Kay Plays |OT|

I'm not quite sure why she's handicapping herself though, I guess she's played through enough Souls games she wants to try something new but not using a bow for the Storm Beasts is kinda just making it harder on yourself for 'reasons.'
I always used to run by them too because they are hard to hit at times since they are often so far away and constantly move.

Also the last (?) episode.

Killing Patches, ha, I found that funny. Always kinda wanted to do it myself but I feel bad killing NPC's just because of the 'what if' factor. He has that voice of a little wheeler dealer, stab you in the back, market trader. Like 'what? It wasn't me.'

I love the English accents in Demon's Souls are regional, gives them way more character I instantly feel like I know what archetype they're going for, or maybe I'm just projecting being from the UK myself.

I didn't mind the World Tendency stuff too much if not for the fact
that your tendencies automatically get synchronized with the median tendencies of the other players when you play online. It's a pain in the ass to trigger those pure white and pure black events as they are but you are forced to play in offline mode most of the time as well. They should have added an option for you to choose if you want to synchronize or not.

I still can't believe you can parry Black Knight great arrows. Probably would never have known about it had she not done so. Amazing.

Okay, I have to say, is Kay 70+ years old? I don't think I've heard 'gives me the willies' since 1940's TV reruns. What next, 'Gee willikers'? Am I in an episode of Scooby Doo? ha, I'm only poking fun, tis funny to hear :P

Good be she picked that line up from Benhart in DS II.

"See that statue? Gives me the willies ..."

Ah yes, fighting the Armor Spider for the first time is always an ass kicking, If you don't have proper gear that fight can be a real pain. She does't have the purple flame shield which makes the fight significantly easier.

I love that projectile gauntlet when trying to get to the Armor Spider. It was pretty novel at the time, though the Gwyndolin fight in Dark Souls greatly expanded on it. Still awesome.

Gotta love dem wholesome curses.

Nanny Kay, plays us a tune on the ole Joanna?

I really enjoyed watching her take on the Adjudicator like it was nothing. Sharp contrast to when Brad was fighting it on Giant Bomb. :)

I've forgotten just how much more smooth DeS is in motion compared to its sequels (at least on the PS3). Still love that Nexus music.

She's trying to put a unique spin on every build she does. She used magic extensively for her DS1 run and bows in both games, so she tries to avoid either in DeS.

Each Souls game has a lot of viable builds and playstyles (from magic to miracles to pyromancy to bows to all the different melee variants, with sword and board, dual-wielding, two-handed - swords/axes/lances/spears/twinblades - all feeling completely different from another)... though the scope obviously gets better and broader with later games in the series.

Basically, since all three games are tough but manageable, it's fine to mix things up and keep it interesting for the viewers (and herself)! :)

Heh, she let slip an episode or so ago that she was having friends over to play bridge.

What's next? Shuffleboard?

Pretty sure it was the same episode where she said she was in her early thirties. <_< I seriously do lazy excerpts of what is said in the videos.

Updated: It was definitely last episode where she said her age "range". o.o

Don't want to hijack this thread or anything, but if you're interested in watching more people play the Souls games who aren't masquerading behind a fake persona, my girlfriend is currently making her way through Dark Souls for her first time. Here's one of the more recent episodes: http://youtu.be/m27KMZEyXA0?list=PLlIEOF8cuRfJVHG9nT-AbANYsv37tuRCh

I'll give it a watch but I generally stay away from girlfriend let's plays.

playing blind is the ONLY way to play these games

Unless your speedrunning.

After some weeks of hiatus I got back into DS2 PC. Listening to Kay in the background while doing PvP or other stuff is great! Currently fighting the Ancient Dragon. <3

Kay's parrying skills are awesome, she could be an absolute beast in PvP with some training.

couldn't watch her past walkthroughs because I'm not too interested in DaS2 and don't want DaS spoiled, but now I think I'm gonna watch this one.

Am I wrong for assuming that you could attack the spider's legs in the corner to drop it?

edit: This world tendency nonsense seems hella unnecessary.

I think you could play 1-1 with a blind fold. Hold your shield up all the time, you can hear when someone hits you, etc.

Has Kay ever mentioned Bloodborne?

The problem isn't much dying, as much as it is moving in the world and progressing spatially.

And no, not that i remember.
She's on GAF now though, so maybe she'll pop in to say hi.

I can't remember if the legs take damage but the spider drops regularly in a pattern as long as you stay close. Dodge the fireballs, block the pincer attacks and when it has a little seizure wait for it to drop then rush in and get a few good attacks in - run far away when the AoE builds up, rinse and repeat.

All the tendency events are one thing in the whole of the Souls series I doubt most people could ever fully see on a blind first playthrough, I certainly didn't, they aren't explained very well but Kay worked out pretty good what the deal is with them. Playing online also completely messes with tendency so if you wanted to see all the sidequests and events, you would have to play offline. I'm doing just that atm myself. As a mechanic I like the idea of tendency events - changing the world with your performance and progress, but I dislike having to play offline to ensure I get them, glad they dropped that. It can also get a bit gimmicky doing them all when for example
you go into a world and revive/kill yourself repeatedly to get PBWT this isn't very immersive imo. I guess the idea was to use PvP and co-op as the main way of effecting WT.

Well I doubt you could do it first time, but after you've played it a bunch maybe.

The real problem would be finding the switches to open the gate. You can just run along walls most of the level, but I can't remember if you can hear the switches when the animation is playing to know you did it right.

If you were really good, you could even use items. If you know the order in which you get them, they're assigned to the 'belt' automatically until you fill it.

The FAQ reminds me, I've always wondered if her boyfriend suggested the game as a joke. She said at the start of the DS videos that he suggested it and she didn't know anything about it, and that she never played gamepad games. Presumably the idea was she'd be shit and die constantly, which would be a source of amusement for the audience. Little did he know her parents were shot for a necklace outside the theatre that night, and one faithful day she found that cave...

Kay plays games a little differently then most on YouTube. She plays without knowing anything about the game and goes into it with a strong sense of exploration. It's amazing how she takes in details and pieces the story together just by paying attention and respectfully appreciating the detail in the environment. Watching her play makes you learn new things about the game that you may have not realized before. Watching a blind play on the Souls game is really interesting since the games never hold your hand. You're going to fail, but given enough persistence you pull through. I love to see how she figures out how to proceed and defeat the challenges all on her own.

Don't a lot of people play games like that? I still don't understand what's so special about her.

Watching this makes me want a Demon's Souls remastered so much.

I just want a way to re-experience this incredible masterpiece yet again.

I don't know if the world is ready for 1080p60 Demon's Souls.

but I am

The reason why I think it might happen is SOTC collection happened this gen.

The art is undoubtedly some of the best ever made but I still think some visual aspects need to be touched up.

The weird fog/shimmering effects and some annoying filters could be removed.

As well as 1080p 60 of course.

No obnoxious commentary, a lot of attention to details, plus a good ability in putting together the obscure lore of the Souls game together without help, is what i liked about the playthrough.
I have no idea how unique that is, because i don't follow many let's plays, as i said, but i don't really care either.

The leap she did from starting in the Dark Souls' cell without even being able to control the analog sticks properly, to actually being much better than me the first time I played the game, was certainly something very, very impressive.
Her adaptive skills are great.
