It's just me or are Youtubers getting boring?

Maybe it's because I've never watched the kind of Youtubers this thread's about, but I'm pretty happy with the ones I follow. For let's plays I only watch quill18 and ProJared Plays, and they're consistently good. Other than that, Extra Credits, GMTK, Super Bunnyhop, GameXplain, Arlo and the like are all awesome at what they do.

Literally the only gaming YouTuber I like is Arlo. The rest of them all seem to be cut from that same untalented, uncharismatic cloth.

YouTube reminds me of the android app store...

You have to cut through soooooo much crap to get to the good stuff.

Also, this trend is helping to breed the laziest generation of young adults I've ever seen.

Most youtubers will always be successful leeches in this millennial society of social media and the culture of oversharing everything.

I will never understand the hype behind the cult following of fake personas.

This guy is one of the worst offenders. Every thumbnail has his dumbass face with his mouth gaping wide open like he's seen some amazing shit.

His stream is even worse where he has bells and whistles going off every 3 seconds for donations and subs. He's like the master of fake "hype d00d".

I just love the fact that you didn't realize you were speaking directly to the guy. I have to wonder how much softer your post would have been if you'd known beforehand. "His dumbass face with his mouth gaping wide" lol

To be clear: I don't like reaction thumbnails either, BUT... I watched a LinusTechTips video a while ago where Linus addressed the move towards reaction thumbnails - a move their fanbase has been critical of. In it, he essentially explained that, even if you may find them dumb-looking, the fact is that they actually work. They do attract people. Pretty much like a book cover. So, as long as the content of the videos is still good, I don't mind them as much as I used to. I want the channels and people I like to succeed.

Max Dood, I don't know if you used to have more tame thumbnails, but if so, did you notice a positive effect on your viewership once you switched to 'flashier' thumbnails?

Keep doing what you're doing though. I don't watch your vids all the time, but I'm still subscribed, and I love your genuine passion.

They were never interesting.

Seriously, I never got the appeal. I spend my time actually playing the games instead of watching someone else play.

You probably spend a huge amount of time reading people talking about games right here. So it's that or watching someone play it and talk about it and make jokes. I don't see much of a difference.

I've never been a big Youtube guy and particularly not a fan of "Let's Play" type channels, but the few times I have watched them for games I knew I'd never play but was interested in seeing (Until Dawn, for example) I really liked TheRadBrad's channel. Doesn't have a ridiculous "in your face" personality and his capture quality was really good before most Youtubers caught up.

I also played a bunch of Destiny with him (friend of a friend I did Trials 'carries' with) and he's basically the exact same guy when not making videos.

I still enjoy Angry Joe's reviews, and there's a newer channel called "Downward Thrust" that has quality gaming content that's streamlined and to the point. Not a fan of some channels with their 40+ minute videos.

Never ever got the appeal of watching someone attempt to be funny while playing a game to entertain their viewers. It's happening a lot on Friday the 13th on PC right now. In almost every game you have someone with their account name as their Twitch or YouTube name and you can tell because they just act obnoxious. Yelling and screaming, using voice changers and just ruining the entire vibe of the game to be funny. They receive a mute from me automatically. I can't stand it.

Typically I tune in for Switchforce, Spawn-Wave, Pat the NES Punk, Angry Joe, RGT85, MetalJesusrocks, and a few others. I love the CGR guy too, had/has a great voice for doing this kind of thing and always enjoyed his enthusiasm. A few others I tune into occasionally, otherwise I was never one to sit there and watch others play games.

It's about who you watch. Some of the old types don't seem as entertaining - either because they simply aren't, they are getting a bit bored with their content, or they view it so much like a job they only still do it for the $, rather than the passion.

Not that making $$ doing it is really a problem. But sometimes it takes away from stuff they would like to do.

But there are plenty of other YTers that are fine, and new ones cropping up all the time. The beauty of the platform is that if you get bored with your usual types, there are always fresh faces and personalities out there. I run my own sem-popular channel myself for Nintendo stuff and I still stumble across new channels and personalities I like. Spawn Wave and Switch Force are two channels I discovered this year that I really like (and I later learned Switch Force spun off from another much larger channel I had never heard of).

