J-Dramas

Just a heads up on a couple i just watched.

Around 40, kind of a female version of Kekkon Dekinai Otoko

Home drama, about a group of people dealing with a bus crash that changed all their lives. Kind of sappy but I like it.

Last Friends, about a bunch of broken people and their interaction with each other. This drama surprised me with a few things I never seen in Jdramas. Especially the ending. Has the chick from Attention please in it being very not wacky.

I must be weird, I love the Gokusen anime/manga but didn't care too much to finish the jdrama. :lol Finished up Fukigen Na Gene, really good drama though the ending made me feel a little sad.

Ok, imagine if Groundhog Day was a little more like Sliders in that every time the day starts over something would be slightly different than the last time. That's pretty much how Gokusen feels now.

There's a drama with a Groundhog day+Sliders-esque premise (although the timeframe is 4 years rather than a day as I recall) from 1999. It's awesome and one of my absolute favorites.

So, I am new to J-Dramas. I started off with Beautiful Life, which was pretty good overall, though it did drag at certain parts for me. It was a little heavy though, so went for something lighter...

GTO!!
Almost done with GTO. Loving it! I loved the anime, so I figured I would give the live-action a shot, since I heard great things about it.

Just started Densha Otoko. I just finished the first episode, and I am really enjoying it.
So it's based on a true story huh?

I just went to borders today, and I saw the English version of the novel. "Train Man".
Might give that a read after I am done with the show.

I took down some other titles from this thread, which I will watch after I am done with the above two.

So far my recommendations are Last Friends and Rookies.

Last Friends cause its pretty bold for a j-drama, deals with some pretty mature issues like abusive relationships, sexual identity and stuff.

Rookies cause it's live action MANIME.

My girlfriend has joined one of the larger drama subbing groups and has a choice over something she wants to sub....... Is there any drama airing now or in the past that's worth translating and hasn't already been? lol

Try Kinpachi Sensei, preferably the just finished season 8. At the moment, I think 6-7 are the only two that have ever been translated.

It's worth the effort, such a great series.

it is not a series, just a one shot type thing, but Hoshi Hitotsu no Yoru looked cool and that never got subbed.

Rookies looks awesome, im just waiting for subs. Last Friends doesnt seem like something I would be into. I am not a big fan of more serious j-drama. I might check it out.

Skip Gokusen, watch Rookies.
I think I'll do just that. Gokusen was great the first time, but it really wore thin in the second season and third season is looking to be even moreso.

4 or 5 was on TV in So Cal subtitled like 10 years ago, iirc. I taped it. :)

Whoa, Last Friend is kind of heavy isn't it?
I didn't realise it at first, but the same actress from Nodame Cantabile is in it. Amazing how different she is.

Three of the main characters are from Nodame Cantabile, actually! Eri and Takeru are the awesome Mine/Kiyora couple.

He was in honey and clover.

Sorry to sound generic, but are there any MUST SEE J-Dramas out there? As in, The Wire is a "must-see" American show?

I tried to go to D Addicts, but it's pretty difficult trying to wade through the hundreds of fangirls(or guys) squealing about their favourite 'hot' actor starring in a new drama.

I've seen:

Densha Otoko
Hana Yori Dango
Gal Circle (Don't...don't ask)
LIFE (My favourite Drama so far)

I am finding it kind of cool how many things actually made it into series in japan.
Oddly enough I am currently watching the ringu saishusho in between episodes of Atsuhime and it is not bad at all.

Watch GTO!
I have only seen two J-Dramas so far, but GTO was really good.
If your into the whole heavy drama, then watch Beautiful Life. You should be hooked by the first episode, if it's something that appeals to you.

Does that mean its a poor series?

Depends. I was a big fan of the anime and manga, but I didnt like the drama. I don't know that if you are new to the series in general if you would have the same reaction.

w00t for HYD movie! Can't wait. :D

Also, if you like LIFE, you might also like Last Friends. Seems like a pretty deep/dark series so far as I find LIFE to be.

Why is it every drama that I watch looks like it was recorded off of a three times copied over VHS tape?
Older ones I can understand I guess but Atsuhime is currently airing and the available subbed version that I found is another one of the vhs quality.
Fuurin Kazan was the same way, though at least I found the first few in better quality.

I just need to accelerate my education in the language :D
But yeah raws I think are the way to go as long as I can dig up subs.

Aside from Last Friends, also enjoying the Zettai Kareshi jdrama. :D

My girlfriend is doing quality checks on the Zettai Kareshi subs for her group (and various other things) until she decides on a drama to sub.... She was going to do Food Fight because the only subs we can find switch to random chinese dub in the middle of the first ep, but, no one can find the raw.........

Someone mentioned the Kurosagi movie....... Is it out already? I'm gunna ask her to do that if it is..... I liked the series and would really like to watch the film.

I'm watching Gokusen and Rookies this time around. I'm thinking of checking out Last Friend as well.

I actually like this season of Gokusen much better than the second one so far. I thought the second one was just a copy of the first only with a new class, but this season actually is trying to some new stuff (although sticking with the standard Gokusen style). I'm enjoying it so far.

Rookies is much better, though. I was a huge fan of the original Manga, and I think it's doing a pretty good job of representing the story.

Nice, didn't know there was going to be a hanadan movie. So far i think ill be watching gokusen s3, simply because i liked the first 2.

shas'la said:
are you watching RAW's or subs?

subs. Two out of the four episodes are already subbed. Also, the first episode is like 90 minutes long, so it is basically two episodes already.

Both two numbered episodes I watched were amazing. Episode 3 preview looks like it is going to be crazy. This show really has so much I like about j-drama.

Koshiba said:
Rookies! Really looking forward to seeing that one but figured I'd go ahead and wait for hardsubs.

Hardsubs are out for the first episode.

Rookies... haha. japan really cracks up my western ass. I mean, Come on!

Baseball? These guys playing baseball?

At least judging from all the various baseball anime/drama/movies I watched in the past, Japanese baseball is different than American. Whenever they make comparisons to American baseball in the shows, they always say how American is all about homeruns and scoring runs while Japanese is about teamwork and taking sacrifices or something like that. I don't know the details of it all.
