Apparently there is a huge backlash now over him using the N-word in the interview.
yeah, but most smart people understand what he means. stupid people will find a reason to argue no matter what.

it's rare to come across someone who at 32, with a life supposedly rich in experience, is so obviously missing the point of everything going on around him, is so emotionally crippled, immature, ignorant, insecure and obnoxious all at the same time. maybe he is the poster child of the current generation. and maybe putting it on display isn't such a bad thing. and maybe it shouldn't baffle me so much that he's seemingly celebrated here for his verbal diarrhea, his fake sincerity and his oh so edgy (dumb and inane) "insights". i'm not offended by anything he said, but i'd be lying if i said it didn't make me feel embarrassed on some level - for him, for his friends and family, for myself somehow.

i think you're overeacting a bit. don't act so mature... it's disgusting.. even if you're older than 32.

People are lining up around the block right now to watch me play music tonight. If some kid called me a douche bag on his terrible blog, I don’t really care. I’m letting myself out of my own prison. I’m not going to be a prisoner to a warden I can’t see. From now on I’m just going to pretend that people really dig the shit out of me. I’ve been so afraid of rocking the boat that I’m not sailing anywhere. I’ve been trying to prove to people I’m not a douche bag by not dating, by keeping my name out of Us Weekly. That’s fucked up, man. I’m not dating. I’m not even fucking. So now I’m going to experiment with “fuck you.” In 2010 my goal is to get more mentions in Us Weekly than ever.

Good stuff. I think so at least.

Definitely an interesting interview but it kind of feels like watching douche being mixed in real time. Like Playboy is the bag and John Mayer is vinegar and the act of reading the interview is like shaking the bag.

That has to be one of the more interesting metaphors I've read in some time

I think his internet porn statements and his desires to be the "special guy" are very true. I really think of him differently now. Jessica Simpson being "sexual napalm" sorta is making me exited in this cubicle now.

If he's such a cool guy, why can't he use his chops to make some good music that isn't aimed at a sorority girl demographic?

That's some good shit right there....

I love his sardonic humor. Sad people blow shit out of proportion with his comments, but so be it. Everyone did the same thing last week with ?uestloves twitpic and the NBC lunch menu.

I would load it up with Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Kenny Burrell and Bill Evans and play CDs while I slept on the floor. Like somehow, by osmosis, the music was getting into me.
I find this hard to believe. His music sounds like generic light rock tripe, and his guitar playing in particular is mediocre at best. I guess the osmosis didn't work, but you can tell he thinks he's this creative fountain whose genius cannot be contained. :lol

Excellent interview, I totally agree with just about everything he said that pertained to masturbation.

the dude is racking millions doing this; he has found a niche. I'm sure he still does stuff he likes with the dudes at the recording studios.

It's obvious the guy has an image he's projecting. You can tell from his comments about Twitter and TMZ and all that jazz. He wants to stay relevant and hip so he's just doing what most narcissistic celebs do.

Still love his music, though. Battle Studies was amazing.

I never paid attention to him before since I thought his music was balls, but I have to say, after that interview, I am a fan. I must support this fellow.

MAYER: If Jennifer Aniston knows how to use BitTorrent I’ll eat my fucking shoe. One of the most significant differences between us was that I was tweeting. There was a rumor that I had been dumped because I was tweeting too much. That wasn’t it, but that was a big difference. The brunt of her success came before TMZ and Twitter. I think she’s still hoping it goes back to 1998. She saw my involvement in technology as courting distraction. And I always said, “These are the new rules.”

PLAYBOY: Did you send Aniston a copy of the CD after it was done?

MAYER: No.

PLAYBOY: Maybe she’ll download it from BitTorrent.

:lol Entertaining interview. But I don't like the guy.

I think the message he wants to get across is that celebrity worship, in general, is fucking retarded in this country. If these publications are going to put his life under a microscope, then he will play a character for them, and exploit the situation for monetary gain.

NeoGAF's smiling token!
MAYER: Here’s what I really want to do at 32: fuck a girl and then, as she’s sleeping in bed, make breakfast for her. So she’s like, “What? You gave me five vaginal orgasms last night, and you’re making me a spinach omelet? You are the shit!” So she says, “I love this guy.” I say, “I love this girl loving me.” And then we have a problem. Because that entails instant relationship. I’m already playing house. And when I lose interest she’s going to say, “Why would you do that if you didn’t want to stick with me?”

PLAYBOY: Why do you do it?

MAYER: Because I want to show her I’m not like every other guy. Because I hate other men. When I’m fucking you, I’m trying to fuck every man who’s ever fucked you, but in his ass, so you’ll say “No one’s ever done that to me in bed.”

it's rare to come across....

Tell us how u really feel.

No, but seriously, what about this interview don't you like? You're pretty much saying in ten different ways that you intensely dislike the guy. I'm curious why this interview strikes u the way it does.

I mean, he's probably trying a bit too hard trying to create a character, but it's hard to deny there's some honesty in there too.

Some folks in this thread seem to be a'hurting in the butt-region. Which makes me wonder, is Johnny in bed with your wives or girlfriends?

Good interview, I like him, and occasionally can identify.
Not with the famous celeb parts obviously

Mayer just seems like what anyone relatively level-headed would become if they had what he does: fame, money, talent, youth, women, and (relative) good looks. He's also a pretty intelligent and witty guy.

Seems to me like he's just playing around and having fun with the fact that he's a celebrity with an awesome life.

lol @ people saying he was trying too hard.

John Mayer is naturally like that. He does stand up comedy for fun once and a while at New York clubs. He's just a really smart and really funny guy.

Really fucking talented too.

wanted to say this. i personally found the interview hard to read through to the end... it comes off completely pompous and contrived (even though it's clearly his intention to sound unconventional and edgy) and just made me fucking cringe through the entire thing.

do you know him personally?

how does anyone know if this is or isnt his personality?

either way, it was a great read, thanks OP :)

Granted, none of us really know the guy, but generally he presents himself like an arrogant jackass, who tries to be funny (but isn't), who's trying to put forth an image of being self-aware.

This is one calculated interview. He knows people view him as a jackass and he's doing some PR (And it's in Playboy...How fucking outdatedly hip!!). The real JM is what we've seen for the past few years. And if you like that, that's cool. But if not, don't be fooled by one interview of his own propaganda.

And Kerry Washington. She’s superhot, and she’s also white-girl crazy. Kerry Washington would break your heart like a white girl. Just all of a sudden she’d be like, “Yeah, I sucked his dick. Whatever.” And you’d be like, “What? We weren’t talking about that.” That’s what “Heartbreak Warfare” is all about, when a girl uses jealousy as a tactic.
..who talks like this? he sounds like an awkward teenager.
