Just got a 3DS. What all should I play?

Fire Emblem Awakening!! I'm addicted as hell to it right now. Along with that, I'm playing RE: Revalations and it's real good!

I recently got Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and I'm loving the game as well!

Edit: I have MH4 Ultimate as well, but I don't really have any friends to play with so that's just hanging in my digital library in my SD Card.
If you guys wanna add me to help out a newb!

This game has a very small, vocal, fanbase who should be ignored.

It's a shitty-to-control bore-fest with localization that really appeals to a certain set (the anime avatar set).

Most people find the dialogue cringe-worthy and the gameplay painful. Literally painful.

The dialogue is only figuratively painful. Thankfully.

There are so many other games more worthy of your time on the 3DS.

Disregarding that second sentence I have to agree.

They've gotten a bit forgotten, but the 3D Classics series had some worthwhile releases. They're the best places to play Kirby's Adventure and Kid Icarus in my opinion. Sega's releases are great too, and have a lot of effort put into them.

Nintendo's games on the system in general are pretty much all worth playing. Paper Mario Sticker Star's the one I would consider shying away from unless you can get it for really cheap. NSMB2 might also be something you skip, depending on how much you like the NSMB series. It's one of the weaker games in that series, imo.

I really liked Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call.

This is the question you should be asking before you buy a system.

  • Infinite Space (DS game)
  • Mega Man Zero Collection (DS Game)
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening
  • Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • Bravely Default
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
  • One of the following:
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
    Etrian Odyssey IV
    Shin Megami Tensei IV
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (New® 3DS only)

Eventually I'll get to my unplayed copy of KI:U and see what all the fuss is about. I love how divisive it is.
I think it all depends on if you like the gameplay of rail shooters and stuff like Sin & Punishment.

I personally don't and the story isn't enough to to justify playing through it if you don't like that style of game, to me at least.

All the Castlevania games on DS are great pick ups. Fire Emblem on 3DS was pretty good. Golden Sun on DS, but it's not difficult. Dragon Quest series too.

Lots of good RPGs on DS. I have a lot on VC like Batman and so forth. Batman I'd recommend playing on PC or Vita. I have Luigi's Mansion and SMT IV too.

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is a great game, one of my favorites. Portrait of Ruin was my 2nd favorite.

Skip the 3DS Castlevania if you cherish the style and aesthetics.

That's clearly how it managed to sell over a million copies. Your arguement makes even less sense when you consider it sold over a million over a long time, so it must have spread via good word of mouth and not instantly selling a ton on day one only to leave everyone disappointed. Seriously, stop assuming everyone agrees with you except a "very small, vocal, fanbase" when you have no actual evidence, and all the real evidence points otherwise

This.

Beware, people that suck at games will say it has bad controls.
No, it actually does have shit controls. Especially if you're a lefty. The air sections are tolerable and still fun. Many of the ground sections are absolutely brutal.

Still worth playing though because the game does almost everything else really well. It has fantastic overall presentation.

I just bought mine and got a lot of the staples already (Mario 3D Land, Ocarina, Majora, Etrian IV, Animal Crossing) but I need people to sell me on these, because I'm on the edge in regards to buying them:

Tomodachi Life

Fantasy Life

Story of Seasons

Can only speak towards Fantasy Life, but I really enjoyed it. Played almost 200 hours I think. If you like leveling, there are twelve classes that you can play as. They're all divided into three different categories: combat, crafting, and gathering. Combat you have stuff like paladin and mercenary, crafting you have stuff like blacksmith and tailor, and gathering you have stuff like angler and miner. Each life class has its own individual quests to level them up, but the nice thing is that you can often level multiple ones at at time and it's very easy to change lives so you can turn your points in to do so. So for example you can still chop trees or make blacksmith weapons while playing as a mercenary if you want to. You'll gain experience for the skills pertaining to those respective classes, and you can also fulfill the life specific quests should you meet the criteria as well. There's just a lot of synergy between lives as well. So as an example, you can catch a fish as an angler, cook it as a cook, and then eat it for stat boosts while fighting as a paladin, and so on.

