Ran the game last night with the Steam FPS indicator up, I normally don't care about that stuff too much. Just wanted to see what was really going on.

i5 (stock), 970, 16GB, Win 10

Blew up a petrol station and 60 went straight down to 30 for a couple of seconds, then 40 and back to 60. That happened a lot whenever explosions kicked in, didn't realise how low it was going, given the explosions obliterate everything.

Saw my first floating (parked) car last night too, was chasing a moped rider with a tractor I'd just hijacked when I came across it.

Well, after about half an hour of mucking around (I was still working my way through AssCreed Syndicate when I made this thread), I can say that, at least for now, the game seems to run just fine for me: no stuttering, no crashes, and no painfully obvious framerate dips. It's installed to an SSD (960GB Crucial M500) and my core specs are as follows: 32GB DDR3-2400, 2600K @ 4.5GHz, GTX 980 (359.06) and Win10 x64.

Have you tried disabling in-game vsync and enabling adaptive vysnc in nvidia control panel?

Finally felt brave enough to dabble with overclocking to try and solve the performance issues with this game.

Overclocked my i7-4790k from its stock 4.0GHz to all cores at 4.6GHz. Ran tests for stability, and my water cooling kept it at good temps. Played the game for a few hours and only saw one drop from 60fps to high 50s when I was raining down death on a large base with helicopter missiles. It was a significant improvement in performance. Prior to overclocking, just a few explosions at the same or collapse of a large physics object would mean a hit well in the 50s and sometimes high 40s.

My GTX 980ti never seems very taxed with everything on and maxed. Seems the CPU was the culprit, but I thought I wouldn't need to worry about overclocking at least for another year or two.

FYI I'm still green when it comes to PC gaming so read my anecdotes with that in mind.

Drops to 58 fps doesn't happen often. Think it could be related to streaming as it's installed on wd raptor hdd.

Ahh yeah, probably the streaming would do it. IIRC streaming is CPU intensive which would leave less resources for this seemingly CPU heavy game.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure MFAA only works in conjunction with MSAA not SMAA.

Thanks for the clarification, must have been the placebo affect I suppose. I find AA solutions a bit difficult to understand.

I'm playing fine for a while (though with framdrops and all that but playable) then for no apparent reason the game decides to start mAcrostuttering and becomes unplayable, with microfeezes of 1/4th of a second every other second or more.

Only solution seems to be to exit from the game and reenter it, but considering it takes about 40 hours to start up, it's pretty fucking annoying.

I'm wondering if it's some memory leak problem, and if having more than 8GB of ram would help.

I hope they're working on a patch double time, because otherwise i'm having a lot of fun with the game (even though it has many flaws beyond that).

As I posted a few pages back, I noticed the game using a significant amount of memory - I'd say there is a reasonable chance that if you're experiencing stuttering, it's because you're running out of memory. I haven't experienced *any* stuttering, just one crash.

Haven't had any freezing or stuttering yet, game is performing well for me so far (70fps+, but everything on max except AA, which I'm now going to put on max). Haven't read through the whole thread, but the game seems to use *a lot* of RAM. Are people's stutters related to that?

Yeah, you definitely want more than 8GB RAM for longer sessions:

In system requirements terms, I'd say 8GB is minimum, 12GB recommended and 16GB optimal.

I have shelved this game for now, I have 2x780's but as I can only use one, the game's fps is all over the place and hampers my enjoyment for the game, for now it can stay on the shelf with AC Syndicate, maybe until Pascal if they don't get better (or SLI support) before then.

What was your temps? Used to have my 4790K oc'd to 4.6 ghurtz but whenever I ran witcher 3, cpu temp would hit around 72-73C even with h100i water cooler installed so I'm currently running at 4.4 ghurtz. Currently idling at 27C though.

Thanks, this made a BIG difference. Drops are far smaller and the whole game feels much more fluid.
That's great. Yeah, adaptive vsync usually does the trick for me when I experience severe framerate fluctuations

Thought it was confirmed JC3 didn't support Steam cloud saves for whatever reason.

Steam Cloud is shown in the game's properties on Steam. Normally it's not there for games that don't support it. I suppose it could be there by mistake though?

Shows up with 0 bytes used/9.54 MB available, too. It's really weird.

I thought I was losing my mind when the saves were not syncing! I too have 0 bytes/9.54MB showing up in the Properties!

No SLI support and now THIS? This makes me livid! What an absolute pathetic excuse of a game! Worthless developer antics - late 2015 game w/ no SLI and no cloud saves!

As I said before, Just Cause = Just SHIT!

Idle is usually 32C (was 27C before overclock). In game average is around 60C and it peaks in low 70s like yours. I could turn on performance mode for cooling but it's a bit noisy, and doesn't seem necessary for the most part. Don't know how temps would look if I did.

Dangerous temps for our CPU is 85C and above if I understand correctly. Let me know if that is not the case though!

Got a Kraken x61 by the way. Did overclocking help with Witcher 3 performance? I really thought this CPU at stock speed would be overkill for year or two. I kept reading all over the internet i5's are all you really need for gaming and the GPU does the rest. Guess that's not so true.

Got some extra kick outta my system by adjusting a few things with my hardware.

Game now runs solid at 60fps outside explosions (on a single 7970@1080) where it dips down to anything from 27-33 depending on the size. I blow up a gas station early in my tests and it went down to 20fps easily but I replicated the same test in a gas station with 10 cars + 5 explosive barrels + 1 helicopter and it now only hits 33fps, huzzah for overclocking.

What settings?

