John Carmack on Joe Rogan

lol nice. quake 1 had multiplayer?
Yeah rocket arena mod was the most popular, was actually pretty fun. From what I remember multiple people would sit in lobby and wait for your turn for a 1v1 or 2v2. It was fun waiting for your turn and watching others. My fav was one called Jailbreak for quake 2, really fun game.

"Martial arts robots punching on people... that could go poorly"

Listened to most of this on my lunch break. Really enjoyable as expected. Was eye opening when talking about the limitations of mobile SOC's and the 1atom thick wiring problem. 🤯

Halfway through and I already know this isn't gonna be long enough. Props to Joe for having him on and letting him talk away unrestricted.

Amazing podcast. Kudos to Joe for shutting up and allowing John to speak. It was nice to hear someone speak so positively about VR. As someone who was instrumental in early 3D gaming, VR seems like a natural next step for someone who wants to be on the cutting edge of technology and game design.

This is actually kind of boring. I'm only half way through though. Hopefully someone brings up UFOs at some point.

I was kinda surprised that he implied quantum computing wouldn't be super applicable to AI because all my research into the subject and my own experience with ML points to the exact opposite. I might give it another listen though because he jumps around a bit so I probably misunderstood his train of thought.
I mean, QuAIL and google quantum kind of prove how big the potential is.

Some of my favorite vids are ones where some guy clipped together various parts from a Joe Rogan podcast to make funny vids with the clips.

Looking forward to listening to the John Carmack interview at work today.

Fantastic interview, absolutely loved Carmack reaffirming my belief that this bullshit about game developers needing "protection" from their bosses and being overworked is clearly bunk. A thought likely created by people who have no idea what software development is actually like or by developers who have no ambition who want a 9-5 job and don't like crunch time.

Carmack is one of those guys I could listen to on a regular basis, if he ever put together a podcast I'd subscribe, imagine with all his connections what sort of guests he'd be able to interview and talk with.

John Carmack's the coolest geek.

Probably a very high IQ individual, no doubt a major contributor to modern game engine design if not the creator. No fucking common sense or context to his thinking or thought process, the bastard fucking thought he could steal take or acquire files and rewrite code and somehow it magically wasn't theft of intellectual property, lucky not to back in jail (technically the first one was a juvy home), imo, based on the documents in the Zenimax case.

From his perspective, it was basically his work that he did on VR while he was at id, and you can tell he was used to the days before zenimax and all the corporate bullshit that comes with it. It doesn't excuse that it wasn't the "proper" thing to do, but I can see why he'd get into a situation like that.

In the book Masters of Doom, I guess he was evaluated after he was caught breaking and entering as a kid, and they said he had "no empathy", which seems about right if you listen to him talk - kind of like an Android. High intelligence but heavily deficient in many other areas, Tim Sweeney is actually very similar in nature - its actually scary how much they are alike. He was ignorant as to rewriting code and thinking that somehow escaped the notion that its theft, however anyone with two brain cells knows you can't go and take files before setting out the door, especially something worth something.... it seemed like he knew exactly what he is doing. (again, I'm only basing my opinion on the some of the documents of the Zenimax case)

It's funny how Carmack is at fault for the lawsuit but he was not found liable for anything while the other Oculus leads were hit with 500 million dollars in damages :messenger_hushed:
He probably got away with it because he said he rewrote the code and he's John Fucking Carmack so of course he did :messenger_hushed:

Zenimax were stupid for not letting him work on VR with Oculus. Spergs like him need the freedom to work on whatever they want. Armadillo was put on hold anyway. Carmack's replacement is great but he ain't Carmack...

listening right now. already this is pretty good. Oculus Quest looks nice and light. lol 2.5 hours how much of this is gonna be him pimping his VR.

he's talking about the modding, how they didn't really consider it for Wolfenstein but fans figured out how to do it anyways and started swapping Hitler with Barney and stuff. they thought it was so cool that when they made DOOM they made it more mod-friendly. DOOM had - and still has - a healthy mod scene keeping it alive for decades. they released WOLF source code when DOOM came out and then the DOOM source code when Quake came out. now that the source code is out, it has been run on anything with a 32-bit processor and a screen. he says the game will be playable in 100 years.

