Jay Wilson moving on from Diablo III

It's funny every goddamn time.

I have never seen a developer, who going by Dawn of War alone is obviously quite talented, so completely fail to comprehend what it was about their previous game which made it good and well loved.

You'd be surprised it happens more often then not :(

You must not have been on the forums much during WotLK then, there was a lot of bitching about how the game was too easy. A lot. Pretty much every thread that talked about difficulty talked about how easy WoW was. Blizzard addressed that and then people bitched even louder. No win situation.

Pretty much this. 5 mans were snoozefests and required no effort to clear. They scrapped so many mechanics that required players to be on their toes in the dungeons and raids, that folk with gear from WOTLK attempting older raids like Naxx found it hard to survive as thier skills were dulled from the spoon feeding in WotLK.

Everything was made accessible to the masses, and they lapped it up. To be fair though, the ones complaining before and after the changes were made were most likely two seperate demographics who wanted different things out of the game.

I really hate the auction house with a passion. It seems like that is the reason cool stuff doesn't drop in game. I have found ZERO set items after hours and hours of play and no uniques in one playthrough. There should be lower level uniques in the beginning difficulties to make it fun. I guess they don't want to lower the real money cost of these things selling in the auction house? I have no clue but I hope the Diablo 3 expansions fix this stuff. I will never buy anything from the auction house, whether it be for real money or for in game gold.

The fun is finding items, not buying them.

Diablo 3 is designed like it's a free to play game.

Can't blame him for wanting to work on something else after 7 years on the same game, yikes.

My favorite game of 2012, discounting Dark Souls PC (since I had already played that on the PS3).

I almost reinstalled diablo 3 today, then i remembered it cannot be fixed.

Biggest dissapointment of this generation.

Yes - Brad McQuaid comes to mind (Made EQ a success - drove Vanguard completely into the ground)

I heard Brad wasn't even involved with a lot of the development of Vanguard and was basically out of the office all the time. I've heard a lot of stories about the horrible development of that game actually, including that the release build was more of an alpha than anything. No clue what's real and what's not.

The problem with Diablo III is that they basically tried to take the design decisions that worked in WoW and transplant them to another (albeit similar) genre.

I think this is Blizzard's undoing: they have one game that has achieve ridiculous amounts of success by capturing a blue ocean demographic and consequently they think that making every game with a similar intent will capture that market. It just doesn't work like that.

To be fair, at least the StarCraft II dev team hasn't all lost their minds.

i had so much fun with 3 D3 until i had 3 characters at level 60. that took me probably more hours than the combined hours from other games i enjoyed last year. from my POV he delivered the goods. can't hate, great game, will buy all extensions.

Yeah, well, like he says, the game wasn't made by one person. Whatever, who cares about some internal shuffling of people around Blizzard. Where's the expansion?

Starcraft 2's problems weren't so much with the game itself but rather with Battle.net 2.0. With that said, it doesn't appeal to me because team games are awfully executed, no doubt because the game is being balanced around 1v1.

There is the no LAN fiasco though.

You shouldn't compare D3 to other games - you should compare it to D2.

And the good news with that is Blizzard has pretty much completely scrapped their Battle.net team and started from the ground up again for HOTS.

The SC2 dev team doesn't fix things nearly as quickly as the fans would like, but they do listen and they do implement positive change.

Players 8 didn't work on closed battle.net I believe though. So a lot of players couldn't make use of it.

Oh it worked, You just had to join some low act game and farm mefisto/baal by Yourself :P Thats how i roled with my sorc for a while :)

I had fun until I hit the cap. The Auction House (+RMAH) and Itemization was a disaster, that and recycled content was enough for me to log out and never play it again. It cant be fixed

Diablo 3 was so terrible, but, at least it introduced me to the forgotten GEM Sacred 2: Fallen Angel. It's Diablo 3 done right.

Poor Ascaron :(

I really really hope the new IP owners do as well with Sacred 3. I also hope it even ever sees the light of day again.

If he made a long winded post about this on the official forums then it's safe to say that Jay didnt leave the Diablo 3 team, this fool was let go.

And I think this is another step in a calculated effort for Blizzard and the Diablo 3 team to save face as we approach Blizzcon 2013 and the upcoming announcement of the game's first expansion pack.

Is this true? Good riddance.

The new Battle.net actually did a lot to damage D3 as well, probably more in my eyes than SC2, though people argue about it.

They somehow managed to completely flip the "public games are good", social mentality of Diablo 2, which drove the game's longevity. Removing chat, making private games the default option instead of open, game lists, and any kind of meaningful PVP interaction (which basically was the end game, and the reason many kept playing long after they were able to beat the PVE elements with ease) basically destroyed the game. That and weapon DPS were the two biggest errors they made IMO.

Completely shattered any sense of community.

It's more of a "won't" than a "can't.". Removing the auction house would do a lot of good, but that's not gonna happen.

That said, the game's in much better shape than it was at launch. It's not great by any stretch, but it's good.

Don't forget the splitting of MF amongst party members! It actively discouraged MF players from playing with their friends.

Nailed it. 100% agree. The game is fun but the fun is very short lived thanks to the shitty loot system.
Well, short lived is a relative term here. Compared to Diablo II? Maybe. Compared to most other games? Not short lived at all.

I had fun until I reached the completely broken endgame. That's a solid 50+ hours.

Excellent. I'm glad you mentioned the community part. The game is way too mechanical.

just curious, does anyone even play any more?

I played like 60-70 hours but then there was really nothing else to do. Are people still selling shit on the auction house? I can't believe anyone would still be playing the exact same content with no PVP or other randomized fun encounter at this point.
I played the trial version awhile back and liked it. Not enough to cough up $60 for the full thing though.

He was instrumental in driving the franchise to the ground. and now, seeing how much work is needed to fix it he is like "..well, its about time for me to hit the ol' dusty trail."

God, don't remind me :(. Completely shat up their decision to give everyone their own separate loot drops too, because you weren't rewarded for jack or shit by playing with others, even though (going by their design philosophy) by all rights they shouldn't have been impacting your drops at all.

how come everyone hates him?

A much loved franchise was run into the ground on his watch. Some of the main complaints were the real money auction house, always online requirement, no ladders, poor quality of loot, no end game, no pvp. (They have taken steps to try and address some of these issues).

One of the creators of the Diablo IP was critical of D3, so Jay Wilson said "Fuck that loser" on twitter in response, and was given a load of high fives by various Blizzard staff. That made a lot of Diablo fans angry.

I hope now the series has a bright future. Despite my issues with the game, the fans who still play deserve a great game. They might get one now.

The only way the series has a bright future is if they make diablo 4 and beg for the original developers to come back.

An expansion of a shitty product won't fix the core issues.

Diablo 3's Legacy:

Forum post #1: best place to farm by myself?

Forum post #2: price check on [Bul'Kathos Divine Scepter of Greed]

Forum post #3: can I handle Monster Power 10 solo?

Forum post #4: just hit 990 million gold. what now?

Not gonna lie, I'd rather see D4 with all the issues fixed day 1, than a D3 that ends up like Carrot Top. Not saying thats what will happen, but there's some huge hurdles to overcome.

His ultimate sin may not have been that twitter post but it was the death knell. Gamers have a long memory and are generally unforgiving. He should've known better.

I haven't forgotten. Arrogant, good to see him off the project completely maybe we can get something decent in the future. Although it is disheartening to know he is still there able to ruin another franchise in the future :(

Solid game, best in class combat system and the skill tree was a work of art in terms of design. But it couldn't feed the aspergians relentless demand for addiction enabling "content".

Hopeless fanbase.
