Just got a Sega Genesis, any game recommendations?

Ristar
Pulseman
Alien Soldier
Gunstar Heroes
Dynamite Headdy
Vectorman
Chakan
ThunderForce IV
Gaires
Legend of Oasis
Aladdin
Street Fighter II Champion Edition

Thanks for the replies guys! I've got a pretty good idea of what to look for.

Has anyone played any of the Valis games at all? I found a copy of Syd of Valis but apparently it's not good compared to the actual Valis 2.
To be honest I found Valis 1 to be mediocre. And some of the music loops are maddeningly short (fire level made me mute game) And the gameplay wasn't that much fun. I know my kid sister loved Syd of Valis (SD Valis) when she was 5 because it has an invincibility code and was super cute visually. Honestly, the only Genesis Valis I'd recommend is III.

Alisia Dragoon is the better choice for a Valis fix IMO. But III is pretty good.

Skitchin'

/yw

Fuck yeah OP get Skitchin'. Shit's like Road Rash but on roller blades.

Also, someone else mentioned Crusader of Centy, which is basically a Zelda game. Dope as fuck.

Virtual Bart was also great, although I think that wasn't exclusive to genenis.

Well, I've never seen this thread made in regard to this system. First time for everything, I guess?

Anyway:

Gunstar Heroes
Sonics (obvs)
Ranger-X
Bio-Hazard Battle
Thunder Force II-IV
X-Men 2

There's tons more, but I'm not sure what prices are like these days.

Haunting starring polterguy

Greendog the surfer dude

I was like 9 when I was playing these. Your thread has hit me right in the nostalgia OP!

How has not one person recommended Aero the Acrobat. Get those games. And get Boogerman. And get earthworm Jim 1 and 2.

Oh yeah, I played one of the Splatterhouse games a long time ago and thought that was awesome. Again, it's been years and years so I'm not sure how it held up.

I played the library both back in the day and just in the last couple years. The that have aged the best for me are:

Shining in the Darkness
Shining Force
Shining Force II
Phantasy Star II

Ghouls n Ghosts
Sagaia
Slap Fight
Fire Shark

The first four are fine in emulation, the second four are best with real hardware, a real CRT, and an official Sega controller (preferably the arcade pad)

Rocket Knight is a no brainier. Also:
Streets of Rage 2
MUSHA if you can afford it
Castle of Illusion
Adventures of Batman & Robin
Comic Zone
Elemental Master
Fatal Labyrinth
Pier Solar
Alien Solider
Gunstar Heroes
Shinobi 3
Strider
Mega Turrican
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Hyperstone Heist

Hey GAF, in my black friday shopping I picked up a Model 1 Genesis from a pawn shop and I got the Sonic Collection (1,2 & Mean Bean Machine) and Phantasy Star IV, but I was wondering what else I should pick up?

I've got my eye on the Valis series and Gun Star Heroes so far. I'm not a huge brawler fan so Streets of Rage is out but I'm open to pretty much anything else.

Can't believe i'm recommending an EA game, but definitely pick up Blades of Vengeance!!! The game is basically a side scrolling Dark Souls!!

Here's the very active Sega Genesis community thread, OP:

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=509554

came to post this!

Unfortunately the best versions of some games are Japanese and really expensive, eg Vampire Killer and Contra The Hard Corps.

ehhhh this statement is very much subjective, honestly

Rocket Knight Adventures. It's my favorite Genesis game and a total classic.

oh, RKA? man, i always forget that one

THEYRE NOT DEAD BRO
just...less busy

Heh, I came here to recommend Gunstar Heroes, but the OP beat me to the punch. Great game, a true classic.

Also check out X-Men 2: Clone Wars. Nightcrawler is so much fun.

Shining in the Darkness
Revenge of Shinobi
Shinobi 3
Shadow Dancer
Dick Tracy
Golden Axe
Phantasy Star 2
Castlevania Bloodlines
Contra Hard Corps
Sunset Riders
Thunder force 3
Gaires
MUSHA
Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles
Streets of Rage 1-3
Super Ghouls n Ghosts
Afterburner 2

Castlevania: Bloodlines, Ranger X, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Contra: Hard Corps are probably the best on the system. Alien Soldier is the best on the system, but if you're sticking to buying real carts, it might be a problem to get.

Honestly, I'd say it's not subjective and is just flat-out wrong. The only difference between US and JP CV Bloodlines is that you take slightly less damage in the Japanese version, and the life meter you get in JP Hard Corps is overkill. In both cases, the more dangerous US versions fit in with the rest of their respective series.

Thunder Force 4 aka Lightening Force (spelled like that). I picked it up at a yard sale this year and it is practically my GOTY. The music sounds awesome on a real genesis and the game is just amazingly well made. It's not super expensive either.

Shadowrun on Genesis was one of my favourites. It's a different game compared to the SNES version so don't go by that comparison if you've played the SNES version.

Ignore Adventures of Batman and robin suggestions.

It may have alot of fancy special effects, but it's a boring ass, overly difficult shooter with really long levels. I tried playing through it and quit on the overhead airplane level.

I suggest TMNT Hyperstone Heist tho. It's like a best of TMNT 1 & 2 arcade with a couple extra graphics thrown in.

Rocket Knight, Landstalker, Monster World IV, Phantasy Star 2-4, Ristar, Flashback, Beyond Oasis, Comix Zone, Warsong, Beavis and Butthead

-----> Streets of Fucking Rage 2 <-----

Oh, and that cute lil shooter with the cartoon planes. I think it was Gadget Twins or something along those lines.

ignore this man - challenging but interesting game

please OP don't forget Vectorman

I've been on a huuuuge Vectorman kick lately for some reason. It's such an incredible, underrated game. Some of the atmospheres it creates with its level design and OST are an absolute joy to experience. I adore it along with Vectorman 2, and you can snag them relatively cheap.

lol, this whole post is so wrong it hurts.

AOBAR is an amazingly well-crafted game on pretty much every level.

Lots of great recommendations here. Unfortunately the retro gaming scene has gotten expensive, so if there a a few games that are way out of your price range, I'd look into a Mega Everdrive. I feel that a good retro collection is a mix of real, complete carts and an Everdrive. That way you have all your bases covered without having to sell your house.

Join us in the dedicated MegaDrive/Genesis thread OP. It's where all the cool and attractive collectors hang. ;) Just watch the rabbit hole on the way in. It's a doozey but it'll make an RGB fiend of you like the rest of us

Soundtrack alone is enough to look past some of the games faults.

One of THE best video game soundtracks of all time.

I actually don't mind how long some of the levels are because the music works with them to create a hypnotic effect. Every track is so damn good.

honestly was my exact experience with it. But holy shit that soundtrack.

edit: and if you're gonna get a Genesis game just for the soundtrack you need Thunder Force 4 anyways motherfucker.