Just finished.

I'm reminded how optimistic Carmack is for the future. It felt...Almost out of place for the tone of the last few years. Refreshingly out of place. If a genius thinks we've got this, I immediately feel better.

outside of a select few guests, i dont typically listen to the Joe Rogan podcast. i checked this one out at work today and im glad i did, that was great

slapping turbos and melting ferrari engines lol. wish i had the dough to do that!

carmack is programming god, dude is legit. surprised nothing ever came of Ken Silverman in the gaming scene beyond the build engine, the 2 of them seemed game engine prodigies

holy shit, the amount of people in this thread that don't know how Quake 1 changed the FPS multiplayer landscape is just depressing. I know this might be old man yelling at the clouds moment here but fuck, I literally played quake 1 and 2 like jobs during the late nineties summer vacations. Nothing was as fun on 33.6 and 56k modems. NOTHING.

That was pretty good though I'm surprised he didn't pimp the Rift S for seasoned gamers versus talk about the quest. He was also refreshingly frank about VR really being in its infancy which I liked. Made the jump myself recently and albeit I'm loving It at the same time it's with an eye towards tomorrow and what comes next.

Also, Id must have made insane money given all of his various side projects.

Didn't he mention walking into a dealership and buying his Ferrari around the time Wolfenstein released? If he already had that kind of money then, imagine how much he had once Doom and Quake came around.

Wouldn't Carmack be one of those "bosses" that would be someone that other would need protection from? He's literally one of the LAST people I'd listen to when it comes to Crunch in the video game's development talk.

He touches on the fact he has no team management skills and is more of a Lone Ranger. He knows he wouldn't be a good boss and wouldn't know how to get the best out of people except to lead by example.

He has many contacts in the industry and mentions many times he hasn't worked for a major publisher like EA or Activision so can't speak as an authority, but speaks anecdotally. Although he has been around a long time and throughout his time in the industry he cannot say that he has witnessed or been party to forced overtime.

No ONE persons view should be an official statement for an industry, but his view is as valid as anyone else's in the industry. I'd hold his a little higher than most blue check marks, probably more so because he isn't a little bitch. 🤷🏻‍♂️

this is some good stuff

however it's clear Carmack has been able to live and work in a bubble for the past several decades. so when asked the question about crunch, he isn't even considering what if you were a dev working on a game you didn't care that much for, he is just relating it to his own crunch, which is always voluntary, always self motivated. like shutting himself off in a hotel for a week to work non stop, that is not normal. so what's good for him isn't necessarily good for everyone else. thankfully he seems to realize his unique position and doesn't really go into the topic that much.

Yeah that was the main part that was a little out of touch - he said if you were a brilliant employee and left at 5, no one would bother you, but when it's crunch time and you have a hard ship date that's just not the case in the vast majority of modern gaming companies.

at one point he's talking about the importance of sleep and says "I find I can't really work more than 13 hours". like yeah dude, that is a 9am-10pm shift. that's insane lol.

hes a workaholic he loves 60 hour weeks lmao, but more power to him if he enjoys it he advances tech.

Nope at the point he was talking he was in the trenches writing code. I'm sure he still had more pull than your average grunt since he was iDs chief tech officer but he also said that (1:28 in) that if you want to work in an artistic industry that is a side effect.
Power to obsession.
People have free will, they chose that career because they're passionate about gaming. Don't like that maybe you chose the wrong career path

We need a version where Joe is cut out from the video xD

Full, unadulterated Carmack bliss.

Great episode, by the way. I love how passionate he is. Plus, he loves Ferrari.
