I don't see why they can't go Fringe style and just bookend a one-off story with overarching story elements at the beginning and end. "OMG the big bad guy from this movie is somehow connected to whatsherface from QoS!"

the Broccoli family is insane and incredibly controlling.

That said, going with pure one-off stories isn't going to hurt the chances of these being good Bond films. If anything, even though I'd like to see Quantum come back too, it'll be a good thing because it'll give more freedom to the screenwriters than having to tie themselves into a continuity.

You don't think they'll stil push a background secret organization behind these one-offs?

I'm just speculating here, but I honeslty believe they are going to distance themselves from QoS. Call me crazy (and call the Broccoli/Wilson combo even crazier), but I honestly believe EON's biggest goal is to make a Bond movie that garners serious award consideration. Look at the people they have been going after in the Craig era (Craig himself included) - Marc Forster, Sam Mendes, Roger Deakins, Paul Haggis, John Logan, Javier Bardem, Mathieu Almaric, etc. I think Barbara Broccoli is almost drunk on the idea and is willing to go to any lengths to make it happen. Casino Royale was a perfect first step down that path for them (and landed Craig a BAFTA nom), but QoS was a huge regression for them in that light. So I fully expect Skyfall isn't going to have anything Quantum related in it. I'd love to be proven wrong though.

I hope they distance themselves from Quantum in many ways, it was a steaming turd of a bond film. Such a shame considering how good CR was.

There's a lot working against a Bond film getting serious awards. It's kind of like comedy actors getting recognized in the Best Actor category, or animated films in the Best Picture category. There's a lot of assholes who just have a very strong bias against certain things being worthy of "serious" consideration, no matter how good they are on their own merits.

In order for the film itself to win awards beyond technical awards like cinematography/editing/sound mixing awards, it'd likely need to take out some Bond staples, like the fairly two-dimensional women who throw themselves at Bond. CR and QoS did a great job with Vesper and Camille (and with Bond's relationship to each), but Strawberry Fields and Dimitrios' wife, while not being particularly campy outside of Agent Fields' name, are still not particularly fleshed-out and are sort of conspicuously two-dimensional.

I'm not sure if I would've liked her in Bond 23. Good riddance.

There is no way that Daniel Craig's WIFE was ever going to be in a Bond movie with him - separation of church and state/business and pleasure and all that. It is kind of hilarious though that she is doing his rival series.

QoS (despite having its fans, me being one of them) was pretty lukewarm in its reception amongst critics and moviegoers, and just barely outgrossed CR (and made less if you account for inflation). So it was pretty much guaranteed at that point that they were going to throw the baby out with the bath water and start fresh for Bond 23. A return to one-off adventures is what I imagine the rest of Craig's tenure will be.

What?

You are telling me there won't be a follow up to that? That's crazy.

Bit of a non-story, but whatever.

Rumours are growing that new British director Sam Mendes is planning to ditch a host of stunts and action scenes from his first Bond film.
Insiders say the new film, expected to be called Skyfall, will be very different in tone as Mendes instead aims for “characterful performances” that will put his creation in the running for Oscar nominations.

One source said: “There are growing rumours Sam Mendes is cutting out the action scenes and making it Oscar-friendly.”
Insiders maintain that “action scenes in India have all been axed” though scenes in Istanbul and Duntrune Castle in Argyll “are still there for the moment”.
A source added: “This could be a disaster in terms of sales at box office.
“Given that this 007 needs to make at least £300million to break even, it may be a very high price to pay for an Oscar nomination.”

I hope it is a cerebral drama with Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem in one room the entire movie.

Yes, a powerful picture.

Two men, different stands on things.

Two hours to talk things through.

Franka Potente playing a Bond girl would be even more hilarious.

I wouldn't mind

I'd take a story like that with a huge grain of salt anyway. Just sounds like somebody's interpretation of everything that has been reported over the last few months. An attempt at getting hits is my guess.

I would love to see a Bond film with more dramatic elements, but I still need my gadgets, over the top chase sequences, and beautiful women who can be swooned into a night of sex with a few choice words and looks. Otherwise they need to drop the "Ian Fleming's James Bond in" moniker and simply call it "Skyfall".

I seem to recall Craig or someone else in the higher ups at MGM saying this film would be a return to the more "classic" Bond with gadgets and even Moneypenny possibly making an appearance.

If true, who called it? Solo called it.

But MI6 isn't even posting it, so its likely some made up crap in order to get hits. And EON would never allow a Bond movie to be made with NO action.

That made me laugh, but that said: i want my Bond movies to have gratuitous amounts of violence, one-liners and gadgets. Speaking of which, i really need to see Johnny English.

That rumour really sounds like something someone made up and expected to be believable based on Sam Mendes' pedigree.

Well CR was pretty character oriented and I enjoyed the movie because of that.

It was. But there were also 3 major action setpieces. I would assume Skyfall will be similar in its structure.

To me, there is a difference between "I want to make the movie less action oriented to focus more on the characters and story" and "I want to cut action scenes to make the movie more Oscar friendly." I hope they know what they're doing.

What you described is your average Roger Moore Bond movie, which is probably as far from "Ian Fleming's Bond" as it gets while still being considered his character.

True. They may also be looking at Dark Knight as a model in how to frame the movie thematically.

Trying to win Oscar nominations with a Bond movie is a fool's endeavour.
They're not stupid enough to try that.
