Just Cause 2 Demo Impressions - 360/PS3/PC

Yep.

Also, you guys do know you can grapple to the tops of propane tanks, shoot them, then blast off like a rocket, right?

...but be careful.

By the way, not sure if this has been mentioned, but if anyone is looking for the armored tank with rockets/machine gun, it's located in a small base, top right corner (around the river inlet) of the demo map. Thing is fucking unstoppable. Here are the official coordinates:

X: 7522m
Y: 23783m

Somewhere in there. Enjoy that bitch!

Edit: Aha.. I may have to see if I can grab that and make a novel attempt at the faction mission.

Off to do it now, one way or another. I keep getting distracted and having like 5 minutes left before the demo kicks me out when I start the mission.

Played the PS3 demo. Great visuals, smooth. Grapple gameplay feels like an odd version of Bionic Commando. I love the driving gameplay and how the cars are damaged.

I don't know if it's the demo, but the level design looks so confusing: I don't know what I have to do in addition to shoot everything with a white star on it. I don't know where I have to go. VA in Spanish is really bad.

Parachute is really cool, but the places to use it aren't really well placed, or looks like you can only fly a really short distance. I would like to have longer flight distances.

Same here, I just shoot shit and mess around. I'm sure in the final version you will get more obvious objectives but I am SO lost when it comes to black market and upgrades and actual missions although I did (accidentally) fall into some underground missile silo/base and ended up sabotaging it and having to escape before the whole place blew.

Now THAT was fun and it wasn't even a proper mission, I don't think.

Even more fun is yanking a pedestrian off a moving motorcycle.:lol

I like hooking a top of light pole...then the soldiers...and watching them hang, before shooting them...and then watching them to hang some more.

or you can do it to the civilians that are sitting down...its pretty funny how one second they're minding their own business, then BAM hanging from a light pole.

also its funny when the soldiers try to unhook the cable.

Once you get over 4000 on your chaos meter, an actual mission marker appears on your PDAs map. Go there and accept the faction mission and youll get to see what the single player game is like.

Its pretty standard fare with icons and arrows appearing on screen to point out exactly what you need to do and where you need to go. The mission itself is cool too.

Well, I found the source of my middling performance. The Nvidia exclusive effects absolutely destroy performance, despite only benefiting image quality in specific circumstances. My performance is excellent now, pretty much locked at a constant 50fps. The highest shadow setting is probably best left for the 5870s and GTX 480s of this world as well. Medium + "high res shadows" produces some very nice results, anyway.

Played PC version. M&K were fine except for when you're driving vehicles, then is sucks.

Loved the demo, this game is just pure fun!

Hey, I thought you didn't like it as a game?

The performance of a game can have a huge impact on one's enjoyment. The issue was bugging the shit out of me, as was the horrendous shooting with a 360 controller. Switching to the mouse and keyboard for shooting sections and getting a perfect 50fps completely changes the game, its a totally different experience. Shooting with the keyboard and mouse is very satisfying, it gets rid of the ridiculous amounts of auto aim and I can zoom in and pull off headshots as easy as pie. Turns one of the worst parts of the game into one of the best and I can still pick up my controller for navigating the environment and using vehicles.

Use a pad for vehicles and m&kb for shooting its the perfect combination and the game auto configures for both of them on the fly. Its the only way to play the game imo, its just such a better solution to using only one device, which each have inerrant control issues.

I hate having 90% of a settlement complete and not knowing where one or two objects are. Pretty solid otherwise!

Keep in mind the indicator on the top left of the screen that shows how close to any nearby upgrade kits you are.

That's actually fascinating and I hadn't even considered touching the mouse and keyboard for this one. I think I'll give that a shot, I'm diving in to finally do the faction mission now. :D

Game looks and plays amazing on the 360. The engine is incredibly slick.

The game world seems gigantic.

Game seems like it can really go nowhere fast though. Has the GTA effect of having fun doing stupid shit and then not having a clear direction to go next.

The main character also seems horribly generic.

Played it for a few more hours today.

Highlight was crippling a radio tower. Killed guards, shot the first support line, jumped in a helicopter, rode to top, accidentally clipped second support line with helicopter blade, jumped out and grapple-hooked the collapsing tower and rode that fucker halfway down a mountain.