Borderless windowed mode
V-sync off (G-sync)
16x AF forced in the drivers
2560x1440
SMAA
Texture Quality Very High
Water Detail High
Water Tesselation On
LOD Factor Very High
Shadow Quality High
SSAO On
Motion Blur On
Edge Fade Off
Global Illumination Off
Screen Space Reflections On

The frame rate ranges from 35-75 and only ever drops below 30 when REALLY big, multi-stage explosions are happening and Rico is within like 30m of them. Those drops are infrequent and momentary and I have not had my experience ruined by frame rate dips once in my 20+ hours of play. However, the game's performance does degrade over time. I was looking at the ocean after about two hours of play and the frame rate was at 41, but after quitting the game and returning to the same spot the frame rate was over 50.

Go into options and disable hud or set to reticles only. This means you wont have a weapon or ammo display though.

The online stuff is so stupid. Why the hell would anyone want constant onscreen updates about other players' random single player stats and their own gliding distance? Did anyone ask for this?

Game's unplayable on my 970. If I didn't get it cheap, I'd be pretty pissed.

What are the rest of your specs and what settings/resolution are you running? What is 'unplayable" to you?

The way that some people post in these PC performance threads it's like you don't want help and you want the game to run badly so that you can just moan about it.

I really don't get it.

Damn.

Well this month I'm tight with money (Christmas and all) so i'll just focus on finishing up Witcher 3 for now.

I'm just wondering if this game is proving to me how amazing g sync is. I'm maxxed out at 1440p 2600k with a titan x and I can't perceive any fps drops

It supports Steam Cloud but doesn't actually use it for anything. By default, Steam Cloud is linked to userdata\[user id]\[app id]\remote, however JC3 doesn't actually store anything there. Saves and settings are stored in My Docs\Squeenix\Just Cause 3 and the Steam Cloud configuration needs to be updated accordingly.

Game's unplayable on my 970. If I didn't get it cheap, I'd be pretty pissed.

Try the following.

Enable Vsync via Nvidia System Properties.

Before starting the game via steam: right-click on Just Cause 3 -> Properties -> Set launch options... -> input /windowed /borderless -> OK.

Turn off fullscreen and vsync once ingame (in the ingame settings).

No idea why, but this magically helped my framerate a lot. I know it doesn't make sense! That said, it still can go down to 47ish from time to time, but the overall performance is much better. Before that my performance was all over the place, not matter what I did. I even lowered the resolution to 900p and it still dropped down to low 40s.

Anyone else having their memory downclock with this game? I'm on a 980 with 359.06.

Known issue. Pcgameshardware.de already reported that problem to nvidia.

Isee do you enable adaptive vsync for this fix or just normal vsync?

Normal.
And as said, it's not a fix, framerate will still take hits below 60, even below 50 (very rarely) (especially when using the wingsuit), explosions on the other hand doesn't seem to do too much.
But overall it performs better, for whatever reason.
Surpicco is one of the worse areas (performance wise), for me.

Avalanche Details Differences Between Mad Max & Just Cause 3 Engines

With the release of Just Cause 3, a lot of gamers wondered why the game performs so horribly on both the PC and current-gen consoles, especially when Mad Max was a top-notch title. Was it because the game was developed by the New York studio of Avalanche (and not the Stockholm one that was responsible for Mad Max)? Or is it more of a technical issue? And why was Mad Max supporting SLI but not Just Cause 3? Well, Avalanche Studios has detailed the differences between the Mad Max and the Just Cause 3 engines.

just cause is doing more and looks a bit better than mad max, although i dont think the performance is justified by whats on offer. just cause 3 still seems like a game that started off as a ps360 title tho.

No damn, there is a TON of shit on the screen. You can say that it's not so good in terms of grass LoD and, sometime, textures quality but come on
PBR, SSR, GI, Waveworks, Water Tessellation and destructibility in a hugely huge open world, for what it offer is really justified for some flaws here and there. Mad Max is good, but Just Cause 3 is head and shoulders above

It supports Steam Cloud but doesn't actually use it for anything worthwhile. By default, Steam Cloud is linked to userdata\[user id]\[app id]\remote, however all JC3 stores in there is a 2KB "dbdata" file. Saves and settings are stored in My Docs\Squeenix\Just Cause 3 and the Steam Cloud configuration needs to be updated accordingly.

So is Steam Cloud Save possible? If so, how do we do it?

It's tiresome to have to copy/paste the saves each time I want to switch rigs to play.

PBR my ass. maybe some isolated part of their pipeline uses some physically correct math, but the art clearly was never designed for it

The water in this game is the best I've seen in a video game. Amazing shading work.

Incredible physics as well, blowing shit up is very satisfying.

My framerate does not drop anywhere near as much as I expected even when there is a ton of stuff exploding left and right.

I may be alone in this but I'm far from unhappy with my performance.

Why did they change the controls so much compared to JC2?? The grappling hook/parachute bindings feel weird now. I liked it when it was F to grapple.

I've lost count of how many grenades I've accidentally thrown, haha.

Doesn't seem so. I can't get the game to sync any data whatsoever.

You're not alone. People are exaggerating left and right with JC3. I think that the game runs fine for what it does, I rarely go below 60 on my 980ti in 2560x1600 with everything on highest. Most other games of this Autumn are showing lower results.

ROTFL, updating to Game Ready 359.06, suggested for the game, made my average FPS -10 and introduced microstuttering.

Tried also PS4 version, for circa hour: jeez, it seems to run @30 FPS just in 'neutral situations'.

To be honest it is very common in PC threads to find people blowing things completely out of proportion and using terms that do not apply to the situation, there are issues with this PC version for sure (that damn flickering) but overall I think it is very well made.

In my opinion this game has a better visuals to performance ratio than Arkham Knight or Mad Max.

come on man, beating arkham knight in performance/visual return is hardly an accomplishment. mad max was also a retooled ps360 title that kind of got stuck in development hell so its also an uphill climb.
