This is currently the major redeeming feature of Wii U; being able to play with my kids as they get old enough to game. For me though things are looking a little bleak wrt third party western games. And seeing a I will probably be a single console owner next generation, I'll be bummed if it doesn't get a lot of games for me too.

I made this point earlier, but it always ends up going back to software. MS has a stranglehold on developer relations. They own that arena because they are willing to put $50 million down for DLC.
People saw the gulf in support between the platforms, and it became their dominant platform. That's why there was limited core adoption on the Wii. Lack of support. If Nintendo could have gotten any exclusive support from big publishers. A new Chrono, an exclusive Assassin's Creed, some quality titles to spur growth in key genre's, the platform could have been something on the scale gaming hasn't seen. It's first three years eclipsed the PS2's by a high margin. It was on track to sail way past the 50 million unit mark in America alone.
But around the time Nintendo stopped publishing new titles, all 3rd party pubs had decided to do the same thing. Most of them hadn't really tried. A few found success. Usually in titles so easy it would be hard to fuck them up.
I never really got the issue developers had. Not sure your series would be a success on a Nintendo platform? GTA for instance. In the first couple of years of the systems life port your three GTA's with a few motion gimmicks. IR aiming, and motion beatdowns.
See how they do on a userbase that might not have played them.
It's not fucking rocket science.

The western video game industry is pathetic.
It turns into an hollywood-multimedia-oligopoly which loses more money than greece, steadily betting on low-profit-smartphone-games, hoping to stop the monster they created.

That's the one that amazes me.
They had proof of a fairly large audience that bought a freaking ported GCN game in massive quantities and they respond by releasing nothing like it again.

I'm not going to act like there wouldn't be an expense, but when you're making a $100 million dollar game like GTAIV it might have been smart to have another cash flow as a supplement.
It's like watching a trainwreck in super slow motion.
Nobody was going to support Wii because it would require a hell of a lot of effort to get a game like GTA4 running on it. I never really got why they didn't port the PSP GTA games over, but in general Wii was a pain in the ass for publishers to have to consider. They'd invested in next gen and having to take risks on an unproven platform wasn't appealing.
Well yeah, why cheaply port things over and create an ecosystem on a possible haven for mid-tier development if your entire strategy is to remove mid-tier development from existence? Which is what they were doing.

Yeah, as a 360 gamer I'm totally amped because if that leaked document is even half true they're gonna "totally dominate" in bleeding more money again for the next 6-10 years. But at least we'll get third parties and a bunch of streaming media, right?

Your mom's not the only one. Had a friend ask me when the new mario game he saw footage of on YT was going out for the Wii.
Once I explained that there was no new game coming for his Wii but for a new console called Wii U, he was pretty pissed. Why didn't they make it clearer and so on and so forth.
And his reaction when I showed him a pic of the new console? It looks just like a wii.
This guy isn't stupid, but even he was fooled/misled into thinking the U controller and its games were for the Wii he had at home and that there was no new console.

Every single person Ive told about Wii U have reacted with excitement. I guess its about the delivery, huh? If you say Nintendo has really F'd up, its actually a new console, a total marketing joke right? compared to Its a brand new full HD console, with this amazing touch screen controller! ..and Pikmin 3 is coming for it! And this Zombi U game looks really cool! and actually say whats great about it youd get quite different responses.

If articles talk about how Wii U is a brand new console, but then people ask if it can be bought with Wii, I don't know who's respondible for this. If it's clear in the article that it's a new platform, then it's just what always happen with every console, when people go and ask if "Mario can be played on PS2".

Reminds me when I saw this woman come into the Gamestore and asked the clerk why Smugglers Run wasn't working on her sons Playstation. When she learned that it only worked on the PS2 she was also pissed.
Or my mother asking me why I needed a new Nintendo to play Turok, when there was a perfectly fine Nintendo (SNES) in our living room...
Anecdotal evidence but no matter how obvious a new system might be, it's allways lost on some people.

Also their are trying to sell to people where the wii was their first game console ever so they have no idea how console cycles work.

Yup, with him it's to do with the fact that he only bought a Wii last year so an upgrade so soon (to him as he hasn't had the wii for long) is what pissed him off.
So far, one (1) journalist might have made this mistake, and I say might because he claimed that his article was incorrectly changed by an editor.

