Jonathan Blow: Games might be 60fps on PS4, 30fps on Xbox One

Are we really making that kind of thread based on that kind of tweet now? And to say what, that sometimes a version of a game runs better on one console than on another ? Big whoop, never seen that this gen.

I can't wait til the games actually release and that kind of stupid spec discussion dies.

I don't think his quote really means anything, what he casually says may happen isn't impossible but he's in no way trying to say that it's going to be universal.

It's just a comment that could come true in certain games.

Exactly.

Some of the best looking PS2 games were 60FPS.

God Of War, God Of War 2, Devil May Cry 3, Gran Turismo 4, Metal Gear Solid 2.
Funny you should mention MGS2, as that's exactly the kind of scenario I'm imagining: high off the power jump they make a bunch of games 60 FPS. In the twilight years though for their next iteration they lookt o see how much they can improve the graphical quality at the expense of FPS, and thus you get MGS3 (which definitely does look better and has bigger environments.)

But yeah, the rest of those games are late gen so it's definitely far from a guarantee, but I do think we're going to see situations like MGS2 to 3.

Platinum Games will aim for 60fps at least on PS4. Cod will run at 60fps on one platform as well. Every serious Fighting Game will be. Stating there will be no 60fps games on consoles is stupid.

he looks like a fanboy. Some of the things he says make sense, but it looks like he's just pushing PS4 because his game is there.

bro, you went from...

More like 30 on PS4 and 24 on BONE, because you ain't going to see 60fps games on a console.

ok, no games at 60fps...

Yeah, the thing is the title suggests 30 vs 60 will be a widespread phenomenon, but AAA 60 fps games are going to be maybe 1-3/year (COD included).

ok, no AAA games at 60fps...

Right, you are missing context. Indies and fighting games are going to be 60fps (should they want) on both platforms because they are not THAT demanding.

The title, to which my post responds, suggests (to me at the very least) a 30 vs 60 scenario for demanding AAA games. Because if a game isn't demanding, guess what, you are not going to see such a *HUGE* difference in framerate.

ok, no demanding AAA games at 60fps...

where's the goal post moving next? demanding AAA games that feature purple aliens?

his point is well known - screenshots and trailers sell games, and neither of them need 60fps. Devs of flagships, the kinds of games that people argue about graphical quality and system power, trade-off framerate for higher IQ, and always will. COD has always been an outlier.

I think MS is betting on real world vrs theoretical performance.
As many of the additions MS made to the system were designed to keep data fed to the GPU and prevent stalls. they have done lots of research regarding how much of a GPU actually is utilized and how much time it's sitting idle.

I'm guessing this would likely make up much of the difference between GPU's and make things more of a wash.

Except the additions Microsoft made to their SoC are deliberate attempts to compensate for the bottleneck of their comparatively slow system RAM. Sony doesn't need those things because they don't have that bottleneck.

i doubt it, but considering they have similar architecture ps4 version of MP games may be one step further on fps/lighting/effects/textures. Just like different settings on PC games, PS4 would one or two above Xone settings.

I'm not moving the goal posts sir.

It's like me telling you that you ain't going to see 4K games on consoles (truth!) and a random ass 2D indie title runs @4K along with a PS2 remaster and you are like "see? seee? you were wrong!"

*_* No, not really.

The TV switching and background functions shown for XBone will take up some amout of power away from the games, to say nothing of the ram differences between the machines.

I don't think it will be as drastic as Blow mentions, but there will surely be some games with performance differences.
