Valentines does exist in Japan. You have it a bit mixed up. Valentines is when women give gifts to men. White Day, a month later on March 14th, is when men give gifts (white chocolate) to women.
Poor japs, I can imagine they creating high expectations just to have their self-esteem crushed by the lack of a single sweety.

Black Day is for single people in general, not just guys.
In Korea, Valentine's Day is a day for girls to give gifts to guys, White day is the opposite, and Black Day is for everyone else.
There's also Pepero Day, which is for young couples.