It plays as a fairly basic action RPG for the most part. You walk around and attack monsters with your weapons with free movement. There are mounts you can get for traveling around though there is also a quick warp system in place as well. There's an ally system too, though it's not terrible involved. You can also play multiplayer with people online, which is nice, but most everything is manageable solo. Equipment changes are reflected on your character. The crafting requires variations on the same minigame, but it doesn't really get too annoying. Great soundtrack too, Nobuo Uematsu is the composer. The story is kind of lame but inoffensive. You can largely ignore it, or just speed through it to continue doing what you want to do.

I don't know, I'd watch some videos if you haven't already to see if you like how the game looks. If you're looking for a time sink, I'd say you could definitely do worse. I really enjoyed my time playing it at least, it was one of my favorite games last year.

3D Sega Classics. M2 consistently shows how shoddy Nintendo's own virtual console offerings are, again and again.

Etrian looks "meh" to me from the screenshots. Sell me on it.
All of the Etrian games have demos that are literally just the first chunk of the game. They even let you transfer your progress to the full game and start right where you left off. Try those to see if you like them.

IV's always recommended as the most beginner-friendly, though, and some people really overstate the difficulty.

This.

Beware, people that suck at games will say it has bad controls.
And how do you know that the OP isn't going to be one of those people?

I personally loved the game's localization, but thought the controls were trying to do too much relative to the system's controls – the most egregious oversight being the inherit handicap lefties have. If I wanted a game of a similar type that actually uses its control scheme well
and that's outright better, regardless of control scheme
, I'd just play Sin and Punishment 2. If I wanted one that was still on the 3DS, I'd play 3D Space Harrier.

Well it does hurt to play on my XL. Maybe it's much more comfortable for the standard models. I wouldn't call them "bad controls" but it's certainly not for everyone.

For the OP: you already have a good variety to start with, so enjoy what you have for now. When you're done please don't miss out on Zelda: LBW and all those awesome 3D classics from Nintendo and Sega. You already mentioned 3D Land, great choice.

I've already played every game in the series, so with that in mind, how does DDD stack up to birth by sleep (best one in the series to me).
As far as the plot, it's laughably conviluted. As far as gameplay goes, it's actually quite fun and the Flowmotion traversal is quick but makes the platforming meaningless.

I will say--even though I really liked KI's controls, lefty's should stay away! The game was clearly not designed to be played left handed.

Someone asked if the bolding was necessary but edited their post. I just said to beware. Check it out first.
Yeah, sorry about that. I was being unnecessarily confrontational and it was uncalled for.

Literally had this same thread yesterday, but I'll paste my recommendations. Here's a couple more unsung titles:

Kirby Triple Deluxe is a must-play.
Ace Combat Assault Horizon Legacy is a awesome arcade dogfighting game that can be had for real cheap.
Shinobi is ace if you're into butt-hard 2D action.
Professor Laytongames are all awesome if you're into brainteasers. Over 20 hours gameplay in each installment.
Didn't think I'd get into Animal Crossing: New Leaf, but I did. Easy and relaxing to spend 30 minutes a night gathering bugs for cash.
Plenty of RPGs but the only one I've completed so far is SMT Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers. Nifty old-school dungeon crawling. Nothing overly exciting but it's good comfort gaming.

If only those 3DS Dragon Quest games got localized.

I'm going to go ahead and say Kid Icarus Uprising again, just because the recommendations need to rightfully outweigh the people saying no. One of the best titles on the system.

What directly comes to my mind:

  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
  • Mario Kart 7 (really good MK, looks good, plays nice)
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening (I haven´t completed it yet, I am not a strategy fan but I like FE)
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf (tons of lovely characters and funny dialogues)
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (cool atmosphere, even though I prefered the first one)
  • Pokémon X/Y (my first Pokemon and I still enjoy playing it)
  • Tomodachi Life (so weird, so good)
  • Ocarina of Time
  • Majoras Mask
  • Professor Layton (all 3 games)
  • Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright
  • Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies
  • Super Mario 3D Land
  • Attack of the friday monsters (I would have hoped we would get more little games like this)
  • Pushmo

With "leveling multiples at the same time" you had my curiosity. With Nobuo you had my attention.

Will definitely look at videos now.

Fire Emblem Awakening, Pokémon ORAS XY, Zelda Ocarina/Majora...
Those Are The better for me, but 3DS has so many fucking Games...
