• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

It's just me or are Youtubers getting boring?

TBFP are still alright, definitely the only traditional "LP" channel I still follow. Mostly I'm into longform analysis videos now.

Noah Caldwell Gervais, SuperbunnyHop, Joseph Anderson, Matthewmattowsis, HyperBitHero, Core-A Gaming, Chris Franklin (Errant Signal), MrBTounge (whenever he uploads), and recently I discovered Stop Skeletons From Fighting. There's still plenty good stuff out there.
Give Plague of Gripes' first Dark Souls LP if you like longform analysis. That pretty much sums it up in its entirety.

SSFF is fantastic and I would highly suggest people check them out. Its well worth sitting down and dedicating some time to.

As for the why waste time with this stuff question... If you have to ask that its probably not the sort of thing you SHOULD be spending time watching. These channels all have some sort of appeal to someone. Personally, I watch them for the entertainment value (specifically comedy or analysis of things I'm interested in)... If you're legit just watching for the sake of seeing the game, check out the no-commentary long plays instead.

"Hey guys, DeathstrokePenguinD00M here with 20 helpful tips on how to be a better Roadhog player!"

*Spends 159 minutes talking about how jews control the media, all of the middle east must be nuked, and women not wanting to fuck is a sign of the oncoming white genocide*

Oh, I love Plague's Dark Souls LP, and I need to check out his new run soon. I didn't include him because he's primarily an art channel, but he definitely puts out some good stuff (even if you don't agree with all his opinions).

What kills Youtube personalities for me is the drama. It's worse because Youtube is basically unmoderated, so it's countless videos of people attacking and counter attacking and reacting to attacks and whatnot.

I only watch the Best Friends at this point. I only really have time to watch their LA Noire playthrough which has been amazing so far. I will admit that losing Liam hit pretty hard and I think that they're and fans are really missing him being around.

Lol

Only really watched YouTube with my ex. Streamers are way more my vice. Much more fun and have actually gotten me to want to try new games. I mean, I really only watch two, but still. It's what I usually have on nowadays.

They were never interesting.

Seriously, I never got the appeal. I spend my time actually playing the games instead of watching someone else play.

Same here man. I never really got the appeal of watching someone else play a game. I've seen short clips posted here on gaf, but they were usually videos of people with fake reactions.

I've honestly never seen a gaming youtuber I genuinely like. They've either been merely adequate or totally obnoxious.

TBFP saved me from buying Tekken 7 for the story mode. Also I could listen to Pat and Woolie for hours...and have!

I do agree that I may be part of the odd (majority?) group.

Lmao wat. You may be in the wrong corners of Youtube friend.

But the stuff mentioned in the OP was never NOT boring? Those types of channels have always been extremely mediocre.

The good stuff is still good (Matthewmatosis, Kim Justice, that type of thing).

What kills Youtube personalities for me is the drama.

The personalities themselves is what kills them, really. That they focus on their personas at all even if for a split second is what detracts from the format.

I know there's a huge audience for that type of thing in our ever increasingly alienated world, but it's completely ridiculous. The work needs to speak for itself, honestly.

Funhaus got even better when they added Elyse, but then they also took a huge hit when Joel and Spoole left. They also had lots of series where they played through shitty games from start to finish when they were Inside Gaming, but it seems like they've mostly stopped that.

This. I do enjoy informative channels such as My Life in Gaming, Digital Foundry, Gaming Historian and Mark Brown's.

The only big YouTuber I watched for a long time that didn't significantly change is Chris Smoove. I don't even play 2K anymore but I still watch him because he's just as entertaining as he was the first time I watched him years ago. He hasn't changed in any significant way and I really respect him for it.

Let's Plays are super tired in general to me. I can't remember the last time I watched one for more than a few episodes.

Yep. I've never cared about any other gaming YT channels besides The Super Best Friends. Been watching their stuff every day since the MK9 vid that shot them to stardom. The amount of awesome content they have entertained me with over the years is staggering. I miss Liam, but I love the chemistry between all of them. It will be a sad day in my life if they ever shut up shop.

