Just Cause 2 Demo Impressions - 360/PS3/PC

Speaking of blowing stuff up. WTF am I missing when trying to blow the first little town up. I got the water tower, the little stand by the bell tower, and the complete gas station. Where the hell is the rest of the stuff to destroy that area completly?

it's not just destroying but collecting all the upgrades in the town.
there are a few boxes on the roofs of the buildings (and the water tower) to collect before you can max the town out.

I almost cleared the military base but a few things eluded me and i ran out of time.

Gotta collect all the gun part and upgrades in the area as well.

The only thing I miss about the original is parasailing behind cars/boats. Is there any way to do that in this game, or does the grapple automatically pull you to the vehicle? I guess it's a little less useful in this game since you can slingshot-parachute yourself on any terrain, but it was always fun to just attach yourself behind a car and coast.

Just hold the grapple button rather than tapping it.

That doesn't work unless I'm doing it wrong. I grapple a car and A/whatever on things other than the 360 to parachute/jump and I only jump. :/ Opening the parachute with the grapple/tap and grappling a car doesn't seem to affect the parachute either.

Yeah you can't parasail, holding LB to try and get a car to pull you doesn't work, the grapple will just keep extending while the car drives rather then hold taut.

That's kind of shocking, honestly. As much fun as I had with the demo, I wasn't expecting a high score. Hope the praise continues.

Aww damn, you're right. I had tried it before for only a few seconds and it looked like it was working, but I guess I was already keeping pace with the car. Now I'm upset that I can't parasail anymore.

Full 360 controller support, including on-screen button prompts. I don't know about other gamepads, though. After seeing the glorious PC graffix I couldn't betray the Master Race on this one.

Wow, really. Ok, looks like I'm investing in a wired 360 controller. Anyone know the cheapest way to get one?

If you have a PS3 just use the DS3 controller and usb cable.
Costs you nothing.

Is there official Win 7 drivers by Sony for that though? Last I checked there was NO drives (even for XP) for the DS3/Six-Axis.

Not official, you have to run in "unsigned driver mode" but when you do that they work fine. They even have an "emulate xbox360 controller" mode which works flawlessly (at least for Just Cause 2 anyway)

information on how to do it here.. the steps are relatively easy and it works great.

I'm running it on Windows 7 64 bit.

These drivers have stupid issues. As soon as I unplug the controller from my PC it turns my PS3 on.

$27 at Amazon with free shipping looks like. I've seen the wired versions $25-30 at Wal-Mart/Target sometimes on clearance when they seemed to be trying get rid of overstock. (EDIT: Looks like they're $27 at Wal-Mart too, but walmart.com has shipping and tax iirc, http://www.walmart.com/ip/Microsoft-Wired-Controller-Chill-White-Xbox-360-Xbox-360/4196264)

And it's plug in play with stuff like this, Batman, etc. No configuring and it controls just like the 360 version. Plus games are actually using the buttons on-screen these days unlike the early ones.

Will have some issues with the triggers not being recognized in some older games, but there are custom drivers you can use if need be. (Or you can just use whatever you used to control them with!)

Yea, it's just something you have to live with if you want to use your DS3. It's easy enough for me to get around since my computer and PS3 are right next to each other. I'm pretty sure there is no way around it doing that, unfortunately.

Anyways, having an awesome time with the demo. Using the hack that lets me explore the rest of the map/no time limit/everything is unlocked in the black market store is pretty awesome. I can't wait to get the game when I have a bit of extra cash. The only problem I'm running into is the game will freeze after like 45 minutes on me some times. I THINK it might be related to the hack, but I'm not positive. It's only happened a few times, so no big worry, and If I have to wait for the full release to play it some more, so be it.

Soon as i get this game , gonna get a slow ass car , a 6 pack of beer and drive from 1 side of the map to another :D

One of the reasons I love sandbox games, especially those like Just Cause 2, and GTA San Andreas. I can't even count how many times I just put GTA: SA in for long drives across the cities, and countryside switching between vehicles every time I flip/destroy one, and that game was small in comparison to JC2. Can't wait.

I almost wanted FUEL just for this reason. (Until I played it that is.)

I was driving all over the demo (free clock mod yay) and I can't believe how big that area is. I'll lose it with the full game. I'm pretty sure the demo alone is bigger than Saint's Row 2.

Huh, I should futz about with it on my laptop (that can't run Just Cause, but it would be nice for emulators... :lol ), Win 7 64 there as well.

