iTunes slowed your startup? did you consider just disabling the iTunes Task/QT startup application in msconfig? it doesn't affect your ability to use iTunes or sync iDevices.
Seems like folks are abandoning software without making sure their problems really couldn't be resolved via knowledge. In some cases, anyway.

It runs ok on all my machines, but I find the iPod/iPhone management very unintuitive when connected to iTunes on different machines. I've wiped the music on my phone/ipod multiple times while trying to change various settings.
lol at the hyperbole in this thread (concerning OSX, at least), My iMac has turn to shit lately but the one program that has yet to succumb to nightmarish slowdown is iTunes. Smooth as butter. And on my Macbook? Well, everything runs divinely there, and iTunes is no exception.

Pretty small stuff aside from iTunes (which doesn't boot at startup unless you set it that way for whatever reason). Then again, that's just idle usage and I don't know how they hit the affect system performance when those are actually in use. But I do know that by simply going to Start-->Run-->msconfig-->Startup you can untick all the iTunes stuff and never have to worry about it affect bootup if it is giving people trouble.
For comparison's sake, Zune on my i7 desktop is currently playing back a song and using 146,400K of memory and about 3%-15% of CPU. No problems for me either way, but again...not quite as efficient.

iTunes is pretty great. I recently got my Dad up and running with iTunes/iPod/AppleTV on his W7 machine for the first time. Took 2 1/2 days to rip his music collection. Now, it's running and syncing perfectly.
I'm impressed, because the last time I had actually dug deep into using iTunes on a Windows machine was a few years ago in Vista and it absolutely sucked compared to OS X.
Now, I think iTunes on W7 is quite good. It's still better on OS X, and since OS X iTunes will always have the AppleScript advantage for power users, it always will be, but it's no slouch on W7.
I think Apple realizes the challenge ahead regarding bloat and iTunes. Notice they didn't shoehorn the Mac App Store into iTunes, even though they could have done so really easily? I think that says something...

I run iTunes on my iMac, use it to sync songs, but buy songs through Amazon and have them go into a folder on my external HDD which is shared across a network to my Linux box which runs Songbird and can read the iTunes Media Library.xml and get all my ratings and everything else. Win!!

You can only sync it to one computer at a time. Wipe will happen the first sync too. If you try it on computer #2, you must erase everything and resync again. And, if you go back to computer #1, same thing will happen. Guess, it's their shitty way to stop people from moving stuff to other computers.f0rk said:

Agreed with all the Zune comments in here, the software is so much faster than iTunes, it looks much nicer, and I overall like the organization and aesthetics of the Zune a lot more than that of an iPod. A lot of the people will badmouth Zunes without using them just because they see iPods as superior for whatever reason. The Zune Pass is cool too, even if I've only used the demo, and I haven't had the software crash or slow once. The stores for either don't really matter to me, I'm an Amazon MP3 person whenever I buy digital.

I know no one in the world uses an iPod nano anymore except me, but if for some reason you do, for God's sake don't get the new touch nano. The touch screen goes to sleep after a few seconds and when it does you cannot pause/play or skip without first pressing a physical button to wake the screen up again. That nano touch was designed by psychopaths.

iTunes has never really given me any trouble, but these days I mostly just use it for podcasts and I have a fairly modest music library. I've looked into switching to something else several times, but I haven't found anything that manages audio and video podcasts quite as well.
I might have to check out Zune... haven't tried that yet, but I've never been too sold on the UI from what I've seen of it.

Click on the podcast -> Click 'Settings...' -> Uncheck 'Use Default Settings' -> For 'When new episodes are available' choose 'Download All'ToxicAdam said:

iTunes for PC has been shitty forever, and while some of the new features they added have been useful, Apple has been content for a large majority of iPod users to have a slow and unwieldy program for years now. It doesn't do them any good to possible PC-to-Mac converts who think that Apple can't write good programs because of their iTunes experience.
I've given up using my iPhone for music and just sync for apps now because the music management is such a pain. It is quite slow and unnecessarily bloated at times. BTW I have always used manual sync in iTunes but it can still be a lengthy process.
I had the relatively unique experience of using a Zune a couple years back when the software was at 2.4ish, left for awhile after the Zune2gen broke, and came back to where it is at now with a Zune HD. I've had experience with the software then and it's pretty remarkable how much it has improved since then. The interface is really clean and flexible, and it is much easier to get the things done that you want. Renaming multiple tracks & getting album art is literally over 10x quicker to do in Zune than it is in iTunes. Also when trying to remove tracks or duplicates, the Zune does it automatically while it takes a few extra steps in iTunes.
Plus, when you have Zune set up to get info and pics for all of your artists, it creates a more visually appealing and functional music player than the iPhone of iTouch can match.
