Lately been getting into the stuff... watched Nodame Cantabile, and then Hana Yori Dango 2 (watched the first one in anime form). Even though the stuff is pretty embarassing to watch, and pretty poorly acted and overblown, it gives a warm fuzzy feeling I quite enjoy.

Question is, what are some other J-Dramas? Anymore based of anime? There's of course GTO; but I've seen it and loved it. I tried to watch densha otoko, but... couldn't. But still, I'm open to giving more j-dramas a shot. Anyone watch this stuff? And what would you recommend for a fledling watcher?

YES

i have not been depressed enough to watch for years (until now, actually!) but the one series i remember watching and even maybe enjoying was beautiful life.

I loved GTO...

And watched both Hana Yori Dango 1 and 2....

Loved those.

Watched most of Proposal Daisakusen, enjoyed that... kinda...

Densha Otoko was good too...

Now watching First Kiss and it's eh...

There are two shows currently airing that I actually find enjoyable. One is based of a comic of the same name, called "Life," and is about a girl who gets horribly bullied, and the other is a Father-Daughter body switch drama with laffs because of the situations they get in. The guy who plays the father is hilarious.

Beautiful Life is great.

Recently, Densha Otoko, Nodame Cantible come hiiiiiiiiighly recommended.

Right now, it's totally stupid and for girls, but Hanazakari to kimitachi he is really a fun watch.

During the fall I was watching Hanayome to papa, which is kind of a meh drama, the male love interest is pretty horrible, but the main girl is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute.

Japanese Dramas are very very formulaic, but thats Japan for you, they do the same thing over and over again, and the difference between the shitty ones and the good ones are all in the details.

Which doesn't come on tonight because of fucking sekai rikujou :(

Edit: I'd like to add that most of the drama you will find won't be world changing, or even very original or high budget or anything near the quality of American hour dramas, but they are entertaining and always have an end (even though they often seem thrown together)

Ikebukuro West Gate Park, My Boss My Hero, Mukodono, Gokusen, Taiyou no uta, Kirakira Kensui, Dragon Zakura and Stand Up......... These are some which stand out in my mind...... Which you haven't mentioned already. Of course it depends on what you are interested in, but, I thought all of these were quite cool. :)

sp0rsk has already stated what I wanted to. Couldn't agree any more.

Also if you enjoyed GTO, you might enjoy Gokusen too. Same type of stories.. but it's a female teacher who is part of a yakuza family.

i will definitely grab a couple of these, but i'm a little disappointed that i don't recognize any names from the cast lists.

i'm so dated. :(

The father-daughter drama? (What's the name...I forget) It didn't seem like the last episode I watched was the ending.

That's why I love the japanese series philosophy; shit ends. You're left with a bright note rather than having the show drag on and on and on until you don't give a damn anymore.

24, I'm looking at you!

I know that's not true for all their shows, nor is the converse true for all american shows... but with american shows; that shit tends to end because of ratings and not anything else.

But I like both approaches, and is probably a key reason of why I enjoy the stuff, even though it's sooo much sillier than american dramas.

I never was really into the hour long dramas.

But I did get dragged into the renzoku dramas that come on after the 22:00 NHK News.

there was Blue Moshikuha Blue, which was about this woman who meets a parallel world version of herself while she is cheating on her rich husband witha lover in Fukuoka.

I really like Karuta Queen, mostly because Tatsuya Yamaguchi is HOT, but also because it's Karuta!

There was also another one that took place in Miyazaki-ken, and it was airing right before I moved there on JET, so I was really into it. I forget what it was called but it had a great theme song that became somewhat of a hit 'hiyaku genki dashite sono egao wo misete' or something like that.

Don't watch terebi anymore, so I don't know any other dramas.

I think it's called Papa to musume no nanokakan.

I'm pretty sure last week was the end. I was surprised too considering it was only the seventh episode, but considering the title it makes sense. I thought the
father and daughter switched back to their normal selves. The end of the episode had the dad getting promoted to manager and Kome happy with her boyfriend.

I've seen quite over the past little while. My favourites are definitely Jyoou no Kyoushitsu (not your typical school drama), Liar Game and Nobuta wo Produce.

I'm currently watching Yama Onna Kabe Onna. Basically, all you need to know is that it stars Itoh Misaki (from Densha Otoko), and it's about her inferiority complex with her small boobs. It's one dimensional but pretty hilarious at times :D

More about the show here

Give Orange Days a look. It's nice coming of age story of 5 college friends, slighty cliched & manipulative like most J-dramas, but definitely one of the best. Plus, it also stars the delightful Shiraishi Miho.

I've seen Hermes in random advertissement and banners for fashion stuff at yesasia. What a classy woman; I want to marry her.

I can really never get into the J dramas...

Although I did watch one regularly with my host mom. It was about sister(girl from Densha otoko) and her brother in med school. It was pretty damn hilarious. She just kept screwing up things for him and for some reason became a hostess before trying to bring back her father's sake business.

Or something.

I loved the first half of Orange Days, but as it went on, it deteriorated horribly.

GTO is still my favorite.

I have only seen GTO, Densha, and Nodame (I am still waiting for the two specials for Nodame, I heard they come out in 2008).

but I kinda wanted to check out Hana Yori Dango because I saw the first 5 minutes of the first episode of Hana Yori Dango 2 and it was hilarious. I still have to check out Gokusen because I did hear the live action was better than the anime, even tho I didnt really like the anime.

A favorite of mine is Kisarazu Cat's Eye. It's older (2001) but was so hilarious. I watched the first episode and was kinda uhhh but then go hooked and couldn't stop watching it.

I have already watched many J-Dramas : Densha Otoko, Nodame Cantabile, Kekkon dekinai Otoko, GTO, Nobuta wo Produce, Remote, Psychometer Eiji, Bengoshi no Kuzu, Kurosagi, Dragon Zakura, Gokusen, Hana Yori Dango, are the one I remember.
I also watched some SP : Meitantei Conan, Prince of Tennis and Maison Ikkoku.
Currently I am watching Tantei Gakuen Q and Akihabara@deep.
As you can see, I appreciate a lot manga and anime based J-Dramas.

Kinda fitting that the show is one dimensional considering Itoh Misaki is so one dimensional.

As most have said, J-dramas tend to be formulaic and recycled. What makes them enjoyable to watch is usually the interaction between characters. However, you'll get a really original and well done one every once and awhile.

Anyway, for comedy I'd recommend Trick and Gokusen. For others, I'd recommend Moto-kare and Ima Ai ni Yukimasu. There's one other I'd recommend but there aren't any subs for it that I know of and the episodes are hard to get.

Not really in the same vein as the others listed but I have been catching up on Fuurin Kazen and liking it alot.
It is a period drama that is not bad at all.

Beautiful Life and Hero are both great in their own ways, and worth checking out.

Others I've enjoyed:

Pride
Orange Days
Kimi wa Petto :lol
Densha Otoko

Trick, it is like X-files if Mulder and Scully couldn't decide who the straight man was.

Oh and Kekkon Dekinai Otoko, very funny and shows why Hiroshi Abe is the man.

That's the onw I was refering to above, isn't it? I've seen a couple of episodes from another series with that Abe fellow in the lead; Stay at home dad. Kind of entertaining too.

Sorry didn't see it, but yeah. Gets real touching toward the end, and you can't but love the god ugly pug.
