze turned out to be GAF's most beloved Wii U platformer. >:)

so sad to me that trop freeze, arguably one of the greatest platformers ever made, continually gets shafted by people overlooking it because it's donkey Kong. I'd take a sequel in a heartbeat, but it looks like retro is doing a new IP. Good on them

I feel like that's the general consensus

This is pretty important!

He said the studio has enjoyed working with Metroid, Mario Kart, and Donkey Kong, and they'd "love to come back to them sometime."

Producer Kensuke Tanabe confirmed that Retro is at work on a new game, and Kelbaugh added that it's been in development for a few months since Tropical Freeze was finished. Neither of them were willing to elaborate on what the project is, however.

From this quote is makes it sound like they're not making Metroid or DK. I firmly believe they're working on a brand new IP or another old IP from Nintendo and bringing it back. It probably started on Wii U and then had to change over to Switch. They clearly started the game in late 2013. This fall would put them around 4 years development time.

It's really hard to speculate. Just because you haven't seen anything in 3 years doesn't really mean anything. Sometimes a studio will work on a project for 2 years and then the project will get shelved, or perhaps they've been working on a game for 3 years, impossible to say unless you're someone in the know.

I'm cool with them doing Metroid, but I don't want it to be another Prime. It can even be first person, I just don't want it to have the Prime aesthetic and feel. I want something more in line with Zero Mission's art style, but in 3D. BOTW pulled off the cartoon-ish 3D look amazingly, let's see Metroid do its own version of that.

Whatever it is, I hope they reveal it at E3.

They better be cooking some jaw-dropping, eye-popping, head-turning and body-shocking kinda game.

But watch it be Prime 4 which could easily be done in 2 years

I don't really think that's a fair estimate. The combined work hours required to make a AAA game in the modern generation is astronomical. It would also likely require a not-insignificant engine refactor from what they currently have.

On top of that, Retro has never seemed to be an especially large development team. 2 years would be an exceptionally sketchy development period even with a structure like Ubisoft sometimes employs that may throw hundreds upon hundreds of people from various teams at a major project.

Almost no AAA developer would be able to accomplish a project the scale of a current gen Metroid Prime in 2 years.

I'm all for expecting impressive thingo out of their current project, but I think we have to step back and not expect such a game within a nigh-impossible schedule.

Waiting on that E3 drop in 2 months. Retro gonna come up and save video games.

Metroid Prime 4, DKC: Banana Bonanza, Cooking Mama Prime: Ribs

I'd like to see them do one of 3 things.

Make a new IP.

Make a sequel to a couple of Nintendo's more western/older-skewing IPs (Disaster: Day of Crisis, Geist, Eternal Darkness, Zangeki no Reginleiv, etc.).

Revive/modernize one of Nintendo's really old IPs from the NES/SNES days (Murasame, Startropics, Mach Rider, Gumshoe, Hogan's Alley, Urban Champion, Duck Hunt, etc.).

I'll take a new Metroid or Donkey Kong or something else, but I really want them to be working on one of the above.

Setting aside that "tragic" bait...

There are many logical reasons we haven't seen their new game yet. Including the fact it was probably originally in development for Wii U and had to move to Switch as of last year.

Then on top of that, there are many types of games that take several years to put together. Now imagine that they were finally told or encouraged to forge ahead and make a new IP. You are NOT announcing a new IP until you are truly ready to show that bad boy off.

I think there is a chance we see it at this years E3, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is savved and made a big deal out of at E3 2018. Because whatever they are making, I am guessing 2018 is the target for release.Looking at things logically, it hasn't even been 4 whole years since TF came out...

Do folks think game dev time just turns around every couple of years? Even the new AC game - while a year was skipped in releasing an AC game, reality is that game already had 2 or 3 years of dev before the year skip. Even call of duty games that have yearly releases take 3 years to churn out with rotating dev teams.

What we can be sure of is it's likely not a 2D styled sidescrolling platformer. It's probably in the full 3D realm with a third or first person perspective, and those games take awhile. Nintendo typically doesn't do the sony thing (I said typically) where they announce a game 2 or 3 years out from releasing.
