Judgement Day: Too Human Demo Up Now!

On second playthrough, I'm liking it a lot more. Once you accept that the game for what it is (a loot game) it become quite enjoyable IMO.

Well, left the demo downloading at 5AM..went to sleep..woke up, ate some breakfast, read some E3 impressions..and then proceeded to play the demo.

Overall, I can't say I'm dissapointed..since is not like my expectations were high or anything, in this whole Too Human/Dyack/Unreal/GAF debacle I usually stood in a neutral position, more of a "Wait and see" approach..

But the demo, was..just..nothing special.
The visuals were usually average, there were some nice effects..sometimes..but that was it. Character design ranged from average (looks it's..a robot!!), to just clones (same soldiers copy/pasted all over the place). Music was really nice though, really liked it..combat was just..lame...and sometimes not responsive, and the story seems like tacked-on, full of clichés like "Hey, Odin..we're talking about Odin..and angels ..we know so much about mithology"..

Overall, may get the game at some point..but I'm in no rush to get it soon.

Wat's going on here? Shane pronounced this game to be the next PSO grind after a positive playtest.

Was the ManGod spitting filthy lies?

i only can equip weapons and armor...how about those health orbs... are those potions total automatical?? hoe does that work exactly?

Pretty much the exact same thing I was going to post.

On my second playthrough, I was much more comfortable with the controls and was actually taking the time to use my skill points and equipping loot I was gathering.

Oh this is just a perfect picture.

Thats why he's the ManHo now... Garnett is Mangod.

I've been one of those that have been pretty down on the game, but here are my impressions. I've never played an SK game before, but I am experienced with Diablo and PSO.

I liked the demo more than I thought I would. I commented a bit in the "whole animation fiasco thread", and some of the animation is pretty poor. Baldur and NPCs glide on steps like the old days and take 4 steps at a time. But, the combat animation looks great and Baldur fights as badass as Kratos to me. I also like the large-scale feeling of the environments. Also on the graphical side, pretty much everyone of the character and enemy models with the exception of Baldur look poor to me. Lowlights include the old woman in the forest, the woman with modern day school-girl glasses you see in every porno, and the old guy with Matrix-code sunglasses. The camera is also pretty bad, but since the combat is a bit of a masher it doesn't affect the game too much. On the sound side, I found the NPC banter incredibly annoying, and the music seems a little over-the-top for the kind of game I want to zone out to.

But I do realize what Dyack was saying about how I wanted know til I played the demo of how it plays, and the game really is just a Diablo/PSO/Guantlet game. Since this subgenre has never been known for its strong visuals, I can look past the game's faults in these areas. More importantly for this kind of game, I am feeling the addictiveness in the repetitiveness and the desire to collect. So, the game mechanics are solid in that same way Diablo is so it'll probably still be fun after tens of hours in whatever the environments.

I do want to add though that I think this game would be much better served on the PC for a number of reasons. Not only would the interface be superior (and I don't think the stick is adding to much to the combat, I'm pretty much just "clicking" it around) but also so I could watch TV or do something else while I'm playing.

Liked the demo.

Things that surprised me:
The graphics. Pretty stunning game thanks in part to the visual aesthetic.

The combat. For a game where you just "hold down sticks" shit gets pretty difficult. I found I had to vary stuff up a lot, including using my ranged weapon quite a bit despite picking the melee beserker class.

I went into the game with low expectations. It's not a broken game, and there is some good stuff in it. I can see how it would be enjoyable, and I think I would have enjoyed it more with a better camera, and by that I mean a top down one. The angles the camera sometimes went to were very annoying.

The other problem is that the game has one of the worst menus I've ever had the displeasure to meet. It is jarring and jumpy. It moves so jerkily that it gave me a headache.

All in all, with some different choices, I would buy this game, but as it stands, I'm satisfied with just the demo. I think it deserves about an 8. 6-9 depending upon how much the game annoys you seems fair, but I think it should end up an 8.

Well, maybe if you have that spider that is catching the missiles for you...otherwise for me i cannot play this game and also watch TV....

