Just Cause 3 - early impressions thread

The leaderboards are the worst. They are tracking shit like "furthest distance travelled while ragdolling" and covering a decent chunk of the screen with it frequently.

So what i'm getting its just more of JC2 with better graphics plus a few little things.

If thats the case i'll wait for it to be $20, especially since there is no MP at launch.

People are always in disagreement about what driving should feel like. I too disliked the way they cars felt in Just Cause 2, but I liked how they felt in GTA5 which I know many people don't like!

Apparently its Steamworks that is causing the issue with connecting issues in menu.
When you put Steam into Offline mode you can play fine.

I wonder what the team that worked on the nemesis system is doing i hope it's something else other then lord of the rings, would be sick to see them do a spawn game or vagabond game
Different studio, that was Monolith. Its still crazy to me that games haven't stolen that system. Mad Max would have been a much better game with it.

It happens on PS4 too. Either way, it's one of the worst implementations of leaderboards since the start of last gen.

Yeah Mad Max is $15-25 at a lot of places still this weekend including Best Buy and the Microsoft Store (not xbox.com, but microsoftstore.com and physical MS stores). I bought one last week for $16 with GCU and been playing it, I played at launch but traded it away as Destiny was taking up all my time. Loving Mad Max so far, really fits that post apoc driving itch that Fallout started.

Gonna buy JC3 next year but way too many games to play right now, its not part of the $10 Best Buy preorder program either so made it pretty easy to skip for now. Kinda sucks, I imagine sales aren't going to look very good but hopefully it didn't cost too much to make.

The collectors edition was kinda lame too, a weird non functional grappling hook.

Another fun fact that I feel people don't realise.
That's whole skill tree is locked up behind "challenge" missions which are mostly bad mini games. (The wingsuit one is literally just flying through rings.)

It feels like the devs played a bit too much Saints Row.

Really bummed about the gunplay. I could tell from the GB Quicklook that it was bad. I do realize it's not the draw to this kind of game though, so I understand how it isn't that big of a deal to most people.

This is seriously taking a giant dump on my hype.

Why do they have to ruin their games with nonsensical decisions like this ?

I think the challenges look fun, so I am okay with that. Not to mention that they add more to do in the game beyond flying around and blowing up stuff.

NOOOOOO. I absolutely despise Saints Row

I've been playing for about 3 hours now on PS4 (all offline to avoid the connection errors).
I can honestly say this is the most disappointing game of the year for me. I was really looking forward to it after loving Just Cause 2.
The story, or lack of is just crap and not in a funny way. It's just bad.
The framerate is bad at times. Mostly when you're traversing it will stay a solid 30, but as soon as you start causing chaos (which is what the game is all about) it just constantly drops and hitches. One time it dropped to single digits like it was going to crash.
The most annoying part is that all the unlocks are locked behind bad mini games. Most of which have stupid inconsistent load times anywhere from 10 seconds up to 1 min 30 for some.
Graphically it's a pretty mixed bag. The draw distance is pretty impressive but some of the pop-in on shadows is notable, also it's the most jagged game I've played this gen, like there's no anti-aliasing at all at times.
So yeah I've a bit of buyer's remorse on this one, might just cut my loses and trade it in next week. Oh well.

Intrigued to see how this reviews, and if the reviews actually take any technical deficiencies into account, or just pretty much gloss over them like what has happened of late.

That will stop happening once servers go up and game comes out

It won't bother me if I tell my ps4 to not go online on boot though, right ?

Hm. Well, that's OK.
I kept my ps4 offline with MGSV too, accessing the menu was taking way too long for me

These negative impressions are surprising, I thought this would be a lock for GoTY material.

Guess I'll check if I can cancel my PSN pre-order

Just cause 2 was a while ago at this point. I was expecting a big step forward for this franchise as I thought jc2 showed tremendous potential. Very disappointed by the impressions so far.

sad to hear no acceleration via parachute, but from what i've seen, it looks possible in the wingsuit, so we'll see how that plays.

It's a mod that you can unlock.

ah, did not read any of the other impressions, that's good to hear.

It's been a long time since i've played JC2 and i'm ready for some more stupid fun, cannot wait for this game. Still trying to find out if 900 p vs 1080p is important over controller preference though.

Id go with the xbox one version if that is stable.

Ps4 is not stable at all at any point

Probably avoiding this one until I get a new PC.
Yet another PS4 game with terrible framerate drops. Everything else sounds pretty average as well.

T___T

Best part of the game so far is David Tennant as the guy reading government PR on the radio.

I thought it was him too, haha. The radio broadcasts are easily the funniest thing in the game so far. And the unskippable audio logs are the worst.

Anyway, been goofing around with the wingsuit some more, getting the hang of it a bit more but it's still pretty hard to traverse long distances.

Technically the game gets pretty rough at times. Pretty massive framerate dips, slowdowns, audio hickups and that sort of nonsense.

Hopefully it can live on in steam sales or something. I loved it but it just came out at a bad time.

For what it's worth, I literally just bought it off of BestBuy's BF sales again.... prior I already had it but sold if off due to wanting to strictly focus on Phantom Pain (which literally took me a month and a half to beat).
This time though, plan to give it some proper love :)

As far as JC3.... yeah, between the erratic performance and mix-feeling about the loadtimes, I think i can wait a bit. Plus, from the vids I've seen of the story cinematics, it looks like too try-hard funny... and yeah I know it's JC and you shouldn't care about the story, but I need to at least give some sort of shit about the world/characters. It's why I never got into JC2. Fun sandbox but completely dull in regards to everything else.

Brilliant game, but much like the new Tomb Raider, it was basically sent out to die

I don't think the new Tomb Raider was sent out to die at all. Microsoft has been promoting it pretty heavily as its one of their big holiday exclusives, and it's an amazing game to boot.

I have a feeling that Just Cause 3 is going to be a far superior game on PC. A decently species rig with a solid state drive should fix the loading and framerate complaints at the very least (I hope). It's still a day one purchase for me.

First thing I did when I heard him was look it up to make sure it was actually him, he has such a distinctive voice though it was pretty clear.

Then I climbed the highest mountain, jumped off it, blew up a railroad bridge and sat and watched trains plummeting to their firey doom and found a highly defended airbase and wrecked it to get access to jets.
Loving this game, despite the issues.

Also I find the wingsuit really easy to control, I think yes just because it controls a lot like the Far Cry 4 wingsuit and I played a crap load of that.

Took a plane and flew over the entire map.

From what I can gather there are only two "biomes"; mediterranian forest and snow. Also, there are zero interesting landmarks. No big cities [or any city/urban area], no insane buildings like the Waterfall Casino or the three-tower hotel, no Mile High Club.

Nothing. There's one island that had something pretty neat, but other than that I have to say I'm a little disappointed.

Boom island on PS4 is fun as fuck so far.

Wing suit so peaceful. u~u
