this is some good stuff
however it's clear Carmack has been able to live and work in a bubble for the past several decades. so when asked the question about crunch, he isn't even considering what if you were a dev working on a game you didn't care that much for, he is just relating it to his own crunch, which is always voluntary, always self motivated. like shutting himself off in a hotel for a week to work non stop, that is not normal. so what's good for him isn't necessarily good for everyone else. thankfully he seems to realize his unique position and doesn't really go into the topic that much.