I liked the demo

Combat was better than expected and I really like the setting.

I just hope the game has some real depth as my only worry is that the game is over before it begins (as one preview said...)

If it is a substantial quest I will buy this

The game just feels so cheap and unfinished. From the awful animations and the mindless combat system to the horrendous HUD and menu interface, this is nowhere near ready for release.

-1 sale for sure.

Having read negative comments all day and not really have a pre-defined opinion on Too Human (ie. I didn't have hopes that it would be godly or anything), I really didn't expect anything from the demo.

But color me surprised. It actually required me to play it to really understand the mechanics. Compare it to Diablo, which is should be compared to, I think the right stick method is a really neat substitute to the mouse. In general, I think the combat worked well...

The cinematic storytelling also worked really well and seemed quite immersive and interactive.

It's difficult to judge the game based on this demo though. It could go either way. Either it becomes repetitive and trivial, because the loot becomes uninteresting, the enemies doesn't vary and evolve enough and the story is lackluster. Or it hooks me, because the loot becomes even more awesome by the minute, the enemies cooler and the story becomes epic.

So far, so good... my two cents

I don't really like these kinds of games, not even Diablo, so obviously I'm not the target audience, but I'll give my thoughts anyway.

This game reminds me of that Conan game that came out last year I think, not the mmo but the action game, in that everything about it just feels like it was made by a B team. The voice acting, animations, graphics, even just moving around feels like it's stuck between last gen and current gen if that makes any sense. Like I might have been impressed with this 4 years ago. Perhaps it's a product of how long this has taken to finally come out.

I don't know what to say about the combat other than to me it's just about as boring as clicking something until it dies. The right stick fighting just feels weird and doesn't really bring anything new to the table. Using buttons for attacks would have been better I think. Even a very basic system compared to DMC or NG would have been great and worked well.

i think we'll be seeing this a few times in the days to come.

i wanted to download, but i'm a lowly silver person. :(

Not my cup of tea.

-Do not like the technicality of the graphics for a 360 game, though its not that bad
-Do not like the combat with the right stick
-Animations are just,...no
-Music is very nice and atmospheric
-Never was a camera hater so I dont have a problem with hitting the trigger to recenter.
-Story was forgettable for me, they are never really a big draw for me in games anyway.

I dont spend $60 on a lot of games and this didnt make me want to.

i knew i shouldn't have posted that one :lol

If anyone is interested, here's a 720p video (Click on download now to get it, the streaming version is probably ready when i post this) http://files.filefront.com/Too+Human+gameplaymp4/;11064772;/fileinfo.html. I'm sorry if I didn't make justice to the game, I didn't get too much into the skills customization/equipment, maybe you could be able to pull off some other moves.

Since I only have silver and can't download the demo I'll comment on the footage:

The animations are horrible, they're not "ok", they're crap, I COULD say it's PS2 era but it really isn't since games like DMC and God of War have WAY better combat animations, heck Vagrant Story back on the PS1 had better combat moves.

The combat seems frustrating, sliding from enemy to enemy doing two hits, enemies don't seem to react to hits consistently, they just flop away, no distinct moves prompting distinct enemy reaction.

Why is the corridor so huge? Does it have to be so huge? The effective combat area doesn't need to be that huge anyway, there's nothing special going on in that environment, it's totally drab.

I would like to know what the objective of the scenario in the demo is, outside of beating a bunch of robots and some really simple mini-bosses, the one in the demo which is a big robot with a giant hammer.

I don't like this game much either. I loved Eternal Darkness and I was looking forward to this game for quite some time. However after playing the demo, its meh. The camera gets some getting used to and I don't really like the melee combat. The graphics are really nice, but the animations are horrible which really takes you out of the experience. The story looks meh as well.

I am not feeling this game as well. I may try it out when it hits the bargain bin.

Just completed it again in an hour and thirty minutes. Completed a full set of the dragon armor, mounted both trolls, and beat the challenge arena. This time I spec'd in the aerial combat rather than the flame attacks, and it was ridiculously better. Using a hammer to knock four or five enemies into the air and then hammer away at them with air combat was pretty darn sweet. Reached a max combo of over 100 and combo level of 3 (had to use a ruiner in the challenge arena).

