I've never played Valkyrie Profile :(

So uh, yeah, I feel left out now (especially with the sequel stuff announced). But I don't know how I could get it, I looked at ebay and its way out of my budget range for a game over $150 in some places.

So, what was this game about anyway?

I have yet to play this game as well. It's too bad I don't have many gamer friends that would probably have the game.

IN ODIN'S NAME I PRAY, GET OUT

Enjoy the game!

I'm damn proud of being one of the few that bought this game when it was released on PS1, my decision came from the fact that I played the JPN version before buying it.

I remember my cousin badmouthing the game because of the box-art. when he saw me playing it :o~~~~~~~~

You're not missing out on much. It wasn't that great of a game. I think expectations were too high. Nice graphics, but gameplay was rather meh. I'd definitely balk at a $100 price tag. Not worth it.

And this is why Square Enix is mercifully bestowing upon us a PSP port. :D

And since nobody else will answer your question, the short answer is that the destruction of the world (i.e. Ragnarok) is imminent, so you, as Valkyrie, have to collect the souls of the recently departed from Midgard and train them to be mighty Einherjar who will you will periodically send back to Asgard to wage war on behalf of Odin. Pretty badass concept, really. :)

So. Do they completely rape norse mythology and just uses the settings because it's cool (like every other asian rpg inspired by norse myth.) or are they actually doing something that fits perfectly with the actual religion?

Remember all those times that a game needed just a bit more sales to get a reprint, or when you saw a game being discounted because it wasn't selling? You should have bought it then.

It's really not THE BEST GAME EVERR!!!!! (or one that would require spending 4x retail to play... that's just kinda silly), but it's a great RPG on a system that saw a lot of really really good RPGs.

Also, the kind of port that the PSP needs to see more of! More Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden 1&2, Princess Crown, Rockman Dash 2 ports in the US, less MediEvil and Ape Escape. More ports of games that many didn't even get a chance to play, and less ports of games that people didn't want to play in the first place, and then them being made worse because the analog nub is trash.

It's a mixture, Kroole. You're not going to get a mythology lesson from this game, but at the same time it's not like everything is made up either.

Oddly, I didn't care much for the battle system for the first half of the game, and I stopped playing for a few months, even though I liked the rest of the game. When I came back to it, it suddenly clicked, and became one of my favorite games ever.

Apparently it showed up in the EBGames.com morning update... the update is always at 4 am PST so I missed it by a mile... :/

It had neat 2D graphics and a very fun battle system. I borrowed it from a friend years ago, but only got about halfway through it. I might get the PSP version at some point.

It was easily the best RPG on PS1 and probably the best RPG of last generation. Only Grandia, Paper Mario, DQ7 and Pokemon even came close.

I wouldn't say it totally butchers Norse mythology, either. It makes a lot of adjustments, sure, but at the same time there are some things that are extremely faithful to the myths. (i.e. the whole Aesir vs. Vanir war in the coming of Ragnarok, and even your role in the game as a collector of souls / Valkyrie.)

But, again, it isn't a history lesson either.

Ok, thanks for the info. I would've really liked a RPG that actually follows the norse myth. as there is so much that can be done with it.

This puppy is in my backlog, and I will play it soon. I put ~3 or so hours into it before, and really liked what I played. Very unique game.

Still can't believe they're making the new games.

If you're looking for a RPG that follows it totally, then you're never gonna find one. VP is the closest I've see an RPG take Norse Mythology even with the liberties it takes.

It's excellent, and probably my second favorite PSX RPG. Although some parts are definitely more on the frustrating side... having your Dragon Buster weapon break, jumping over
the guardian
, reflecting laser beams off the ice crystals, throwing treasure chests by mistake instead of getting the item inside (you KNOW you've done this!)...
