Just Cause 2 Demo Impressions - 360/PS3/PC

I'm glad you expressed that. I was pretty sure that you could do a bellyflop from 2 miles up in real life and not be injured but your post convinced me otherwise. I had the jet gased up and everything. You're a lifesaver.

Again, that's why I expressed it. Glad to be of humble insights.

Argh, can't access YouTube right now. Can someone explain how to do the time stop glitch (360 version) if it isn't too much trouble? Thanks!

When the demo timer comes up on screen and about to hit zero, hit the xbox button, this will automatically pause the game. Then cancel the guide and back to the game(which is now in pause menu. Continue the game and quickly(or mash)hit the xbox button again. Keep doing this over and over for about 10 secs.

If you die while in the time glitch I think demo's over.

Hah! I knew something like this would happen.

Haven't checked the thread, but my impressions went from Meh to Amehzing pretty quickly. This feels exactly like how I had dreamed Mercenaries 2 would have turned out. It was a bit longer wait, but it was worth it. Really looking forward to this now.

Dying must advance overworld time somewhat because I noticed the more times you die, the darker it can get post-sundown towards the 30 minute mark. Night skydiving looks eerie, then your helicopter plummets past you, alarms ringing, and its a race to the bottom!

This ranks up amongst Crackdown and Saints Row 2 with its batshit-crazy-fun factor.

GTAIV was great until Nico got a cell phone.

True, but I think the real issue with GTAIV was removing the ability to creatively solve missions. Not being able to pre-build a roadblock (or whatever) and forcing us to do what they wanted for the sake of the narrative sucked a lot of fun out of that game. Thankfully this seems to be the opposite, where fun is the priority over realism.

What's the driving like on the consoles? Are they as bad as they are on the PC? The delay between pressing the key and the car actually moving is infuriating beyond words.

The driving is great on the PS3. Arcadey without feeling too floaty.

I had fun, but I'm not sure if it was enough to justify a purchase. I got bored of Red Faction really quickly when a friend lent it to me late last year, and I can see the same happening here.

Holy shit. Doing the timer/boundary glitch really gives you a sense of scale. It's obvious from the size of the demo area and the map as a whole that the full world is freaking huge. But hopping in the plane and flying outside of the boundaries really lets it sink in. After 10 minutes of flying in one direction you figure you must be getting close to a corner of the map, and you look to realize you're not even %50 of the way there.

The scale of this thing is ridiculous. I know a shit-ton of it is auto-generated, but even then. If the rest of the world is even close to as densely populated as the demo area, fuck.

I'd never heard of this series last week, and now it's by far my most eagerly awaited title in years.

Edit: I found the blimps from the screenshot earlier. I thought it was pretty neat until I realized you can already see them on the map :lol Far east side of the map around X:29500, Y:11500.
Edit 2: I ran into another plane welloutside the demo area, in the islandly jungly area in the south east corner. Same make as the plane in the demo. I tried to follow it but my piloting skills are pretty terrible.
Edit 3 (someone reply dammit :lol): So the area must be a hotbed for planes because immediately after posting that I found another plane (different color). I hijacked it and it was being flown by one of the regular towns folk.

Is there any time-stopping glitch for the PC version?

I'm just using a small hack to change the timer to 24Hrs and remove the boundaries.

I don't know what the deal is for something like this but if you Google "just cause 2 PC somethingawful" the first link will tell you how to get the 24Hr timer.

Has anyone ever encountered any scorpions? I must have played the demo 10 times but I had never seen any, but just now encountered 2 outside the demo area. Though it's possible I never noticed them inside the demo area since there's so much more stuff to do.

I was starting to think I was alone in loving the driving until I realised all the complainers were PC peeps. On 360 the driving feels great - the bikes are precariously fast and slick and the few sports cars around the world handly brilliantly, almost as good as a racing game. A lot of my fun has come from stealing cars and going off-road - which reminds me that the cars damage awesomely too.

This game is definitely this year's Red Faction. Stupid brilliant sandbox fun.

I love it when a game you hype, and noone seems to be interested in, comes out and everyone is like "hot fucking kangaroo balls, this is amazing!" I humbly await the youtube uploads :D :D :D :lol

I'll have to dl the demo on my 360 and see what that's like. It probably is a lot better. The PC version certainly is functional, but you can tell this is a console game being played with a mouse and keyboard.

I dont see the point of going outside the demo area since geometry, AI are nonexistent etc.

I'll tell you this much.....I used to always like finding glitches like this in games.....but as these graphics get more real looking...it is starting to get eerie.