I could use my 360 controller, but I only have a wireless. :(

Or not. :( I think it's because of the Blutooth and the drivers using the USB mode?

someone has probably mentioned it already but...

i read somewhere that the game world is about 460 square kilometers, and the place is called Panau... so of course i remembered that there exists this island country called Palau, so i thought hmmm i wonder how big that country is... went to check on Wikipedia, and wow, mind blown: 459 square kilometers.

the game basically contains an entire country! pretty damn crazy.

To be honest I never had those issues but then I never unplugged the USB. It makes sense though, you unplug the USB and sure it'll use BT to communicate again.

I didn't want to buy an official 360 controller, mostly because I can't see myself playing a lot of controller games on the PC. I want to play Just Cause 2. This lets me play the superior version of Just Cause 2, with a controller, that cost me a LOT less.
Easy choice for me, I don't mind dicking around with my pc to get stuff to works, the drivers work well enough that I played the JC2 demo start-> 4 times with no issues (other than game bugs unrelated to the controller).

I would recommend trying the DS3 drivers if you have a rig capable of running JC2 or simply want a cheap controller for your PC to play arcade type/emulation games.

Usually when I start the demo I hug a rocketing propane tank into the air and Grapplechute my way over to the cargo helicopter underneath the radio tower, but last time I turned right around and dived straight off the mountain. Then I Grapplechuted myself all the way up the other mountain in the south, or at least as far as I could get before getting to the demo area boundary. It was a parachute climb of 712m, which I was pretty impressed with, although it would have been higher if I hadn't started halfway up another mountain. After admiring the view for a bit I jumped off again, but unfortunately the ground didn't fall away quite as steeply as I would have liked, and I opened my chute too late. I expected to hit the ground and try again, instead I tumbled and slid and ragdollized all the way down the mountain. It was beautiful :D

The Ragdoll is kinda annoying, you tumble tumble, slow. But you aren't finished tumbling and can't get a chance to pick yourself up and stop sliding. :/

The game is actually 400 square miles, which means it's over twice as large as an entire country.

I don't know if this has been discussed or not earlier in this thread, but after playing the demo, does anyone feel that the next GTA installment should 'borrow' more from JC2? I mean, the lovely blue skies, the skydiving shit, the environments.

I loved GTA Vice City, because of the music and the atmosphere, and I loved GTA San Andreas for it's nice countrysides and mountains and hills and stuff. GTA4 was too much city like, and there was too little natural environments, like forests and mountains and stuff.

I'd rather see Just Cause borrow the destruction of Red Faction Guerrilla. Huge environments, plus grappling hook, plus Geomod = greatest game ever.

You do realize that every tree on the island is destroyable right? It is pretty damn impressive considering how huge the map is. While it doesnt reach Red Faction Guerilla destructability, it is still good.

I popped in Mercs 2 for comparison. The thing I dislike about both are the number of expendable enemies. It seems they throw an army at you and you get shot and blown up from all directions at once. I'd like fewer enemies and better AI.

I have higher hopes for JC2 though.

I'm not sure if it's common knowledge or not, but I was playing around with parachute opening distance and found out that you can hit the ground at max speed and take no damage as long as the parachute is fully open when you hit the ground.

Basically, you can dive from the top of the game facing downwards and moving at max speed, tap the parachute about five feet off the ground, and get up with no health lost.

Pretty fun to do.

And once I jumped incorrectly and ragdolled the entire way down the big mountain. It took about three minutes to hit the bottom.

You don't even need to open the parachute. Just grapple the ground when you get close.

You don't need to open the parachute at all. As log as you grapple the ground before you hit it, you'll land like a pro.

In fact, when you do grapple the ground you fly towards it quicker than you'd fall anyway and you still survive.

That's what makes this game awesome. You're pretty much a gravity defying GOD.

Edit: Annnd beaten

Recorded this the other day. Tried to see if I could make it down the mountain, ended up seeing how many flips I could do, :lol. Still processing as of me writing this, so the quality sucks atm, but once It's finished you should be able to watch in 1080p.

Off-topic, but the post-patch PC port of Mercs 2 is surprisingly good. Mercs 2 is a cakewalk though. I'm hoping JC2 is more challenging.

I just listened to Avalanche's latest podcast and the guy said there will be changes and tweaks in the full game. It will also be supported by patches, something that JC1 wasn't.

This happened to me, too. As annoying as it was not to be able to move, it was well worth it to watch his body continue to tumble down this huge mountain.:lol
