ITT we name the ugliest games this gen

I can see this is officially the silly thread of the day so I apologize for threatening you, pattik. For the record, the ugliest Wii games are Skyscrapers, Cruisin', and Petz Dogz in that order.

Art style, I nominate Braid. I'm really excited for its Mac release, and intend to pick it up because the gameplay/polarizing story intrigue me, but it's always struck me as a disturbingly updated Mario as far as looks go. I know the art style is a major complaint that's levied against it sometimes, though, so it seems pretty controversial. It is extremely unique and eye-catching though, so there's that.

Also, Fracture, but that's almost too easy.

Since this has essentially turned into an "indie game" thread, whatever happened to that game that looked like Super Paper Mario except you could rotate the game world 90 degrees to change the platforming or solve in game puzzles?

Well, here are some other bad looking games technically speaking:

Far Cry Vengeance (Wii - Ubisoft Montreal - 2006)

^ Crap, looks like a wood stick is holding the gun.

Target: Terror (Wii - Leviathan Games - 2008)

^ Looks like we have a winner :lol

I've played Saint's Row 2 directly after GTA4.
Saint's Row 2 looked like the ugliest game ever after that.

See, these threads work so much better when you just go after bad technical graphics. Resist your inner douchebag/fanboy and join in the merry mocking of mediocre to terrible graphics

Do PC games count?

Mount and Blade.

But yeah, to the people in this thread posting the absolute worst screenshots of otherwise good looking games Fuck you. Super Mario Galaxy didn't look like a turd on my TV.

I'd like to see that. Low-res texture aside, the characters look great.

Either you haven't played MGS4 or you missed the obvious reference.

I see what Anobyl did there, and I give it a *thumbs up*

Fail. I love the style of that game. Played horribly, but thats not what this thread is about.

Ya especially that screenshot looks really cool. Nintex's however, does not...

But I think Fallout 3 is one hideous looking game. It's probably why I STILL havent beaten it despite owning it since it came out. I had more fun playing Oblivion even though there was some annoying design issues.

Are we talking hardware/graphics wise or art-style wise?

I hope it's art style. I don't see how anyone can get excited over HD textures when the world that's in HD is still motherfuglyashell, art-wise. Just because the bland desert or alien planet is omgodHD, it will never, ever change the fact that it is still bland...or derivative of superior work.
Zing!

Fallout 3 has its moments (IMO that Pitt screenshot is great) but even with a dated engine I could never call it one of the ugliest next-gen games; it's average. Why hasn't anyone nominated The Orange Box or L4D? That engine's 5 years old! (j/k)

I'm not sure how this connects to sonyfans?
Didn't you hear? If your avatar is a Sony exclusive then you're automatically speaking for everyone who owns a PS3.

So now games are knocked for the setting in which they take place? I think if someone can make a desert look good, it's a bigger accomplishment then someone making a jungle/temple look good.

This threads lame. If it's art we're talking about, its purely opinion based. At least with technical achievements, you can place each game next to each other and draw some sort of conclusion that's based off of some facts.

I just have to restate Oblivion as one of the ugliest games I've played this gen. For all like 2 good sweeping vistas of the game world, the actual game is full of speedtree prebaked trees that look alike, horrendously ugly character models for every NPC, and some of the least inspired textures on weapons/armor ever. It's funny because technically it's pretty competent (though how couldn't it be when Bethesda is so lazy and talentless that they let middleware do all the work for them?) but artistically every character model is hideous, and some world objects look so bad it makes the landscapes suffer.

I mean, granted, it's not as ugly as Target Terror (which is just a shitty port of some Sega CD era FMV-based light gun game) or that Cruis'n Wii game, but Oblivion is astonishingly ugly when it comes to art. It's like the art took a massive downgrade from Morrowind while the tech got a big upgrade.

I was referring to those who champion HD graphics itself as the epitome of art. There's only so much graphics can do. Before you know it we'll be playing games with graphics that look a little too real for its own good, like right now.... Then what will these graphics fanboys do? The limit will be reached and their will be no more bigger and better looks to look forward to. Will that portion of fanboy wars end? Hmm.