I was in this one section in the water, where cars were falling out of the sky one by one, into the water in front of me......and then there were people popping out of the water (apparently the drivers) and they were just treading water...

with all this weird stuff going on, coupled with the realistic back drop of half mountains and cut off terrain...with the nice looking water......yeah it was kind of weird after a while.....like being stuck in between different dimensions.

and I didn't even mention swimming deep down in this area of water to find a gravel type road on the sea floor.

This reminds me when I got an action replay for the Gamecube and gave my Animal Crossing character the ability to move directly upward and up onto the cliffs that sectioned off the town. Going into Acre ? was seriously freaky. I felt a strange combination of freight, guilt, and remorse. Never did it again.

what the

we need some gifs lol

I found that after I'd been out of bounds for a while and came back, there were a couple different types of cars driving around I'd never seen before, notably a few tractors and a whole bunch of pickup trucks. I also saw what looked like a big bus.

I know what you mean about it being eerie. If you look on the map there is grey areas that seem to represent bases or grounds where a building would be placed. If you go there there's no buildings obviously - there's just concrete ground instead of dirt groud, it would be waste of space to include these in the demo outside the allowed area. Instead in some sites there's a HUGE MOTHERF'N HOLE that goes really deep down, with stretched textures along the walls.

And yeah there's scorpions outside of the demo area on some roadside and desert sections, you can shoot them and they explode in blood.

Now I just can't wait for the full game. It sucks that the release is so close to GTA's EFLC release on PS3 and PC as I won't have time to play both, but this is probably the most fun I've had just messing about since GTA SA.

Yeah, there are several ways to extend to time limit and boundaries on the PC version if you know where to look. Sorry for not being helpful. This game is an instant purchase for me.. I love the huge/free open world. Does the actual game have more structure? Or is it just terrorize as much as you want and do the missions on your own time?

Has anyone been able to land a plane outside the demo area? I tried landing at the airstrip SE of the demo, but my plane exploded on impact. I dunno if I was coming in too fast, or if it was because there was no airport there, just dirt. Or maybe the collision is just messed up out there -- I flew my plane through some of the low-LOD buildings out there.

According to some guys on the JC2 forums, you can find a different, bigger plane outside the demo area, but it sounds like no one's been able to jack it yet.

It's a lot better than the original for sure, but something still feels a little off to me. Then again, I'm one of the wackos that likes GTA4's driving model, so maybe it's just my weird taste. I'm playing on the PC w/ 360 controller, but I assume it controls very similarly to the 360 version.

Haven't tried using mouse & keyboard yet, but I can see where that could cause some frustration -- keyboard steering in general kinda blows, from my experience.

The latter, I think. The original game was pretty free-form... there were more secondary missions like "take over X town" or "destroy Y military base", but those might have been replaced by the collect + destroy completion meter in each settlement in JC2.

Please tell me the full game isn't littered with timed missions and races.

That'd be the absolute quickest way to kill my hype for this game.

HA just did that trick to get past the demo limit.
So much more fun now :D

You can also reduce the opacity of the menus to 0 to get rid of the red message (and the map/health unfortunately).

Timed missions? Is the faction mission timed at all?

The faction mission isn't timed, other than the overall demo limit.

Trying to decide which SKU to choose. I read the PS3 has a steadier frame rate. Also, doesn't it get some ability to upload replays to youtube, where you can't do it on the 360?

I played the demo on both consoles, and I really don't like using the DS triggers to fire. But if the PS3 has way more functionality, I may have to go that route.

The control menu allows you to switch shooting/grenades to R1/L1

L2 becomes grapple. R2 becomes dodge.

Yeah I tried that out. I especially didn't like having to "tap" the triggers for grapple/dodge. Way too much throw on those things to be used as taps.

.

I find driving fine in the demo with M/Kb. The faster cars though are a bit tough to handle though.

If it's like the first game, there will probably be plenty of these as optional side missions.

The main mission line is going to be more like the faction mission in the demo, or that IGN video with the rocket launch that someone linked to earlier.

Hm, good to hear. The faster cars can be tricky with a gamepad, too.

You're basically an action star in a popcorn film, what do you expect? Game looks like it'll be much better than the first.

That's what I wanted to hear. I tried the original only because the demo was hilariously unrealistic. So thanks for the confirmation they didn't change anything and made it ultra unrealistic :D

Why does everyone want a "realistic" game? I like these cheese ball action games. They rarely make them and they're usually a fun treat.