Needless to say, really enjoying it.

Does anyone know what you're supposed to do once you mount one of those troll things? I get up on them and my guy just pulls some gold medal vaulting shit off of them.

Keep in mind that I played this on a SDTV and have always been supportive of this game...

With that being said, I thought the demo was very good.

Graphics wise, the game was just good. Not breathtaking, but no noticeable framerate drops during gameplay. While there was some stuttering in the menus and cutscenes, I can live with that if it means no loading. I also thought the art direction was very good. My only complaint was with the beserker (??) dudes (the ones with the axes). They look like they should be in the WWE instead of a game based around ancient Norse Mythology.

The musical score in this game ROCKS. I also thought the sound effects were extremely good.

The combat really surprised me. While I don't think it will be incredibly deep at high levels, I had a blast zerging through the first groups of enemies. It was tough adapting to the right stick combat at first, but when you stop fighting with the controls, everything comes together. The camera during combat really did not frustrate me at all (played mostly in the strategic and isometric views) and with the combat being so frenetic, I forgot about it completely. Only when exploring did the camera really get on my nerves despite the option to hold the RB and stick to free look. This is a game that will allow casual players to feel like a badass and tank through the game while at the same time rewarding skilled players for effectively using all the skills at their disposal. After two playthroughs, I still struggled with the air combat.

I liked the presentation quite a bit, especially the flashbacks which is a different spin on storytelling this generation. While I thought some of the facial animations were rough, the voice acting, in my opinion, was solid. In terms of the dialogue, some was cheesy, but definitely no cheesier than anything from Mass Effect, Halo, or Gears. In fact, one of the lines being criticized here by some "It's a good day to die" was what seemed to me sarcasm by SK.

Loot system was obviously stellar. Don't need to go into this.

Biggest complaints....1. Camera system when not in combat
2. Invisible Walls
3. AI partners
4. Some of the characters art design

Does anyone know what you're supposed to do once you mount one of those troll things? I get up on them and my guy just pulls some gold medal vaulting shit off of them

You gotta take smack him around a little than go behind the troll; mount with A; then balance with the joysticks back in forth until it kind of stabilizes, allowing you to flick the sticks forward and kill the troll.

wow, I've been looking forward to this game for so long.

ok, it's interesting so far.. I wish the controls would reset when I centered the camera though so it doesnt feel like resident evil of crap. bleh. it's ok now, I'm just wishing I had my HDTV with me right now. Bah!

I'm loving it, but then again I probably knew what I was getting into far more than the average GAFer. The combat is compelling, the story even at this early stage is quite nuanced and well-written (save for some of the generic trooper lines, but since those contrast so much with the more 'serious' dialogue in tone I think they should be taken quite obviously as tongue-in-cheek), the cutscenes are well done--I enjoy the realist style with a slight veneer of flash, and the looting and skill setting is keeping me firmly glued to the game.

Of course it is not perfect, some of the visuals are lacking in certain areas (namely cyberspace) but otherwise it has lived up to my expectations.

DL'ed demo.
It was interesting. Had fun for the time I was playing it and not sitting through the story I didnt really care about lol. At the end of the demo I wanted to play more lol but oh well.
The camera was killing me, not much you can do since 2nd stick is weapons but i hated that camera lol. The characters looked laughable too, seeing some of the people with hair just made me wish everyone was bald :/ My other complaint is that for a loot whore game...it takes too long (loading menus etc) to check/change your equipment :/

Other than that I enjoyed it, might check/rent it out when its available.

ok... i played the demo and honestly i like the game for it's atmosphere, art direction, and even the litte tidbit of the storyline left me wanting more... but if this is a sneak peak of the gameplay... i doubt i would want to play the game again after the first playthough... or even bother to finish.

here are my issues with the game so far:

- broken camera: free look system doesnt give you a first person view and you cant really pan the camera, and in combat it can work against you... ninja gaiden 2 had a better camera and that game made sure you got ambushed.