It's so weird. I can't recall any other period in human history that fostered this bizarre culture of people taking an interest in content creators; choosing to engage with them regularly, and, worst of all, sometimes paying them to do what they do.

Did you know two out of the current three members of the Super Best Friends crew recently upgraded their living spaces? Matt cut a deal with the mafia and now has access to a wife, along with not one, but two cats. This was like within the last five years. Woolie just moved into to a beautiful new home, and his YouTube cronies were able to secretly fill the place with Funko Pops, because they know he loves them so, so much and thinks they're good and clever. I even heard that Pat might have bought a new foil blanket to wear while he hides in his apartment and plays Monster Hunter.

Bunch of slackers leeching warm milk right from the teats of the ignorant Millennial generation.

I've lost interest in YouTube apart from watching the latest Colbert, Oliver, Meyers or Bee.
It all the same recycled content in the end. I actually liked seeing people play obscure or old games, but that's been tapped out for a while.

It's also how sanitized youtube has become, production and content wise. Their videos all look the same, and have the same message. Probably due to Google putting the kibosh on the more unrefined, wild, (and even racist) side of YouTube. There is also a demographics shift with young teens being the majority of viewers and the Mighty Youtube Algorithm is accommodating for that.

I would argue that the Yakuzi 0 LP that TBF did is great and you might want to look into it if you haven't already.

Or you could just take a break from LPers in general for a while and come back and see if you feel the same way.

Ok guys, let's go for 100,000 views, last month we blew past the 70,000 mark and I know we can do it this week.
And as always, thanks for watching.

People feel being impolite is bad. But I fail to see a lot of politeness as anything.

Doing youtube myself for years. Its wierd and has changed drastically. I mostly stick to a few channels and also tend to support and watchs other gaffers. I've personally done over 1000 videos since 2009 and everything from live action, reviews, and random stuff.

I never followed many to begin with, but I still watch TBFP as background noise while writing notes for exams. Content creators like Matthewmatosis, Superbunnyhop, and Jim still get regular views from me, and Max for fighting game stuff. Other than that, RLM and CinemaSins are about the only things I check out youtube for.

i wouldn't call some high ranking youtubers lazy...

From what I posted in the Doomfist thread:
zgoUVu7.jpg

The repetitive saturated content gets really tiresome. You click on one goddamn game related video and you're doomed with suggested videos and channels, all of which contain vapid content and screaming thumbnails.

Or maybe they were - and level with me here - never entertaining in the first place? GASP.

Seriously, the sooner this shit dies in favor of content that requires actual effort to produce, the better.

I don't watch too many of their LPs but I like Best Friends Play for their fighting game videos, other than that I don't watch too many Lets Plays in general. Its too big of a time commitment, especially when I'm already way too behind in playing games or watching TV shows. I don't have anything against them though. I like Game Sack because they usually cover a bunch of older games in just 30 mins. Or Classic Game Room or Jeremy Parish's channel where they cover one game in about 10.

I pretty much go in phases with anything I watch on youtube, that's probably how I keep from getting bored or losing interest for good. I've gone months not watching anything from the last two channels I mentioned but soon I'll probably get back to them and catch up on what I missed.

I'm in the same boat. I've tried LP's, I've tried reviews but none of them were either fulfilling or successful. My recent work has been both, which is great!

Could you link your channel, I'd be interested to see what you've got!

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0SyhPy7VsMQCIYDszFaplQ

I make videos on a channel called Arcadea with a few friends of mine. I just joined them about a month ago and I only have one video up for now (Eiji Aonuma: Before Zelda) but I'll have more going up very very soon! Would love to see what you've got as well if you wouldn't mind linking your content!

Many of the youtubers I frequent are still good, however for some there is a definite drop in quality as time goes on. Personally, I blame Patreon.

Patreon is a great thing for Youtubers and streamers to get paid for their work outside of nebulous advertising dollars. However, for many streamers I've enjoyed in the past, when they went from hobby they enjoyed doing to potential job/career things started to suffer. Some people can keep up with it, but with patreon money there becomes an expectation of a set schedule and continued dispersion of content rather than doing a video when it felt right to that person.

