To the SQUARE ENIX community:

As you know, Japan has been hit with a terrible disaster this week. We have received and greatly appreciate all the kind words of concern from our fans and players.

As a result of the earthquake, we temporarily may have to shut down the servers hosting FINAL FANTASY XI and FINAL FANTASY XIV.

We are now analyzing the situation and studying very hard what we can do to fulfill our social responsibilities under the unusual circumstances, and to mitigate the inconvenience to our players. According to our best estimate at this point, we will temporarily have to shut down the servers shortly. We will give you as much advance notice as possible under the rapidly changing circumstances. If the servers are shut down, we will try to provide updates in the Information section of our Official Website below.

FINAL FANTASY XIV , The Lodestone: http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com/
FINAL FANTASY XI Official Website: http://www.playonline.com/

We sincerely apologize and appreciate your understanding.

Understandable. I'm guessing people will have extension to their paid time once the service will resume. By the way, did the free time extension on 14 end?

Good on them. I'm not a player of XI/XIV, but I was considering trying out my copy of XI some time. It's a time of rebuilding.

I think at this point there are more important matters than videogames.

I remember on 9/11 I used to frequent the IGN Gamecube boards, and on that day there was a topic that was along the lines of "Will the World Trade Center disaster delay the gamecube launch?" and the post was like "i hope it doesnt delay it too long if anything."

Needless to say this kid got torn a new asshole.

Uhhh ok, doesn't mean that users shouldn't be aware of what may happen to the servers they currently play on.

No.

PS3 version has also been put on hold indefinitely.

wait - what?
it's really free to play for the foreseeable future?

how cheap can I get it on PC now (assuming it HAS been updated since broken launch)?
damn that may seem worth it. does it have an active player base?

Whoa I was not aware this game went completely FTP until they made it up to snuff.

Kinda sad I haven't even heard about this, and that the game has been damaged so bad that press like this hasn't reached everyone.

To all the people complaining that there are more important things going on right now :

SHUT UP !!

The whole world didn't stop because of a disaster that happened half-way across the world(or next door if you're in Japan). Yes it's terrible, we all agree. But life goes on and discussions continue regardless of the disaster.

In the aftermath of this disaster there are going to be plenty of consequences for us as gamers and we have a right to discuss them without you people frowning down on us.

You should have went the 'he didn't say it was more important, but..." route.

In before a name quote. Yes it's bad and gamers MAY have consequences, but if you are explicitly blaming the lack of your ability to entertain yourself in a game on an unpredictable natural disaster that has been catastrophic, then you really, really need a reality check. Discussing implications is fine, blaming through causation is not.

Exactly. I guess we're all supposed to gather our shit and move to the Earthquake thread to sing campfire songs and unite.

He looks like a righteous douchebag posting that shit at the beginning of this thread. Like no one can discuss anything until this blows over.

GTFO.

Amazon has the standalone listed for $26 (15% off msrp)

CE for $55.

Both are great steals. I bought my CE copy for a lot more money than $55 =/

Is anyone in this thread SAYING that everyone should just go back to work like nothing happened? No. We have every right to discuss the effect that the earthquake will have on the gaming industry. This is a gaming forum, after all. We're discussing gaming, and the effect that the quake has on it, not sitting around going "YEAH FUCK THE QUAKE, GET BACK TO WORK AND MAKE MY VIDEO GAMES" like you seem to think we are.

Overreactions every time someone asks a question about logisitical consequence of the quake are getting annoying. You guys sound like self righteous pricks...

Nobody asking those questions ever said the people weren't important, or that the quake wasn't horrible. Nobody. It's a truly awful event and I'm sure everybody here is aware of that...

In all seriousness, I'm pretty sure he wasn't saying "ok people in Japan are dying lets move on" but more that we should be allowed to talk about other things without someone coming in here and telling us to worry about something else that is more important.

Of course the disaster in Japan is important, but what lupinko did was enter a thread unrelated to the actual earthquake, just to tell us the earthquake is more important. It will potentially affect gameplay for some users, and they should know this, don't you think?

Where did I say that people should shut up and go back to work right now for my entertainment products while ignoring the drama that just happenned in their country ?

What I said is that people need to stop complaining about people discussing the consequences for the gaming industry on a GAMING DISCUSSION FORUM !! We know there are moreimportant things than our games and we do feel terrible for the people affected, however we still have the right to discuss what consequences this disaster will have for us as gamers.

Why post on a videogame forum, then?
He's talking about what's going in Japan, and that we shouldn't be caring about the severs at this time. I mean, there's more then 10 percent of Japan without power, and near a thousand people dead.

Is this for both XI and XIV or just XIV? I was logged on to XIV when they sent out the first message, and it said "XI and XIV", but a few minutes ago when I read the last message, it only said "Servers for Final Fantasy XIV" which led me to believe it was only for XIV.

Either way, despite the fact that I am a somewhat active player of XIV and have lots of friends that play XI, I support their decision to shut down the servers temporarily. The energy used to power the servers can be used for better things right now.

No one explicitly said "Fuck videogames we should only be talking about the quake!" either. People need to stop overreacting over small shit like this. Extrapolations like a motherfucker in this thread.

Square says they are temporarily shutting down servers in response to the quake and will plan for next steps once a national emergency has blown over. Nowhere within this is your right to be ignorant about external issues affecting the game industry and the relative importance of such versus your own entertainment, or ignorant about the implications this will have on FFXI and FFXIV.

They might also be turning them off cause Japan's president is encouraging the country to conserve electricity during the current nuclear crisis.

Typical of SE only looking out for their own kind. They sure as hell didn't shut down servers when Katrina hit.

Going to have to agree. Blatant disrespect aside, a question/thread about games on a game discussion forum should never be shot down for non-gaming reasons.

Did Katrina spark electricity and resource shortages all across Japan?

Yet everytime the Japanese games industry has been mentioned the last few days someone comes in and says "Your discussion is invalid, Japan earthquaked, your games don't matter" Which is pretty much a guaranteed thread-derailer and should be a bannable offense IMO.

I lolled hard ( for those unaware it's a parody of like a million FB posts about the Japan earthquake) IE , it's a joke

But it never was. People pulled this bullshit argument out of their ass that a comment saying that a national emergency is more important than videogames somehow translates into "you should not discuss the implications this will have on gamers." Completely out of the ass, with emotions mixed in so that people got really, really angry about something that wasn't said.

And just who in the hell is actually doing that? Until you find someone that is, a stfu is in order. This is like the 3rd thread you guys have ambushed with your guilt tripping BS. Noone anywhere is being an asshole about it.

That'd be a thread derailer and ignorant to say, because implications do exist and should be discussed, but not worthy of a ban I think. The difference comes in priority, some people may think it's premature to care about how this affects you first before how it affects millions in Japan firsthand.

I'm just saying you guys extrapolated lupinko and others comments a wee bit far to the point of giving them completely different meaning and connotations.

Which isn't true. Those people come in to threads to tell us we are wrong and disrespectful, which we are not. We have every right to discuss without being reminded every 5 second that Japan earthquaked and 1000's died. We know that and care, yet we also care about our games.

They come into these threads not to add to the discussion at hand but to show off their high and mighty morals compared to people that just move on at a faster pace.

Dude what are you talking about? There were no others, just lupinko. He came in here BEFORE ANYONE ELSE, and told basically everyone that would come in that the earthquake situation is more important than anything else right now.

True to a point, but how can you tell us not to talk about the FFXIV servers going down in a topic specifically for them on a message board? I'm sure someone here is playing these games and would like to know that!

The situations and "arguements" and blah blah that you stated don't even exist here. Come on.
