Just when I thought I couldn't dislike Will Smith any more...

He's being real its not his obligation to be humble or whatever the hell he would have to do to make you "like him".

You want him to pretend he's not will smith? Are we gonna act like he's not an A list superstar mogul?

Would the only acceptable answer in your eyes be " I'm just grateful to be here " to everything?

Like who's more of a twat the billionaire who's been a worldwide superstar for most of his life talking about how a box office failure shattered his ego or the guy who makes a thread on neogaf talking about how much you judge him and just NEEDING to let everyone know about your opinion on him? You're being judgmental and insecure and you've never even met the guy. You look worse than he ever could

I dont get what is so bad about this comments, there are times in life in which our failures make us questions ourselves and the path we take even tho we made all the correct choices. The scientology stuff is a bit nutty, but the rest tells the story of flawed person learning to define himself by how he is rather than by his success.

Exactly. What he said sounded great. People just want to hate on something and since he is a celebrity, everything they do is a potential reason to shit on him.

It's worded in typical Hollywood speak, but nothing wrong with the sentiment. You ever fail at work? How did that make you feel? I imagine this would be akin to a CEO who was restructured into a lower position of power. It's got to sting to realize you're not top dog any longer.

Not that I'm going to cry any tears for one of the richest people in the world, but the sentiment is something most people will feel at some point in their lives.
Pretty much

did anyone listen to the this american life podcast last week? the one about internet trolls? there was this one really assholish troll who said he did it because his victim was too happy with her self.

well maybe that's a common thread :P
Got a link?

None of that is very surprising for a guy who got famous and rich early and kept it up for a long time. Lots of artists have had a hard time separating themselves from the art they make, and seeing themselves as failures if their work suddenly takes a critical or commercial hit.

A lot of normal people have a hard time separating themselves from their work and seeing themselves as failures if things aren't going as planned.

I actually think these comments are pretty level-headed and show a great deal of self-awareness.

Also, learning that some people deeply dislike him is news to me. What did he ever do to earn that hate?

When I started browsing Neogafs Off topic forum many years ago, I remember one of the first threads was about how Will Smith was liked by all, and he was the most bankable actor of all.

His fresh prince legacy is terrific, and it means a lot to a lot of people. He made really fun films, he re-vitalized himself in many ways. Men in Black was a lot of fun. I remember it being the epitome of 90s science fiction look (the friendly rated PG-13 pop-rap), the black tinted glasses, and the sterile clean set pieces. It was a fun movie.

Everyone saw him as a serious actor in Ali, and he had a seriously impressive and likeable demeanor in Bad Boys II. I was shocked how ripped physically he got for that part. That was one of the most entertaining summer blockbuster action flicks I remember in the last 20 years.

With Pursuit of Happyness, everybody raved about how good it was, and how great an actor both he and his kid was, and nobody seemed to have a problem with Jaden then.

It wasn't until later, with the whole scientology thing I heard people saying really crazy stuff about him. I recall him making a comment about how he said no to the part of Django in Django Unchained because it wasn't big enough.
That sounds strange and not satisfying. I am not exactly sure why. Maybe it's because that was such a bad ass movie, and wishing for Christopers part to be less would have made the film less good.

Is M. Night Shamayalayaya done in hollywood? After Earth and Avatar, how is his standing in hollywood?

Oh please. You have zero idea how this correlates to his relationship with Scientology. People love to dogpile on that when anyone has been involved with it. Yeah, it's wacky, we get it. Beyond that, who gives a damn? We'll never know what impact the church has had on anyone at his level. That being said, still interested in seeing that documentary that was screened at Sundance.

A pretty big impact if he's talking in Scientologese in a fucking Vanity Fair interview.

This man is so self-absorbed to the point of being out of touch with reality...

What in the fuck kind of nonsense is he on about? Fucking hell this dude is so deluded and full of himself.

yea......dont see how this would make anyone dislike a person...i dont see anything bad in what he said. he is essentially saying he is happy in his place even if his movies flop. what is bad about that?

edit: i guess this opinion has been said by others itt

"Just when I thought I couldn't dislike Will Smith any more...I invent new reasons to keep the flame burning"

That's the gist of the Op. There is nothing wrong with his comments, and there is even a little something most people could learn from them.

