Just Cause 3 - early impressions thread

  • Fallout 4 is a graphic and technical mess with over-simplified game and very little improvements over F3/NV, but lots of drawbacks
  • Assassin's Creed Syndicate is more debated among players, it can be seen as the same formula/engine with too much nonsense (horsecars etc) or has a fun/more polished episode
  • SW Battlefront hasn't got enough content to offer and the simplified gameplay can be fun but won't satisfy everyone (especially those who like competitive MP FPS)
  • Rise of the TR is just an add-on of the first TR, with same qualities/flaws, it is definitely not what Uncharted 2 was to Uncharted 1
  • COD:BO3 has the worst COD campaign ever and a multi-player inferior to AW
  • Need for Speed has a pretty engine...and that's all.

These are all sequels. If a sequel is not at least a little bit better than the previous episode, then it's a failure.

It's not "everything is a subjective experience", there are facts and perspective.

lmao.

Wow.

I wish someone had posted videos of Mercanaries and Red Faction Guerrilla showing them dropping below 30fps when tons of stuff was exploding so I could have cancelled my preorders on them too.

Me too lol. Those things were a mess beyond belief. But at least back then many stores still had some return systems available.
Its awesome to finally have some ability for consumers to know what they are getting into. Can't count the number of times people felt ill or we had to stop playing a game because of low FPS in prior gens or worse yet just stopped playing because they played so poorly. Hopefully it continues to push the console makers to demand a 30 locked FPS which is only natural and an absolute minimum.

Managed to steal a fighter plane off the back of a train as it passed through an enemy compound. Managed to evade all the rockets before crashing the plane into a tree and lamp post as i landed it at a base.

Love this game.

Did one early mission (slight spoilers)
Where you have to stop a missile launch
I kid you not the whole mission seemed to run at 20fps.
Still the worst part are the load times for challenges, especially Destruction Frenzy. Shit can take upto 3 minutes to load some. Terrible considering you need to do them for the unlocks. Shit Sucks.

Holy shit his point flew so far over your head I think he almost surrounded Earth and came back under your feet :O

Nope hence the LOL. I was being facetious or at the very least incredibly hyperbolic. Its something I like to do whenever anyone hints at more consumer information being anything other than awesome.
But it does look like at least one post flew over someones head hahaha

But whats odd is I keep seeing people post videos and saying it looks fine and those videos are actually dropping frames and lower than 30 as well so I think many people are just getting very accustomed to lower than 30fps.
That's what modern 30fps is, though. Last-gen got us used to that, PS360 games all advertised as running at "30fps" and all actually running at around 20-22fps and merely "targeting" 30fps. It's what people became accustomed to calling "30fps", when in fact it wasn't. That's also why people complain about how horrible 30fps is... they're not actually complaining about 30fps, they're complaining about the 20fps that the industry insists on calling "30fps".

A smooth and consistent 30fps is perfectly playable for many types of games, including most third-person action games.

But, it seems to be continuing to hold true this gen as well, with only a few exceptions... if you want a smooth framerate, it's PC or bust. Shit, look at Fallout 4.. plenty of people playing it locked at 30fps even on PC because it's still way smoother than what the consoles are doing.

Ya no arguments here. Just different jumping in points for the term.

Though there are indeed some locked 30fps and locked 60fps consoles games. Which is nice.

You absolutely should. I am surprised most people haven't by now.
I checked your Mad Max review but wasn't convinced it was anything special. It's cool that the upgrades and things are tied to gameplay, but little tweaks won't get me to try out another open world game with limited gameplay (seems to just be driving and combat) and seemingly no story worth talking about, especially when you compare it to ones this year. Glad to hear you had a blast with it, though.

I get it. Many saying the same thing about JC3. Its all up to the degrees of improvement/change you want or expect from a title.

I was going to get the game for my PS4. My PC is aging a bit so I don't know how it'll handle it. I have a 3570k, 8gb ram and an r9 280. If I can get the game to run at a constant 30 It's probably worth going for the PC.

I was looking at the recommended specs and they seem pretty high. Is that because we are starting to talk about 4k and stuff? I'm just going to be running it at 1080.

This game is definately as addicting as Just Cause 2, technical issues aside. When it gets going, the game is super fun. And surprisingly hard at times, the enemies are relentless and all eagle-eyed sharpshooters.

Especially once you reach threat level 3 and choppers get called in things can get crazy and you end up in some bizarro vicious circle of violence with neverending chopper support and crazy stuff everywhere. It's just so cool to hijack a chopper, destroy some shit, and just as it's about to explode jump out, grapple to another chopper and just continue the mayhem.

Also, finally got the hang of the wingsuit. The trick is to pull back the stick when grappling forward so you actually move up instead of down towards the ground. Practice makes perfect.

Story is a complete mess. In fact, it's so crazy disjointed it feels like started watching the 9th episode of a series that's in its third season. So much random shit, and basically everything boils down to "go here and destroy everything" or "escort this moronic AI as it struggles with the most basic pathfinding while a million enemy vehicles are shooting at it". Which is okay in a sense, nobody buys a Just Cause game for the story.

Still wish the game had some likeable characters though. And voice actors. David Tennant as the radio announcer is a catastrophic misuse of his talent. He blows everyone out of the water, and only has like 15-second segments. I'm pretty sure he actually plays himself too, heh.

Locked 30 on PC at 1080p without AA. If you can't do that...then man. We are in dire territory.

Is stereoscopic 3D back in? JC2 had the some of the best 3D support of any PC game I've played. It would be hard for me to play this one w/o it.

Are there any cheat codes or unlockables that allow for unlimited ammo and the like? I seem to recall this existed on JC2 on PC, but I can't quite remember...

Your pc smashes the hell out of a Ps4. I would be surprised if you couldn't hit 60fps

I completely agree about how the "30 fps" people hate is actually often 17-22 fps. I really don't think people give a decent 30 fps it's due. Sure I prefer 60, but 30 is decent.

Didn't they make Mad Max as well which had awful car handling, even if I enjoyed the game overall.

Story has never really been a high mark for the series, at least in refards to Just Cause 2. It was so over the top ridiculous
the last mission you are on a god damn rocket beating up the main villain
that it's really hard to understand the tone or narrative.

I just really hope clearing out bases has good incentive this time, in jc2 it became such a chore doing the same things over and over, with the only real benefit being your completion percentage going up.

What? Mad Max was great on that regard. I mean, yeah, it handles bad at the beggining but that makes sense since you making your car better throughout the game is kinda a central point. The car handling was great after some upgrades.

Any word on whether this game has any awesome easter-egg-like locations like the Mile High Club in JC2? Nearly everyone of my JC2 sessions consisted of fucking with that place at one point or another.

Car handling in MM was heavily related to car weight and tyre choice. If one tried to equip all the available armor, yeah, it freaking sucked.

That only applied to the magnum opus tho. A lot of the faction cars indeed handled like crap.

Is this game better with a controller or a mouse on PC?

I mean, mouse aims faster, like always, but aiming doesn't really seem to be as important as in other games thanks to a generous lock-on and lots of rapid-fire weapons. In the controller's favor, analog wingsuit and vehicle controls. That seems important in this game.

So, mouse or Xbox 360 controller?

Different teams first off. Plus the handling in Mad Max was pretty good.

For this game ex-Criterion Burnout staff came in to help out Avalanche NYC with all vehicle handling.

Lol @ 60-70 meta prediction :D

Just Cause 2 had around 81 meta score. I am positive Just Cause 3 will get somewhere between 78 to 83. Certainly not 60-70. Greater than 75 for sure. The game has technical flaws but it doesn't mean we ignore the fun it offers.
