Joss Whedon is interested in directing a Star Wars film

Congratulations. You just filled my head with an Amazing Idea that I don't think I'll ever be able to stop thinking about until it happens.

I've been nattering on this past week about the *need* for this to happen.

I wouldn't want Whedon though. Never enjoyed his stuff.

I wouldnt mind him doing Episode 8 (I know the Looper guy is already on it).

The characters, personalities, situations and themes will already have been established by Abrams in Episode 7. I think Whedon would be good at taking what's already established and giving us a lot of fun character moments and action. His own "Empire Strikes Back."
Dont give him the last one, though. Let someone else close it off for Episode 9 (maybe Abrams again depending on how I like ep7).

Or if he were hired for an anthology movie, go for it. Maybe a Han Solo spinoff with Anthony Ingruber.

Yeah, clearly the JJ thing isn't working out. :p
I pretty much cannot stand anything he's ever done or been involved with, so, yeah. Not remotely hyped even though I enjoy the original SW trilogy. It most probably won't be as bad as the prequels (that'd be hard to accomplish), but I have zero trust in this hack. Whereas Joss Whedon has done some really good stuff, at least.

That's fine. I think he's a great director an visionary that has unfortunately surrounded himself with folks like Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci in the past. You call him a "hack" but I feel like that's a term that is easily just tossed about by cynics without weighing any actual variables. As a director I think he's always been very good, but he's been given some less than satisfactory scripts to work with, which is why I'm not worried about Star Wars as the script was joint effort between Abrams and Kasdan and the clowns that have surrounded him in the past are nowhere to be seen.

Luke: I saw - I saw a city in the clouds.

Yoda: Friends you have there.

Luke: They were in pain...

Yoda: It is the future you see.

Luke: Will they die?

Yoda: Difficult to see. Always in motion is the future.

Luke: The proper method of judging when or whether one should help another person is by reference to one’s own rational self-interest and one’s own hierarchy of values: the time, money or effort one gives or the risk one takes should be proportionate to the value of the person in relation to one’s own happiness.

Yoda: the fuck just said you?

Luke: The man who enslaves himself voluntarily in the name of love is the basest of creatures. He degrades the dignity of man, and he degrades the conception of love. But that is the essence of altruism.

Yoda: dumb it down to a muppet you will

Luke: They can go eat a dick and die.
Fucking LOL

I actually like Ayn Rand

This will be cheaper than bankrolling the next FireFly film Whedon .

Then again i thought he was dead set on doing his own thing for his next film .

LMAO, I've never read Rand but that sure reads like a Terry Goodkind piece to a T. No wonder people say he wrote Rand worship.

Id like to see him do a 12 ep Netflix series
Now i am just gonna be sad because this will never happen.

I would be much, much, much, much more interested in Whedon doing short tight (12-13 episode) seasons of Star Wars stuff. Can you imagine him doing a Bounty Hunter show?

Please don't happen, please don't happen, please don't happen.

It'll happen. :(
Yeah, don't let a highly talented writer who does excellent character writing do a character driven movie. A writer who has proven he can do sci-fi well.

Never understood the hatred people have towards Whedon. I can understand getting sick of the high praise he gets but to deny his talent is absolutely silly.

Agreed. In a world in which David Goyer continues to get paying work as a screenwriter, the idea that Whedon is someone to complain about is insane.

Also, we're getting a new Star Wars film every year. Forever. Throw as many different talents at those movies as are willing to do them. Take risks, change things up, tell unexpected stories alongside the Episodes. It's okay if you don't end up liking them all, because another one will be along shortly.

Lmao you motherfuckers are making it seem like starwars is some holy grail for writing and directing.

Fuck man if Lucas can do it anyone can.

1. I actually trust Whedon like do Abrams. There's a certain type of nerd that knows how to capture the essence of what they love without overstepping their boundaries. So many directors who aren't fans, or know nothing about a certain franchise, yet are put to head a reboot or revival of said franchise only to miss the mark. Say what you will about Whedon's quips, his take on making a Marvel comic super hero team, The Avengers, into a blockbuster movie is more respectful than anything Michael Bay, among others, have done with whatever franchises they shit over.

2. Does anybody really think Whedon's gonna write a SW movie the and get full reins over how the story's going to be? Remember, SW has a story committee that steers the continuity in whatever direction THEY see fit. I doubt they'd let Whedon go crazy, if that was the case(even though I think he'd be more respectful towards the franchise, and be more aiming to capture the similar "past glory" of the OT similarly to Abrams).

Yeah, it's been a weird thread.

Also, I recently watched his attempt at Shakespeare, Much Ado About Nothing, and thought it was very enjoyable, so there's that.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm getting sick of the Whedon style of writing/directing.

Seems that every one of his movies/shows follows that "look at how screwed we all are, let's say something witty, then go fight some, get beat up, make another joke, then somehow win the day."

From what I can tell others have said the weakest thing about Avengers: AoU is the Whedon-style. So, no. I would rather he didn't do a Star Wars film.

Hmm.

What's the most vicious / actually threatening character Joss has worked with? That's what'd sway me.

Need some genuine threats up in here.

How about a Firefly-like adventure in Star Wars universe pre-EP4?

Some jaded ex-soldier eking a living out of scavenging TIE Fighter parts and smuggling Adegan crystals.

I really think they've hit their quota on pre-E4 stuff, honestly. Move on.

I wish I lived in your world, a world where Dollhouse doesn't exist.
Dollhouse was pretty cool. It didn't live up to its full potential due to the cancellation and took a bit too long to get really going, but even despite those flaws it's certainly better than anything JJ has ever been involved with.

Everything he's done not called Cabin in the woods is awful.
Did you just call Firefly awful

I can't

He can do the TV show about smugglers.