Yes, for the most part. One thing is for certain, though, I will never get bored of AVGN. I will always fire up his content and be entertained. Yes, even if his new stuff is not as good, his content is at least consistent enough for me to enjoy.

Beside that they are kinda boring many of them don't follow any gaming news and know very little about games they didn't play. Number of stupid things they say in podcasts is astonishing.

first post nails it. i never understood the pleasure in watching other people do the whole walkthrough.

for competitive or multiplayer games, i can understand that people want to see how pros or better players play them, but watching someone play a whole single player campaign is a huge waste of time imo.

Anything can be a waste of time.

The most popular type of videos from the past few several years that seem to be spawned from PDP's are definitely boring. Just nothing new at all except more yelling and focus on the person making the vid instead of being interesting. Thankfully there's a fuckton of videos out there and plenty of good stuff.

A lot of my favorite gaming YouTubers either slowed down their output, outed themselves as terrible people, or both, and I never really put in the effort to get into other peoples' stuff more.

I disagree with that as it can be helpful to watch others play games so you can learn certain things from them, plus commentary from them as well can be good.

even Classic Game Room doesn't feel joyous these days

i pretty much only check for Game Sack, as far a gaming YT stuff goes, tend to assume most others are less knowledgeable/possibly white supremacists/etc

Time to look for better Youtube subs OP, lots of good recommendations in this thread already.

If a video game audience youtube channel makes a joke you would have heard on Newgrounds then you know to unsub immediately before they sap any more IQ points from you.

While I mostly just watch skilled players doing things I wouldn't have done, I believe people watch for the community, it's like back in the old days when people would gather at their friend's house and watch each other play while having a good time and all that.

Otherwise, it could be for informative reasons, such as to determine whether a game is worth a purchase. Or may be they just don't have the time to play all the games, but want to experience those games that they won't be playing. Or, as one of my friends said, he likes to listen to YouTubers(or Podcast) talk as they play, the emotions in their voice give him inspiration to draw or something.

It's cool though, different float for different folk.

As for OP, may be you're getting old. I'm certainly watching less gaming videos these days. However, it could also be that what with recent Youtube changes, I heard some creators are going quantity over quality to keep their viewerships.

Probably just the small number you have seen and thus assume the whole of Youtube is "boring".Your the old man yelling at clouds saying there is no good music these days or comic books.

Good points

y'know, I wonder where these millions upon millions of youtube subscribers of all these different people actually are because the predominant reaction is that 'watching people play games is fucking stupid' whenever the subject is mentioned. and yet...millions, and millions....

There's a big generational difference. Yes, most of the older people who still discuss games on forums think it's fucking stupid. Most younger people who probably don't even know what a forum is are the ones who don't and are subscribing.

Yeah I never understood the appeal.

I always got the feeling it was just people who were too lazy to get real jobs.

We're still doing the "not a real job" thing huh.

Same. Wouldn't spend time watching other people eat, either.

Very reductionist way to look at it. It's not that hard a concep to grasp I think. You ever enjoy watching a movie commentary? Whether it be from the director, or some comedic personalities like MST3K? Some enjoy the same thing with games. And some people watch them after they've played/beaten the game so they can get the reactions or thoughts on it from a person who they find entertaining to watch.

ITT: People feel their irrational hate of YouTubers is justified.

There are thousands of channels out there, so there is always someone you'll love.

All hail our lord and savior Egghead (Northernlion)

I can't say I consume any youtuber gaming content, all my gaming content on youtube is from people who are just distributing stuff there (like giantbomb for instance).

I tend to not pay attention to gaming influencers.

Outside gaming though I'd say I'm still entertained/amused by youtubers.

I guess a few have been entertaining, but overall they are way too self-absorbed and long for my tastes. (Ie I have no interest in hearing anyone speak about anthinf for more than 20 minutes maybe 30 and that's on important sheet, let alone video games). Honestly, it actually bothers me how long some of these sessions are.