Again, some people can keep up with it and that seems to be where some channels flourish (Jim Sterling doing a video a week plus intermittent content is a good example), but others are forcing it to please their patreon donations when really they don't have the capacity to keep being interesting.

Come on, it's very different. I don't agree with him at all, I can see many reasons to watch someone playing a videogame, but it's also not the same as discussing videogames. If you start posting a different reaction to every single second of a game you're playing, I'll find your posts worthless and obnoxious. Discussing a game (or parts of it) as a whole while being able to take time to formulate your post is absolutely not the same as just spitting the first thing that comes to your head in every single moment.

I think you just need to watch other channels. I used to love Two Best Friends Play and Game Grumps but I feel I've outgrown them. It's a weird mixture of them having remained the same without changing much or their content just become diluted.

I love Mega64, Funhaus (formerly Inside Gaming), Red Letter Media, Video Games Awesome, VideoGameDunkey et al. There's lots of great content out there, just gotta look for it.

Vinny (Vinesauce), Suger Great Friend and TBF have been working real well for me so far. SGF in particular has a certain style I can't get anywhere else. His Killer 7 LP has been real strong, well researched and well structured with bonus episodes to help understand the story. He uploads late, so I tend to just sleep to some of it and watch the rest later.

I can understand why TBF might be a bit unpopular right now, but I quite like the LA NOIRE LP. The game didn't leave a massive impression on me when I played it, but I've taken a liking to watching other people appreciate it more than I did. Think the banter is quite decent too actually, despite some dark subject matter. Nice to wake up to it in my timezone.

I've completely lost interest in Two Best Friends at this point. I don't know what it is. Loved 'em for years, then over the past 6-8 months just kinda gradually started to lose interest until I stopped watching them and listening to the podcast completely.
Same exact thing for me, but I began fading from them in 2015 and it's now to the point I don't watch.

And before anyone says I outgrew them; I was 23 when I started watching them and I'm now going on 27, don't give me that.

But Patreon has the option of only charging when content is released, not just montly - if someone with irregular but high-quality content like MrBtongue was using it, I suspect quite a number of people would find it worthwhile to pitch in under that system.

I've been following the Jimquisition since its inception back on Destructoid and I think the need for an episode every single week has been part of my main problem with the show all along. Each week needs to be an easily put together "story" on the latest drama means that no one episode can really begin to make a larger statement than "fuck this company" or "fuck Youtube." That and, if you've ever read my posts on the guy's work, he's often unhelpful or downright harmful to the causes he "advocates" for. To me it gets boring seeing all problems and no solutions.

Exactly. Watching someone else play has always been one of the most boring things imaginable. That anybody finds it entertaining is beyond my comprehension.

I always expected I would be terrified and baffled of the upcoming generation, not baffled and bored by them.
The game is merely a background for the personality.

Compared to 2010-2012, I have been watching less people on YouTube nowadays than I did back then. Way too much saturation and I can't find anyone 'new' enough for me to subscribe to.

I got bored with them a long time ago, same with Twitch streamers. I only follow a few on both services now and only watch their stuff every now and then. Overall it just seems like a massive waste of time.

I find there's just an issue of over saturation. Everyone has started to feel the same.

Which is one of the reasons I pretty much only watch Easy Allies now. At least they feel different and their personalities are strong enough to make some of the more unique, off the beaten path content worth my time.

as with every medium out there...there is tons of great stuff...you just gotta look.. But also know what you like. One man's trash is another's treasure and all that.

But there is a ton of new and well made channels popping up daily.

Yup. But there are still good channels out there. Its just the ratio of good channels have dropped.

Youtube isn't helping either. With dropping ad revenue, increasing copyright and content restrictions, it's probably going to trend downward.

My kids watch YT. They went from watching adults (cupquake, Dantdm etc) play minecraft and variety games, to watching them play Roblox. Kids want to watch Roblox. Adults who play it can barely feign enjoyment. Its so sad to see people play gamea they dont like because they realize their audience is 9.