They've got it setup just perfectly. The controls, icons, auto-aim, sensitivity, the whole shebang change instantly the moment you touch the keyboard. Jump in a vehicle and pick up your 360 controller again and it'll control just as it did before, I really wish more games worked like this, it can be incredibly liberating.

I think genral movement works better on a pad, but when it comes to firefights there's no contest. Shooting felt simply horrible on a pad to me, but it works excellently with the kb&m and I'm pulling off headshots and zooming my reticule in and out like nobody's business. I recommend anyone playing the PC version give it a go.

I am completely serious. I'm getting screwed over two features, a game one and a visual one, for absolutely no good reason at all.
.

You really wouldn't want to be using those Nvidia exclusive effects anyway. All they're good for is tanking performance. The effects use CUDA, the only other alternative would have been DX11's compute shader and that would have meant a tighter schedule, more work and even fewer people having access to them features. Oh, and you still wouldn't have been able to use them without investing in new hardware.

Its a none issue.

I just tried out the PC demo and it is a lot of fun. I am running a Core 2 Duo E8500 at 3.8ghz, 4GB of RAM and a Radeon 5870 and with all settings maxed out at 1920x1200 resolution (except Anti-Aliasing which was at 4x) I consistently got 60fps or more with vsync turned off. The game is a ton of fun and I played through the demo twice just messing around.

I am still debating whether or not to pick up the final game because the missions seem like they might not be very interesting. If the story missions just consist of blowing up random military bases then I might be fine just messing around with the demo until the game gets a Steam sale or something.

Did you do the mission? This one, at least, doesn't involve any blowing up of anything, though I imagine there will be plenty of that for sure.

I came SO CLOSE to beating it before the timer ran out this time. The 10...9...8... countdown was heartbreaking :lol

I went and grabbed that tank at the northern base based on the comments above. Holy crap, it's great. It's called the Razorback I believe. So satisfying to blow shit up with. I tried to take it back to the faction mission to use for it, but I got too much heat and it was destroyed on the way. Still so much fun taking out jeeps and motorcycles while it lasted. And how did I not realize you can knock down palm trees and lamp posts until 5 playthroughs of this thing? Amazing.

The way that you can set waypoints for yourself is absolutely perfect. All sandbox games need this feature. It gives you as many visual cues as possible, including arrows on the ground if you're on foot or in a vehicle. Seriously, perfect.

I am gonna have to get this one. Probably just end up going for the $44.99 on Steam. I know I can make $45 of my own fun in this world, and I wouldn't mind supporting them with a nearly full purchase so that Just Cause 3 can be the most mindblowing sandbox game ever conceived. All I ask is that somehow, eventually, all of the damn preorder bonus crap be made available on Steam. I want that freaking hovercraft.

Really the only question left is... how am I supposed to have time to play this with God of War 3 coming out this month too? I haven't even started Darksiders :lol

Go around and blow some stuff up until it says you have a new mission. Go to that mission and you'll get a sample of what directed missions are like. It's definitely not random killing spree stuff.

It's like they took everything good from GTA:SA, multiplied it, added more, and then gave you ice cream with little bits of oreo cookies in it. Fastest off my radar to first day ever :D

This is what I think will help the game sell. If someone gets their hands on it for five minutes, it definitely has that "okay PLAY THE CRAP OUT OF ME" feeling that GTAIII+ did.

The only thing I wish they would do is let me move with the controller and aim with the mouse at the same time.

So, what setting you recommend? The game looks fun, but for some reason, it gives me headaches...

Medium shadows + high res. shadows
Object detail at medium/high
Resolution/AA/AF as high as you want
Everything else on apart from GPU water, point specular, bokeh filter and SSAO.

That'll still deliver visuals pretty far in excess of the console version, and anything above that is going to net you diminishing returns imo. Performance should be excellent.

Thanks. Perfomance is much better now, in the 50s and 40s in the cutscenes. Up from 20s...

This demo is really fun. Never played the first one so this is a new experience. I played all 3 versions already and they are all pretty good. PC version stands out somewhat but this is a given. PS3 and 360 versions are decent too.

