January 2015 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes February 10th

I'm pretty sure best selling Sony published game in US is Gran Turismo 3. Shipped 7M+ in North America according to Sony financials. Don't think anything comes close.

For comparison Crash Bandicoot 2 & 3 + Gran Tourismo 1 & 2 are slightly 3M+ in US according to that old NPD leak we have.

Yeah GT was definitely not a growth franchise in the USA last gen.

I loved GT3 and GT5 (The Soundtrack was amazing, listen to Pnau - Baby (Breakbot Remix) when you have a chance), but the DS3 was awful. I don't know if GT7 is going to top sales records, at least in the US. It will definitely be a hit in Europe, right? They're more into racing than we are.

Bloodborne will do very well, it wouldn't surprise me if it did better numbers than the souls games from last gen on PS3.

I know 2 people who have either pre-ordered or intend on buying at launch who would never normally play that style of game.

And I know a few 100% PC guys that are planning to get bloodborne and a PS4 strictly for that one game.

Bloodborne seems to have attracted the attention of a much wider audience perhaps due to the "thirst" or simply the beautiful world that From has shown off so far. How can anyone not want the game after watching that cleric beast footage!

Technically Bloodborne is not really a new IP. It's a successor to a well established franchise. A franchise that has a huge fanbase on PS3, 360, and PC. I already know a few non PS4 owners who will be buying the system because of that game. There will be plenty of Demon's and Dark Souls fans who will interested in BB.

Wasn't GT3 very heavily bundled though? That is why it's so much above other GT games.

Well, so far, not great, but not miserable. I have to wonder if it will pick up once more people realize it is even coming out. I talk with a lot of people, who don't realize that it is the first JRPG-ish game releasing on the system here in the US for the new systems, let alone the first Final Fantasy title (spinoff or otherwise) releasing on the new systems. PS4 preorders laugh at the XB1 though. Not even close.

Thanks for the reply and insight.
I'm interested in seeing how big the gap will be this time around. Last generation, even with the 360's sizable lead in the US, Final Fantasy typically sold more on PS3 in a 2:1 ratio.

My pleasure Kagari.

And I know that just me informing my friends that it is coming led to the local stores having 5 PS4 preoders of it, as well as several friends across the US also going to be getting it... But we're all JRPG fiends anyway, currently awaiting localizations (We also have Toukiden Kiwami preordered, and I am debating on a collector's edition or normal edition preorder of Persona 5 once those details are announced).

The percentage of people that are seemingly informed of Japanese games that have the two consoles still skews very heavily in favor of the PS4. I feel like that audience saw the Sony ecosystem as the 'home', so to speak. PS3 and Vita are awash with options for JRPGs, and the PS4 is already showing it is getting that kind of support from the Japanese publishers.

NPD releases their USA report later today.

But what we should all focus on is not USA NPD....but the often-neglected CANADIAN NPD video game report!

Who else is excited about that!? CosmicQueso? Anybody? ;-)

Isnt Canadian NPD always there? but just there were no leaks or information from them.

Different country but does anyone know when NPD will publish the yearly report for Australia? News about it usually comes around this time of year.

Six more hours until the USA NPD report! :-)

Poor Canada! So neglected that people don't even know if NPD releases regular reports there...

Of course, silly. Lots and lots of regular NPD reports from Canada, but nobody cares enough to leak anything...

Yearly report? Last year they released it on 2014-02-12.

But NPD + GfK releases preliminary Australian / New Zealand numbers every Friday

Yeah GT was definitely not a growth franchise in the USA last gen.

Because the franchise was shit last gen. GT5 was a late mess and GT6 came out two years too late.

GT6 will be the worst selling of the franchise by far, it was suicidal to release it during the PS4/XB1 launch. SCEJA need to kick some arse at Polyphony to make sure they don't fuck it up again this generation.

How representative is amazon for the overall canadian gaming market?
According to Amazon, only thing video game related we buy are Ouyas and Amiibos...

Judging by that Canadian Amiibo thread being consistently on the front page, I think we can conclude that Amazon is very representative to our buying habits.

I don't think it is representative. I think we are buying less and shopping around for good deals due to price increase.

I love the Canananadana NPDz. Smell like maple syrup. Taste like hockey.

What a sad avatar. Bring back the astronaut.

Okay. I'm still way angrier about this than I can believe. But you're right. Time to move on.

I would imagine it would be largely similar to the U.S., just a tenth as much sales and more hockey game sales by proportion

It's really hard to get excited about a market that we rarely never get info about.

press release:

NPD: Home textiles grew 2% in 2014

Port Washington, N.Y. – Consumers spent $21.6 billion on home textiles last year, a 2% increase over 2013, according to a new report from NPD Group.

Spending on bath towels/bath sheets showed the strongest growth, up 14% year-over-year. Other areas of strength were bed covers (up 12%) and table linens (up 9%).

Consumers cut their spending on kitchen textiles, according to the report, and bedding ensembles were flat for the year.

“Inspiration, innovation, and simplification influenced consumers and product performance throughout the home in 2014,” said Debra Mednick , executive director and home industry analyst, The NPD Group. “Following a year of aspirational motivation in 2013, which came on the heels of challenging economic times, consumers have adjusted their attitude to a less emotional, more practical one when it comes to equipping and furnishing their homes – looking to products that deliver on a new look or feel, or a new approach to performing everyday tasks.”

The report found consumers spent $20.0 billion on small appliances, up 1%, and $5.5 billion on non-electric housewares, down 1%.

that yoy table linen growth though

You mean "virtually' because technically it is a new IP

Strangest thing to me. Did things get too "heated" in December for spending to jump that much?

Any word on who won?

Edit: Should have read beyond the first line! lol

Honestly, outside of the obvious major infos that will come out of this (in a way or another), I hope we get updates about

- Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on both 3DS and Wii U
- Lego City Undercover on both Wii U and 3DS
- Fire Emblem:Awakening
- Zelda:OOT 3D
- Kingdom Hearts 3D

Not hoping for all of them, but I hope we'll get updates on some of them, since it's been a while.