- melee system: doesnt feel fluid at all considering it's mapped to the control stick, there's no actual combos, lacks a certain "feel" to the game that makes it seem like your attacks are effective (unless your using your guns). In the end... this could have been easily mapped to one button and be more effective.

- framerate: this game would be far better if the framerate was stable and aimed for 60fps like DMC and NG2... because of it's weak freamrate... the game feels clunky and broken most of the time. everything from the combat to the cut scenes is hurt by this and i hope the final product address it.

- Menu: by far the most broken part of this demo is the actual menu... it moves so slow and there is a delay on selections. I've never been a fan of real time elements in menus because it slows down the process of selecting what you want (army of two comes to mind) using static images with the option of previewing it in real time would work better IMO.

...

and this is just nitpicking... but the font used does not go well with the design... i can tolerate arial being heavily used in xbox live arcade titles... but not with a full retail game.

I was a little disappointed by the demo. The graphics are fairly impressive, but the combat feels somewhat unresponsive and lifeless, which could be partially due to the awful, awful control scheme. The camera could really use some work as well; I keep trying to move it around with the right analog stick, and snapping the camera back to center with the left bumper is really jarring and awkward. I'll spend some more time with it, but I think my purchase has been downgraded to a GameFly rental. We'll see.

Also, the menus seem a bit sluggish for a game that emphasizes tinkering with gear and character builds.

It's fucking annoying how they keep teasing and building up the E3 coverage THAT IS ACTUALLY GOING ON ALREADY. and then there's this unfunny motion capture bullshit...

Get to the dyack already!

I try not to get wrapped up in the far-too-common GAF Hyperbole waves. So I just played the demo, and I don't know what to think. First off I guess I'll start with the stuff I like.

I like the setting/art style quite a bit. That's definitely a positive for me. The music is fantastic. Also the combat seems simple and hard hitting enough to allow an hour of stick-mashing here and there.

But the bad far seems to outweigh the good, though maybe I'm being nitpicky some of the times. The graphics are far from excellent, and seem really shimmery and like they're trying to do too much with the engine. As it's just a "smash wave after wave of enemy" kinda game I don't need super gorgeous graphics, but it just feels like they could've done a lot more, especially because you basically have yourself then a bunch of the same dude on screen. Only playing for like 20 minutes the combat seems like it isn't very deep and I don't know if "tilt the stick in the direction you want to hit" leaves much room for combos or whatever. Sure it's fun to just twist the stick around and kick ass, but it's much more satisfying if you have to work for that. The HUD is AWFUL and gaudy, and the fonts used are mostly boring.

The worst part to me, so far, though, was the awful dialogue. It feels like a bad D&D game at times. I laughed out loud at the guy saying "I'll buy you all the mead you can drink if we get out of this!" The first little story sequence was terrible. "I need an expedition unit!" "But we don't do that any more." "C'mon just one?" "Fine have a small one." It's like a 4 year old asking his mom for a candy bar or something. This felt like it was Lost Planet level bad story and execution. Epic trilogy indeed.

Maybe I'll pick it up for $20.

Played through it and it's surprisingly fun, but the thing is: Not as much fun as it could be because of some bad gameplay decisions SK made:

  • The camera sucks most of the time and doesn't really add that much immersion to the game. The second troll killed me once because the camera was positioned behind the troll and since I was standing on a stairway the LB did exactly nothing. Getting killed because of the camera is...well...a solid reason the hate the game.

  • Some animations in the first two or three cutscenes were so bad that I skipped the following ones. Denis, if you're reading this (and I'm pretty sure you do) please keep in mind that I'm not a troll and I really like the demo to some degree, but THE ANIMATION SUCK.

  • The menu loads to slow and that destroys to pace of the game. The inventory and the skill menu should be ingame and not in the traditional pause menu.

  • Using the right stick to attack is fun for like 10 seconds but then it gets really annoying due to the fact that it's so uncomfortable to click in different directions instead of mashing a button.

I played it.

I liked it.

I hated the camera.

This game, exactly as it is, only played from the Diablo/BG:DA/Champions of Norrath camera would be pure win.