I came into this thread more than ready to laugh at some wacky Scientology nonsense but only saw a celebrity who was used to winning realizing that a loss isn't the end of the world.

Oh well.

I was expecting something outrageous. What I found was an actual useful realization this man found in his life and about which many people (as well as myself) should think about more often.

The passing realization may not translate into that big a difference in his long-term life, but the words have nothing wrong in them.

Sounds like words from some sort of quack religion.
It might be; I don't know enough about Scientology.

But it's also a pretty common productivity mantra, even if the phrasing is weird. And it's pretty accurate.

If you want to achieve something, it's often counter-productive to tell yourself, for example, "my goal is to be making $100,000 in 5 years." It's too nebulous and doesn't give you any action items to follow. Instead, give yourself goals that put you on the path towards that result, like "my goal is to update my resume every 2 months," or "to apply to 3 jobs per week," etc.

I'm sure Will Smith is weird for other reasons, as I imagine many Hollywood mega-stars are. But the "goal orientation vs. path orientation" is just a different phrasing of a good piece of advice.

Woke up yesterday to a Kanye west hating thread, Now today, it's Will Smith. smh.

Come on, man. the guy got an ego, so what. You can hate him, but I don't even see anything wrong with what he said.
Dude, could of have said it better but it's simply just him saying he got a reality check, that's it.

I've never gotten why actors get tied to a bad box office in the first place. Choose the wrong movie, and suddenly an actor who's proven more than capable plenty of times is supposed to be terrible.

It's wrong thinking.

They're filming his new movie Concussion directly infront of my girlfriend's dad's home. Like literally right in front. He's got pictures to show and has met Smith a couple times at this point.

Says he's a nice dude and the production staff are all cool too.

Uhh, I would imagine this is common with quite a few actors? Flops can end/derail careers and it would be a shock to someone who is not used to having a failed project after a ridiculously successful career.

You're right but I think when your entire concept of self is based on your accomplishments it would be really hard to disconnect

Wild Wild West had a production budget of 170 million dollars. Just looking at the numbers for both in terms of total box office versus production budgets for both movies, Wild Wild West looks to be the bigger failure dollars wise.

VHS and the immediate explosion of DVD sales post PS2 release made the gap between budget and final gross much greater. It wasn't a flop.

His job is to be a movie star and he couldn't bring people into the movie and he got depressed. It's like if you had an office job and got a poor review on a task you were given one time out of say a hundred other tasks that you succeeded in.

His life is literally dependent about fame. "Have to have #1 film, have to be star of film..."

Damn, what a douche.

uuuhhhh thats what an actor should be aspiring?

Is calling a model employee that wins 'employee of the month' for doing his job well a 'douche'?

His confidence was shaken because a movie with a lot riding on it didn't do well and he says that it's ok and money & ratings aren't everything.... and you say you hate him more?

This is exactly what I took from it.

When did speaking with self confidence and respect become a bad thing ?

Will Smith became a millionaire before the age of 20; of course he's going to think highly of himself just like anyone else would.

I see nothing wrong with his comments.

I'm sure there are actors that aspire to, you know, be good actors rather than "stars".

If they have to actively pursue the accolade of "Employee of the Month" to justify their existence then I'd suspect they are a bit of an insufferable cunt.

isn't that just human nature?

If you do good at something, youd' want to keep doing good at that (straight A student. star sports player, someone that gets platinum trophies in games etc), and if you fail, you feel bad.

Goal orientation vs. Path orientation is common in discussions. "It isn't the end, but your journey to it that matters".
It sounds like some shit HR would tell you when you're old and they don't want to give you a raise any more.

eh I don't see how he's full of himself. Before After Earth there was a lot of pressure on him and his movies being number 1. He never really had any major failures so didn't know how he would do if one failed and now he realizes it's ok to have a bad movie.

Honestly I'm sorta glad After Earth bombed. Really wanted to see him do more comedies and non-blockbuster roles so could be a good thing.
They're small cameos but he was in Anchorman 2 and Winter's Tale following After Earth (although I'm obviously going by release date and not when he actually shot them). Maybe he's gonna mix in those roles along with doing blockbusters.

This is nowhere near Jaden tier metaphysical bullshit.
