Jet Set Radio Future Needs Some Love

Hello Allison, I wanna hold your hand
I haven't been the same man since I saw you coming in
Let's have a toast for the girl in Aisle 10

This game kicks so much ass. I played it on the 360 but thinking about replaying it on Xbox Original now I got component cables since certain areas on the Xbox 360 version hit 10fps or less. After playing the original on Dreamcast I was so disappointed by how slow it felt compared to the sequel.

Yeah, I ended up buying an OG Xbox to play JSRF on because of the horrible BC on the 360. I got one BRAND NEW on eBay, never opened or anything, for $200. I thought it was a great deal, but it's the last model they released. Something about the graphics chip makes it so that you can't play some Sega games in 480p, which is really upsetting. However, the JSRF/Sega GT bundle works fine in 480p, which is nice.

ANYWAY, all the more reason for an HD version to be released. Glorious 1080p and a solid frame rate would be wonderful. I worry about the soundtrack, though. Confident all of the important
Hideki Naganuma
tracks would remain, though.

As amazing as JSRF is, the changes made it so much less intense than JSR.

The fenced of areas you fight the cops in is really lame, for starts the fence just appears from nowhere... Then you barge and tag the cops with ease.

Now in JSR the cops chase you around the city, to attempt a large tag is risky, so you need to get them out of the way before they get serious... They end up sending fucking choppers worth missile launches at you which seems a tad excessive but it's cool and intense!

All that is lost in JSRF, the only risk is falling.

I think JSR is the better game even though JSRF controls better, looks better, sounds better etc

Yeah, they need to bring back the old franchises like Crazy Taxi, JSRF, Panzer Dragoon, and Outrun. I could name many more, but these are my favorites... Sega used to be like Nintendo in the way they released great games in every genre. Now we're lucky to get a great game in general out of them.

This already happened in the most Monkey Paw esque fashion

Hm. Wouldn't mind playing it again. But after it was revealed that the digital port of Jet Set Radio failed to live up to expectations, I doubt we'll ever see a port of JSRF.

Simply my favorite game, ever. Nothing else plays like it...except the original game.

I'll concede that Birthday Cake brings down the soundtrack as a whole, but aside from that single blemish JSRF's soundtrack is better than JSR's soundtrack (which was still very good).

Absolutely not. That song is one of the soundtrack's highlights. When I first played JSRF I thought it was terrible, but it slowly grew on me. Now it's one of my favorite tracks.

Extra sugar, Extra salt! Extra oil and MSGGGG!

Jet Set Radio is one of the best games I've ever played. Jet set Radio Future is my GOAT. I loved the huge levels, and thanks to the improvements they made on the controls, you could actually traverse whole levels in a minute or so. I have like three copies of the game, and I've played it to completion several times.

Just give me a reason to buy it multiple times again Sega.

The addition of boost and the trick system was good, but holy shit did Jet Set Radio Future rely on that graffiti combat system which felt completely misplaced in this game save for one boss fight.

Needless to say it's why I prefer the original.

I prefer the original because of the timer. JSRF suffers from a lack of urgency for me. I also prefer JSRs level design even though its less open then Future. And the soundtrack is better in the first game.
I like Birthday Cake though.

I'd still love to see a re-release of JSRF though.

Yeah, I hated the song too. But eventually it became a favorite. That whole soundtrack blends to fucking well I want to go play it right now.

One of my top ten games for sure.

I don't know how it's gone so long being too far under the radar. The soundtrack alone is phenomenal. How did the original get a re-release, but not this?

... Oh, I forgot that SEGA only cares about f2p games now

Jet Set Radio Future coming to mobiles!

Graffiti cans refill one every two hours, or buy them individually for $2.99 each.

Oh no! You got caught by the police! You will be released in 48 hours. Bail yourself out for $9.99? [Yes][No]

You can't play this level as Beat is tired. Please wait 24 hours or purchase a stamina upgrade for $4.99.

I've been holding out for an HD remaster for years now, but I've recently bought a component cable for my Xbox and will try playing it some more this week. I doubt I'll find time for another full play-through though. Hopefully Sega will come to their senses and let us play it in glorious HD on a modern system soon.

The soundtrack is awesome and I listen to it regularly. My username can attest to that.

I agree Future is the superior game in all ways. Although the graffiti quick time events of the third was good. I wish we'd get a kickstarter or something for a third game if Sega ain't gonna bother.