That's not accurate. Fallon said immeidiately it was a new console but he assumed the console was just the tablet.
Think about it. People view tablets as fully fledged systems.
His confusion was over how the tablet worked with the original Wii.
Nintendo did a good job at making the actual console as invisible as possible.

SUPER NES was released 4 months later??? (as an aside, it really shows how amazing the NES library was that we were still willing to choose it that late in the game)

Saying the Wii has been dead for several years is an exaggeration. The Wii party wasn't over until 2011, the fifth year of the cycle. For example in 2010, they offered:

2011 still had a popular Zelda title and a Kirby game, but with 3rd parties being unresponsive throughout the gen, it just made a bad situation look even worse.
So why did momentum take such a bad turn in 2011? I blame the 3DS, actually. I could easily see games like Kid Icarus: Uprising, Luigi's Mansion 2, and Paper Mario being Wii titles if they weren't so concerned about the 3DS's rocky start.
So if they didn't enter that panic mode and shift focus on putting out the 3DS fire, the Wii fire probably wouldn't have started. And Pikmin 3 and NSMB 2 could probably be Wii titles, too, if things played out differently.
I actually think Wii's early runaway success convinced Nintendo at the time to stretch out their cycle a bit further. Once momentum stopped so rapidly, they had to change course and get back on their "traditional" cycle. Their rush to do so has resulted in a message that I'm picking up as not confident. I'm seeing microgames instead of AAA titles at launch, confusing branding, etc.
It's because instead of Nintendo being able to delight the near 100 million Wii userbase with their new idea on their terms, they're thinking "Oh shit oh shit we need a new product now!"

Nah, I think it is too late to change the name now. Wouldn't that cause more confusion? People will say "So, can I still get the Wii U add-on for my Wii?" "I see Wii 2 also comes with the Wii U add-on, but I'd rather just buy it for the Wii." Wii 2 would've been ideal to start with, though. Or New! Wii.

And then there's always the now very real possibility of system based subscriptions as another option. Yeah, real "desirable" model for consumers in the long run. Oh and Smartglass? Now there's a REAL "add-on" for you.

Don't need to worry. Nintendo will charge you over $300 for dated hardware instead, which I'm sure will be great for Iwata's personal bank account. OOPS. I mean the "health of the industry", and be great for you as a consumer as well.
Nothing beats trying to get as little value for your money as possible.

I thought the initial confusion from last year's E3 would have blown over. I guess I pay (and the rest of GAF) better attention than most people. Of course, we're the minority here. Most people don't follow gaming to the extent we do, thus, things won't necessarily sink in as well wit people who don't. Anyway, I was always under the impression that the Wii U was a new console. Nintendo made it clear through their constant emphasis on "new hardware", "new system", "new platform" and "new home console". I mean, how much clearer could they have possibly been? This is a serious issue. After a year and another E3, there is STILL a great amount confusion. And to make matter worse, the misinformation has spread into mass media. Nintendo is kind of screwed at this point, at least for the first few months to a year.
It's true that Nintendo has shown much more of the game pad, than the actual console itself. I suppose that would lead people to believe that it was just an accessory and not actually new system. Plus, the name doesn't help either.
It's not entirely Nintendo's wrong doing. It's not their fault people don't pay attention. Then again, as a company you can't expect potential customers to automatically know what the hell you're trying to sell. A better name (hell... Wii 2 would have fuckin worked) and less focus on the controller would have done the trick. Of course, people paying a little more attention would be nice too, but that's asking way too much, unfortunately.

Seriously? Yeah, I'm just tossing money to old Iwata McDuck in the moneybin (thing is his money stays in the "bin" and actually accumulates). Ohhhh. Who's pockets are YOU lining? MS execs? Who cares? And oh noes, the dated hardware/more powah thing. Yeah, I'll pay 300.00 for a system with good games, creativity and virtually free streaming media. I like Nintendo games, 360, PS3 it's all good but don't act like the latter two don't have their own epic stumbles and crap pulled on customers as well.
Nintendo airs WiiU commercial which ends with a shot of the Gamepad and console, with. narration/text that says "WiiU console & Gamepad selling for $299. The high price tag lets the non gamer know that this is not a Wii peripheral, but a brand new console. Problem solved.

Yeaaaaa... No. The confusion will still be there because the console looks exactly like the Wii, the name is Wii U instead of Wii 2, and the focus is on the controller which can be mistaken for an add on.
