Jonathan Blow doesn't read contracts carefully.

I just love this.

He instantly starts bashing and bitching on Twitter...

While ignoring...

He signed a contract which states they could do that...
They did it four years ago...
He probably was informed or signed off on it...

This is why I have had no interest to play braid or fez or mine craft. Just not a big fan of these indie personalities. They try to sound like they are David taking on Goliath all the time... But they probably get way richer than say if you are the director at a big developer.

Then do the reasonable thing and simply ignore the creators and enjoy their works. Endless numbers of personalities have created great works in the arts and craft, and games are no exception. Chances are things you like are made by assholes and you don't know it. Doesn't change their works and how you can enjoy them fine.

Blow would be naive to think that his game remained at full price after all these years. He doesn't sound that upset about it though, just stating the state of things as he sees them.

And before they became known for these wildly successful games, they probably struggled to make ends meet.

You don't have to stop yourself from playing well-known indie games like the ones you listed either. Even though Jonathan Blow, Phil Fish, and Notch are well-off, other people work at their companies and would like to continue earning a paycheck.

It's hard to keep track of the specifics of your contracts when you spend all of your time convincing everyone how smart/special/unique/genius you are.

Fuck this guy. Dude makes Super Mario World with the PoP time reversal mechanic and suddenly he's a top designer?

That is so embarrassing. Man, if I made that mistake I would want to crawl into a hole for a few days until everyone forgot.

Being an adult and all he probably doesn't give any fucks about what people who don't even know him think of him.

The guy is a genius, he can say what he likes in my eyes, still nothing but respect for him. He gave us Braid for Christ's sake.

So he's saying he'll take it off the 360 Marketplace because he's mad and it sells better on Steam? I'm pretty sure 9/10 people bought it on PC when it was on sale for like a buck.

So he said something dumb on twitter. Big deal.
The reactions in this thread seem a little disproportionate, to say the least.

Why don't you read the contract?

What's with all the hate?

People like this dude for singlehandidly fixed MS indie-policies to a huge extent, by airing out their troubles. :)
If these sucesfull indies hadn't compained about their experience/treatment before, Sony/Nintendo wouldn't have known what MS did wrong, and provide a better service, then MS would never get a incentive to fix their policies..

I saw alot of threads were people were bragging of MS and XBLA last generation, just because Fez/Braid/etc. turned out sucesfull.
If MS had informed him on e-mail, this wouldn't have been a twitter-issue.. :-/

Not sure if rage is the right word, but it did sound like he threatened to pull the entire game off XBLA. That came off as rather emotional

Right, so a dev being "rather emotional" about his own game on Twitter justfies slagging him off, calling him a fucking idiot, etc?

No, him signing a contract and complaining when the other party executes the contract as they agreed upon is reason to call him an idiot...

Him bitching about a price change that happened four years ago is reason to call him an idiot...

Him noticing it after four years is reason to call him an idiot...

That he probably was notified when it happened, and/or gave permission and now bitching about it is a reason to call him an idiot...

Good thing we can see what happened on the internet forever and deleting tweets cant erase the rich tapestry and nuance of how this played out. This story will make for a great book series or movie trilogy that will be worth much more than any game will because I care more about the personalities of game developers than the actual games they produce.

There are a lot of assholes and people with enlarged egos in the industry. But that doesn't stop me from playing good games. It shouldn't stop you either.

People refusing to buy someone's game because of what that person may have said (that has no effect on the game's quality whatsoever) are being just as whiny, bitchy and unreasonable as the one they are "boycotting". What the fuck are standing up for? What are you fighting? Seriously. Faux outrage GAF is by far the most obnoxious part of our community. Just shut the hell up. Sure poke fun at him and make jokes, but there is no need to get pitch forks and be offended. Just stop.

Devs so mindlessly dumb shit all the time. Doesn't stop me from enjoying their work.

This is like some kind of werid social media version of someone bumping a thread only for them to be wrong and backfire or something.

I think you're missing one key point:

Refusal to buy a game because you encounter negative news about its developer is extremely unfair to small companies who don't interface to their customers through PR machines. PR isn't just "common sense." Any normal person who has a Twitter is going to put their foot in their mouth and frequently. Whether a journalist or GAFfer picks up on the story is completely out of their hands so silence is the best strategy for an individual without a PR team, as Fish has resorted to.

PS: Go read the Twitter or Facebook of any major company. It sucks. Do you really want them to talk like that?

No I totally understand, that's just my viewpoint on it. To be fair I also don't go out of my way to expose myself to things like this so for the most part I remain oblivious to it so it's mainly based upon the things I catch from the places I do frequent like GAF.

If anything I expect most people to have the opposite view on this than me I guess.

Yeah, I think this is a pretty accurate analogy. :D

Of course some people will use the opportunity to take some potshots at Blow so it'll take a couple more days for this to be forgotten compared to a random poster on GAF getting mocked for the mistake, but eh.

The moral is: use Twitter at your own risk, people will see what you write.

Blow thinks he is the knight in shining armor chasing after the evil corporation, but it turns out, he is the one being the dick. How fitting.

No idea how this thread is nine pages. It's not like the guy went on some bridge-burning tirade full of obscenity and name-calling. The dude made a small mistake and then owned up to it. Big deal.

To be fair, at this point the people recognising that it was a small mistake and not a big deal outnumber the people taking potshots in the thread, so there's that. :p