One thing I would recommend is disabling vsync unless you have a monster rig. Running at 1080P on my PC with my stuff high (except Nvidia exclusive performance killer settings) on my gtx 260, I get well over 60 fps many times and then dips into the 50s. The thing with vsync is if the game drops under 60 fps, it goes down to 30. Creates some nasty slowdown. With it off I don't see any noticeable tearing and it all runs well. I suppose I could probably go into the ini and adjust min frame rate but haven't looked that up yet.

Amazon has this one with a 15 dollar gc. Honestly that is tempting considering this is also a steamworks title.

No need to make that compromise:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=16452139

Works for basically all DirectX games and gets rid of those sudden drops you're experiencing without introducing tearing.

eerrr don't hate multiplatform developers for actually using platform-specific features (especially these PS3 ones basically no one knows about/not even first party developers use them).
Sony implemented the videorecording & youtube-uploading into the SDK, this is (kinda) like complaining only the 360 version having cross-game-voice-chat.

Though the last-30-seconds-feature is actually new (don't know if this is due to an updated SDK), makes the PS3 videorecording feature even more useful and all games should have it (if resources are available, maybe include an extra mode etc.)

One thing that I'm getting from these posts: this game scales with SLI extremely well; maybe the best in its class of games I've played.

Yeah, saw that too, but I have another fix that worked for me without disabling vsync.
Just change the amount of AA aplied (from 4x to 2x, 8x to 4x, 2x to 4x, etc) without quitting the game, and the strange slowdown that makes it dip to 30 FPS sometimes is gone.

That's not a fix.

The behaviour you're experiencing is supposed to happen, all games that use double buffer vsync will perform like that when they drop frames. The solution is triple buffer vsync, as I previously mentioned.

I got drunk after coming home from work and it looks like I've pre-ordered Just Cause 2 on Steam. :lol Oh well. I was probably going to buy it anyway.

Nah it ain't. Blow up enough shit they'll call in air support and a squad of paratroopers will bazooka the crap out of ya'.:lol

Funny enough They never called in air support - Perhaps it's because I destroyed the big antenna at the top of the mountain first? Either way, it lasted me a good 10-15, but in the end it blew up from infantry fire. It's quite good to wreak havoc with however.

jesus dude. All they did for the PS3 version was to use sony's youtube firmware used in the PS3 version. It is the only reason why PS3 has the youtube recording, they didnt go extra miles to implement it just for PS3.

When you kill a colonel they send helicopters after you. So much fun jumping from chopter to chopter until you take them all out. :lol

Hoooly smokes, found the tank and shred ass 'till it gave out. After that, it was an all out race to survive an endless wave of helis and soldiers. At one point, I ditched a flaming copter on the runway of the plane and jumped on it, only for it to get shredded in a hail of fire as a heli made a strafing run. I hauled ass out of there with a barely working plane that took off nearly upside down. With the heli still blasting away, I pitched upward and dived out of the busted plane and was free falling with two helis tearing through my parachute. After all this, I ended up on a quad with no ammo and drifted near the starter town, grabbed the grenade launcher, and nuked heli before finally biting the dust.

Day fucking one.

spidye said:
what? there is a tank?
and there just 4 helicopters in the demo, right?

In the upper most right, you'll see a small village near a body of water. The closest military camp to that (west-ish) has the tank parked in there. It's kinda hard to find, but it's there.

I think the camp is called Kem jalan or something like that

Demo was fun. If this game does not have an online component I'll pick it up for the 360 (I think the controls are more suited for the 360 pad).

I don't know why you guys are complaining about the perfomence but I'm getting rock solid 30fps (seems like its capped at this because of VSYNC?) with VSYNC turned on, everything maxed (SSAO on high, 2x AA, All nvidia filters on, AF max) at 720p on a Phenom 965 and heavily overclocked GTX 260. Its as smooth as you'd like.

Anyway, just played the faction mission where you have to break in and then chase the witness and holy shit. This game has gone from must buy to day one. The way they send the chopper in to get you out of there is just epic. And tieing guards to the propane tanks and then shooting the tanks never gets old.

Can't start the demo.

At the main screen, I press start then I want to press O to start the demo, but nothing happened.

My Japanese PS3 does not bother with O/X button to confirm but in this first time ever case: O isn't working (even if it's on scree " press O to start " and X does nothing. Start does not work.

How do I play the demo if O doesn't START IT ?!