Jet Set Radio is overall a worse game. I mean, I hold it dear as any Dreamcast fan would, but the sequel just fixed it. Some complain about the streamlined spraying, but I find it better in this one.

Opinion invalidated right there, JSRF is a good game but it doesn't surpasst he original.

Peoples' main complaint always seems to be that it's "easier" and so they don't like it, but I would contest that when a game controls as poorly as JSR did making it easier to play isn't exactly a fault.

Argh! Goddammit NO! That's not the complaint JSR fans have with Future. The problem isn't that it's easier.. it's that it's missing all the core gameplay!! Future removed essentially anything that resembled an obstacle to the player in the first game. There was a thread a here about JSRF a long time ago, that had a quote that I thought explained what JSR fans dislike about Future very well.

Something about JSRF makes it feel really empty.

Someone who's opinion I respect described it as "playing a level in Doom where you've killed every enemy and are just running around the empty map looking for that last key."

I think that's an almost perfect description of how this game makes you feel.

Future felt like a game with all the enemies and challenges stripped out.. leaving the player to simply navigate a dead world hunting collectibles (which is basically what the graffiti had been reduced to as well). It's not that it was easier, it's that it seemingly missed the whole goddamned point.

Also Professor K sucked in Future.

Oh no! You got caught by the police! You will be released in 48 hours. Bail yourself out for $9.99?

Sounds better than JSRF already. :P

As someone who loved JSRF and considers it one of his favourite games of all time, I didn't play the original until the HD treatment and I feel like playing it in that order did it no favours. More restrictive gameplay, worse controls, it doesn't hold a candle to Future in my eyes.

Yup, JSRF is more of an "experience" than a game, great visuals and music... The only challenge is making the jumps and timing the rail tricks.

The challenge is tacked on in the form of the caged fight with police, I wanted to be chased by military man!

Same, I don't think I even got past the tutorial/first level or whatever in the HD version.

I still have my og disc from the JSRF/Sega GT 2002 Xbox bundle that came out forever ago.
One of the first games I ever played to be honest and I'll never forget it.
I still have mine packed up somewhere but no xbox to play it. I absolutely loved this game, why the dreamcast version got the hd treatment and not this....I'll never know.

Jet Grind Radio was one of my favorite console experiences in years on the Dreamcast. I specifically bought an XBox 1 at launch because I knew JSRF would be exclusive.

I was pretty damn let down when I actually played it. Doesn't come close to being as good as the original.

Because it's better :)
JGR is moer original, JSRF is a better video game.

As long as no one tries to pull the hokey as hell "JSR has bad controls and barely anyone getting the steam achievement for the skippable tutorial mode buried away in a menu proves it!!!" argument like in past threads it should be alright

I love JSR, but getting a 50 combo in that level is not exactly the easiest thing to do in the game...

Fuck you! Cibo Matto is amazing.

WHOA WHOA WHOA

Sure, Birthday Cake literally sounds worse than nails on a chalkboard the first time you hear it, but it gets better with every listen, eventually becoming amazing.

Yep. It wouldn't be JSRF without the crazy Birthday Cake song.

This game is indeed awesome, I just didn't care for how they boxed you in at points when dealing with rivals or the authorities. The stage progression flowed better in the original IMO, but otherwise it was an improvement over JSR.

JSRF is great, just very different from JSR in terms of design.

It's a tragedy that it didn't get the HD treatment, since it runs like shit emulated on 360, and it's too much trouble to wip out the OG Xbox.

I don't think it will happen, when even a portion of the fanbase feels the need to point out how bad and sacrilegious it was, to move away from the more arcade elements of the first one, to a more console collectathon style platformer.

If there was ever a campaign to bring it back, i think you'd see a lot of fans voice their opinion to not do it, which makes me sad, since i love both JSR and JSRF equally, for different reasons.

Then again when JSRHD came out, a lot of reviews shat on it for the bad controls, so who knows?

a completely optional thing that i imagine most skip shouldnt be the barometer if the controls are good is my point
its a hacky argument that ive seen brought up numerous times like its some trump card

Hideki Naganuma retweeted someone playing it on the 360 today and i didnt know just how bad the glitches could get

Thought it was pretty bullshit how you unlocked the music of it in the HD game instead of just releasing it. I loved it more than the original as a kid but IDK if I'll feel the same today.
