Jay Mariotti arrested on domestic violence charge

Man I just don't get people that take sports journalism so seriously. Around The Horn exists as much for its entertainment value as it does for its journalistic purposes. Woody Paige is the most consistently entertaining person on the show, without him it would be boring as hell.

Seems I agree with GAF for what must be the 11th time since I joined in early 2001. Mariotti comes across as exactly the kind of guy who would beat up a woman.

Exactly, what does the first letter in "ESPN" stand for again?

These guys aren't journalists, they're attention whores. Everything they say is one extreme or the other, exactly the same as the talking heads on political shows. I'm a big Cincinnati Reds fan (not some bandwagon asshole, I was there through Gookey Dawkins, Ryan Dempster, Brandon Larson, Eric Milton, etc) and the Reds board I lurk on is FURIOUS at Colin Cowherd for referring to the Reds as "frauds". The Cardinals were the kings and Cincinnati are just pretenders to the throne. Joey Votto, despite having the best numbers in the league, didn't deserve to be an All-Star because he wasn't a "star". He plays in Cincinnati, he's never even had a national commercial for Gatorade! I see these guys for what they are, it's just trolling.

6. Colin Cowherd
7. Jay Mariotti
8. Tim Cowlishaw
9. Jim Rmoe
10. Bill Plaschke
11. Rachel Nichols

edit: forgot Ed Werder, he should be in the top 5 or something.

Already posted, and sixteen years old.

I get the hate for Jim Rome circa 2000, but I don't get it now. I think he's a really solid guy. Still brutally honest at times, but not a belligerent jackass like he used to be.
Congrats.

I am in between. I get that Jim now is a hugely different guy from Jim then. Only problem I have is while he's mellowed out, I don't think he's ever admitted how big a douche he was back in the day. He just sort of acts like that part doesn't really exist even if he's better now.

Add Adande & SVP to the likable peeps list. Aside from them, and others listed like Simmons (who can also be annoying on occasion)/Paige/Ryan, it's definitely slim pickings over at the worldwide leader. :lol

Hate: How have we gone this long without mentioning Rick Reilly? That guy was terrible before he joined ESPN and now he is 100x worse.
Also, Chris Berman is rather obnoxious.

Like: Jon Miller, who does baseball games with Joe Morgan, is quite good. Bob Ley from OTL. Jeremy Schaap, aside from how he finishes his reports by saying "espn" all funny.

Actually most of the actual news reporters (Outside the Lines types) are quite decent, unlike the personalities* and sportswriters. Sportscenter anchors are 50/50.

Tony Reali and the PTI guys are exceptions for me. Some might also include Mike and Mike in that group.

Anyone see the ATH shows where Jay Mariotti and Woody Paige were covering the same event and it was by the coast? At the end of the week they showed a clip of Mariotti and Paige walking down the beach together in Hawaiian shirts and swimsuits.

Yeah maybe Jay Mariotti is an asshole but the guy writes about sports. It seems harsh that the guy gets his personal life scrutinized. What have sports become?

ESPN is a smugness factory. They must bottle that shit up and sell it to Hot Topic or something.

Good thing Buccigross and Van Pelt don't come off that way. Trey Wingo and Stuart Scott are the worst though.

Doesn't Mariotti spend half his time scrutinizing the private lives of professional athletes? How would he react if an athlete was facing these charged?

He scrutinizes athletes personal lives on television everyday for his own personal gain/ego/celebrity. Sports personalities are as fair game as the athletes they write about.

Don't all work for ESPN. Don't care.

Every single one of should jump in the nearest sausage grinder asap.

Woody Paige is awesome.

Don't understand how anyone can call him a douche.

.

Plenty of douchebags at ESPN but Woody isn't one of them.

Dan Levitard. No one else comes close. ESPN has joke characters, confirmed.

His wife must have caught him cheating. When I used to work at ESPN Zone he would always bring in smoking hot girls who looked like they were 18 years old. He would take them to the private box and provide them with free liquor and close the shades. I saw him walk out of there pretty drunk a couple of times. He actually doesn't seem like a bad guy in real life, I talked to him a couple of times and my friend was his assistant on Around the Horn and he said hes a pretty cool guy.

Mariotti is douchebag.

I like Colin Cowherd, if only for his radio show.

Josh Elliot and Neil Everett are the best Sportscenter anchors. Albeit, I can barely watch ESPN anymore due to how shitty just about everything is.

I like Woody Paige. He has an awesome sense of humor, which seems to be devoid in many of you.

Same here.

I don't really pay attention to all of the people on ESPN but good lord Jim Rome can go get bent.

woody paige is awesome. he doesn't take anything seriously.

rome, cowherd, marrioti, etc all actually believe their shit and wish they could suck their own cocks

How could I forget Rick Reilly? AKA Smug Bastard?

Adam Schefter...And Chris Broussard (that guy bounced around every ESPN show making a different guess about where Lebron was going to play...I swear he showed up on Nascar Now talking about how Chicago is the front runner for LeBron)

Schefter actually wasn't that bad on the NFL Network. Once he moved to ESPN, he became a total douchebag.

Stuart "Holla at a playa when you see him in the street" Scott. The best thing about this dude is the post people make imitating him in GAF sports threads.

There are whole host of other assholes, but Stuart stands out because he's everywhere.

Lol Jay Mariotti. He spends so much time criticizing athletes for stuff like this and now does it himself. Guess he wont be coming back in awhile/ever.

:( at the Jim Rome + Woody hate. Those guys are cool, I usually cant stand radio shows with a single host but Rome is okay and Woody is funny as hell.

Also while on similar topic. WTF at PTI...this show has been unwatchable lately with Tony and Michael ALWAYS on vacation. Nothing against Bob and Dan but they are horrible at hosting a show...

Doug Gottlieb

Agreed in liking Gottlieb, he's actually a real person and willing to voice an opinion. Even, at times, one that goes against the Empire or ESPN personalities. I'm sure that's why he's going nowhere fast.

It's pointless arguing about ATH, it's meant to be silly and pointless.

Jim Rome lets the Sklar brothers do his radio show sometimes. That redeems him a bit. Some of the writers in soccer, tennis, and hockey are okay, too. Otherwise...

Greg Doyel from CBS is just blowing up on Mariotti on Twitter.

http://twitter.com/greggdoyelcbs

"Mariotti behind bars with the scum of the earth. And the scum of the earth sees him and says, 'There goes the neighborhood.'"

"After two hours of this, I've received ZERO tweets asking me to lay off. Looks like I've heard from all of Mariotti's friends"

"Anyone know what it means to toss a salad? In a few days, maybe Mariotti will tell us."

"Here's the online arrest report. Skimpy. No details, like how hard Mariotti cried when they cuffed him: http://bit.ly/a402GS"

""For County facility visiting hours, Please call (213) 473-6080 at Inmate Information Center." Tell Mariotti I said, "Hi, and f-- you.""

"OK I'm done. Thank you for listening. And thank you, Jay, for being you. What's that Jay? I can't understand you. Something in your mouth..."

"Along with the mug shot of Mariotti, can someone find a picture of the alleged girlfriend, and her seeing-eye dog?"

:lol :lol

There's like 4 hours worth of insults here.

I don't understand why Skip is high on that list, he was right about Lebron when everyone else on ESPN was on their knees.
I agree. Skip isn't a douche, but he says some dumb things
