Just Cause 3 - early impressions thread

We don't know anything about the PC version's performance though. For all we know it could be a disaster.

The Giant Bomb Quick Look (the one posted on the site yesterday) was running on PC. That was running on ultra settings, and I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that they have a 980 in their PC? Vinny wasn't sure but he said he thought the PC that the devs brought in for the previous Quick Look EX had a 780.

FYI, and I can't really say much because of embargos (which is dumb given some places are selling it), I'm reviewing it on PC and I'm playing maxed everything (minus AA, which I'm using SMAA) at 1440p. So I'll cover my performance highs and lows.

Outlook looks good but you never know.

Like 90 percent of the prerelease footage has been PC, you can find a lot of examples of its performance out there.

I know Gamersyde saw the game running on a single 970 at 60fps with near max settings, that's encouraging for sure but I would advise caution nonetheless.

My previous comment was incorrect though, we do have pieces of information regarding performance but I have a hard time recommending anyone to go PC when there is no benchmarks around nor user reports.

MGSV was certainly disappointing in some way. Not every game can be perfect and every game has flaws. I think it just comes down to whether the rest of a specific game makes up for the flaws each person experiences.

  • Fallout 4 is a graphic and technical mess with over-simplified game and very little improvements over F3/NV, but lots of drawbacks
  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate is more debated among players, it can be seen as the same formula/engine with too much nonsense (horsecars etc) or has a fun/more polished episode
  • SW Battlefront hasn't got enough content to offer and the simplified gameplay can be fun but won't satisfy everyone (especially those who like competitive MP FPS)
  • Rise of the TR is just an add-on of the first TR, with same qualities/flaws, it is definitely not what Uncharted 2 was to Uncharted 1
  • COD:BO3 has the worst COD campaign ever and a multi-player inferior to AW
  • Need for Speed has a pretty engine...and that's all.

These are all sequels. If a sequel is not at least a little bit better than the previous episode, then it's a failure.

It's not "everything is a subjective experience", there are facts and perspective.

Yeah, sure it isn't.

Quill18 did a video on Youtube of the PC version.

There were some MAJOR framerate hitches, but he never actually mentions them. Makes me wonder if it was the capture/video/my internet that was causing it. It was blatantly obvious and hard to imagine one wouldn't mention it when talking about the game.

If you watch the video now he has an annotation that it was an issue with his recording software. It does indeed look awful in that video.

My definition of "fact" must be pretty different from your own because most of those items you've listed seem a lot like opinion to me.

These consoles really weren't ready for next gen IMO. I really do like my PS4 and xbox one, but man. They have proven that they are pretty good at running last gen games at a higher resolution and framerate, but I feel like they really do struggle with actual next gen only games.

Uhm.. nah

I mean the ps4 is perfectly capable of running this game better im sure of it.

What streams confirm "this game is shit"? BTW they already did the" advertising" QL EX with the devs, there is still the QL with their own opinions.

Any video showing off the ps4 version. There is a reason all footage and streamers on youtube are using pc versions.

The ps4 version is crappy, but the game isnt shit

One of the biggest issues I have with the game is when liberating locations, you'll get everything you need destroyed and one little box will be hiding behind a building as you spend minute after minute playing pixel hunt, it's not fun when it comes to that. Maybe I'm missing a ability later that let's you find them easier or I am missing something, but that really, really kills pacing.

Hey man I had the same issue but after destroying a bunch of shit look at the map and the remaining chaos objects are on the map :).

I dont understand why they didnt tie mod progression to total chaos :/. So why are we earning chaos now??

That's good to know but the game never explained that, nor tells me what these icons mean. Its all like just thrown in your face. I mean I know I can fast travel, loading tell mes, but still have no idea how, the map just gives me marker points. The font is super tiny too in the map/menu for some stuff. The design decisions I'm this game just drive me a bit batty. Where is my mini map if I want one? Games so much fun when it's firing on all cylinders. Also about chaos yeah. What point does it serve?

I have played like 30 minutes of it and it's fun, looks nice and plays well.

Took forever to install, though. It also continually attempts to login, even in the middle of playing. It's fucking obnoxious as hell!

So it seems like console wise Xbox>ps4 in frames? But Xbox<ps4 in resolution?

Since I favor the Xbox controller I'll lean that route

If any-one is playing this on Xbox one, to get around the annoying menu, connecting to server issue, go into console settings and offline the console - this stops it trying and timing out all the time.

I can tell you you apparantly need a fast travel flare if you want to fast travel. When looking at the map in the bottom right it says:

Fast travel 1 of 1 flare

This is not true. Fast travel has worked for me without a flare. Maybe we need a flare for long distance? Because I was able to fast travel without flare for short distances.

I was looking forward to this, but if the early impressions are that it's a mess on ps4....

I'm gonna be so bummed out.
Not exactly a mess. I would call Fallout 4 a mess on PS4, but this one isn't. I mean Fallout 4 had terrible graphics yet the draw distance was awful with its lack of shadows and the frame rate still hitched as low as 20 fps. This one has a great draw distance and the frame rate is good for the majority of the game except when we go crazy and start causing explosions. It is not unplayable level of performance by any means but definitely requires a patch.

Atleast this one has less bugs than what people faced in Fallout 4, which was just a buggy mess.

Didnt know about fast travel since slasherjpc says its barely explained, if you dont need the flare why does it say 1 flare of 1 lol.

Yeah but causing explosions and chaos is what this game is all about lol, not just the traversal.. Yes when you are moving around the world the fps is alright but I dont think its locked at 30 at all.

Ive had worse fps problems in this game then in 60 hours of Fallout 4, and Ive played this for a few hours. The loading times are worse than F4 too. Yes the draw distance is nice but it seems that it lacks AA or my new tv is making this game uglier than it is.

I do think this one lacks some serious AA. There is basically none as there are sure a lot of jaggies, which do get distracting.

Those sure are some subjective facts.

So a professional website records them playing and enjoys it: Advertising.

Some random dude streaming it on twitch and says it's shit: Legit.

lol alright.

He was referring to the QL EX of the game, he said on this page that he wasn't aware that there also existed a normal QL of the game.

To be fair, there were two Quick Looks, a "Quick Look EX" with the developers along for the ride which was basically a promotional tool, and one with just the Giant Bomb East crew playing it for themselves.

Hey guys I got a challenge for you.
Try to get 5 gears on "dare devil sprint"
Good luck!
The controls are broken so you need it!

O my gooood these loading times are absolutely insane. I've been sitting here typing this on my phone while the progress bar hasn't even reached 10%. I've been waiting for two minutes, easily.

There is something very wrong with this game.

Can you, at least, share your config? :o

If I absolutely loved Just Cause 2, I'll like this, right?

That's all I want. Turn off my brain, blow shit up, do crazy stuff.

Yep you'll love it. It's good at what it's good at. Mayhem, blowing shit up. Oddly a lot of the cooler features are locked behind doing the challenges, that said the challenges are fun mostly.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a bug, since they vary so much.
I hope they'll say something regardless.
