Kay Plays |OT|

Saw the ep.

The King Doran punishment was the best part, it happened to me in the same way.

"I can take this guy.... oops, i guess not"

also lol @ her wild speculations as to why she lost one faith point. :P
Admittedly, that message on screen is a pretty good indicator of what happened.

A couple of beautiful Souls moments in this episode, getting downgraded just one level is enough for you to lose the spell you were relying the most on or a NPC who turns out to be much more dangerous than he appears.
Biorr still fighting the good fight lol

Is there a non tedious way to fight that wyvern, even? I remember with both the red and blue wyverns in this game, i had to spend a goo amount of time cheaping at them with bow and arrow.

Woah what happened? Episode 33, all worlds are black. Some sort of black tendency event? I know From did these from time to time so people could see more of the content without actually having to game the stupid system.

I thought it was the fact that she died about forty times in human form. (While using one time revival)

Getting soul sucked and the realisation of not being able to use revival anymore is one of the best moments of the series.

This one is finishing up strong, Boletaria is my favorite area in the game. Gotta watch that Biorr, if you don't help him he'll plunk you in the head. :p

Those dreglings moving the lift is neat, I just noticed that on my most recent playthrough.

I'm enjoying seeing her use the moonlight sword as I've never used it before. Being so light and ignoring shields are huge pluses.

Kay can be pretty observant, but, at times painfully unaware. She didn't realize he's adsorbing her soul level.
Well, the concept of losing soul levels doesn't exist in the other two games.

Yes, it does say SOUL ABSORBED when he hits you with that one attack, but making the connection between that attack and only having 35 faith isn't super obvious. I certainly didn't know Allant had that ability until I read it online.

Wow! Biorr straight up shoots her from 10 feet away with his crossbow @ 5:53

edit:

Whew. Good play through! Thanks for playing, Kay!

Demon's was my first, and most definitely my favorite.
Love Dark Souls as well, but not quite as much as Demon's.. and Dark 2.. well.. I can't be bothered to touch it again after finishing it, DLC be damned.
Your play through confirmed it wasn't just nostalgia that I had for Demon's. It really tops the others in the ways I believe most important.

About the Demon's ending. I don't think we have to assume cycles here.. Cycles is a theme of nature.. things will continue to happen, but never the exact same way.
Just because Dark Souls 2, that imposter Allant of a game, clubs you over the head with it's cyclical theme doesn't mean we have to infer that from the other games.

In Demon's, with the good ending there's now a more powerful than ever monumental to keep things in check. That's way different than the cast of choir boys who had the job the first time around.
It doesn't explicitly infer that it's going to happen again. Next time some asshole wants to awaken the old one, you, the most powerful being in the apparent world, kick his fucking ass.
Sure, it could happen again, but it'll be a new playing field if it did. Maybe some deviant would discover a new way to tap into the old one's power.... Maybe YOU would ditch the old one and just reign supreme over the world with no one to stop you,now that the soul arts are gone and there are no powerful beings running around.

If you go with the other ending, you take the power for yourself, maybe you become a sloppy mess of a king like Wannabe Allant, maybe you control the old one and lead an army of wicked demon's, and continue to consume the world with fog.. You can kill the Maiden, who at that point, was immortal thanks to the Nexus binding.. Maybe you team up with Freke and give him access to your soul bank. Think of the amazing spells he could craft.. Maybe even to better serve mankind.

In Dark Souls, you could say there are cycles in keeping the Kiln of the First Flame lit. If you follow the word of Frampt, you're sort of duped into doing the will of the Lords, which is to carry on Gwyn's legacy by keeping the power in the hands of the gods, or some such thing. I wouldn't call it a cycle so much as just tending to a flame. It's not the same thing over and over again. It's not kingdoms rising and falling and a bunch of bullshit. It's just, 'oh hey, you wanna throw something on that fire for me? 'k thanx bye'

The alternate ending in Dark Souls is one where you take power from the gods, and presumably give it to men, and perhaps whatever disease and curse may linger around them.. or just keep it for yourself.. Perhaps you kept all the power, led an army of Primordial Serpents and hollows, and hunted down the gods.

Lots of fun potential for your imagination to run with in any of these endings.. or you could take the Dark Souls 2 approach, the lazy approach, and just beat it into yourself from the beginning till the end of the game, that no matter what you do, nothing matters.. It's so meta, because it's like, why am I even playing this game?

So that's my stance on the cycle stuff.

I just noticed how similar the Old King and Thomas sound...

Stockpile Thomas = King Allant.

Thomas the King: The True Boss of Demon's Souls

WATCH OUT, KAY!

Kay is probably the only person I've ever seen who didn't go straight ahead into the Old One. :D

edit: wtf at "Wannabe Allant". That's not only a terrible name, but just completely wrong and informs false conclusions about the thing you fight in the old one. Also robbed Kay of that cool moment of realisation. The Asian translation has been really bad, but that one might just take the cake.

edit²: good playthrough! Will definitely check the channel and GAF for updates on what her next series will be.

Epic finale.
Too bad for the shit translation and i would have really lied her try the other ending.

it has been an incredibly fun ride, now here's hoping she chooses a fun game next (i realize it's a subjective thing).
i gotta be honest, i'm glad she put away Fez.

Silent... Hill... 2

I can't think of something I even want to see her play besides something methodical like that.

Hrm... To be honest, I might like watching her play some heavily modded Skyrim. Mods leaning toward realism, survival, more deadly enemies, etc.

Might be cool to watch her play some FTL.

Oh man.. LA MULANA. That could be good.

Oddworld might be fitting for her.

Portal?

I'm sure she'd dig The Swapper, but being stumped by puzzles 'live' might be a lot of pressure.

Hrm.

So yeah, here's my proposed list:

  • Silent Hill, 2, 3 / REmake
  • FTL
  • La Mulana
  • Oddworld Abe's Oddysee
  • Survival/Difficulty/Realism Modded Skyrim
  • Portal/2 if she hasn't played already
  • The Swapper

But not sure if the puzzle-esque games would go well.
I didn't watch her play Fez, but it didn't sound particularly interesting.

My vote definitely first goes to those survival horror games. They play so much like Demon's it's just destiny!

I guess I could see her enjoying RE4.

I don't know. What do you guys think?

Also, is there a place on neogaf where we can make these suggestions to Kay?

Haha Wannabe Allant! This translation has a bit of an old Godzilla movie feel to it.

Now that this series is over it's time for everyone to pressure Kay into buying a PS4 for Bloodborne.

I already suggested Silent Hill long before she was done with Dark Souls 2, but she has a bad anxiety response to horror games (she mentioned it again in the old monk ep) so that's a no go.

Hopefully Bloodborne isn't too scary.

I would like to see her try Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, nice worlds, exploration and cryptic lore, and they're both fairly short.

But they're not on PC (ps3) and there is some platformng, which she doesn't seem to enjoy.

As she's not willing to play Silent Hill, and she wants a PC game, and the Fallouts/ESs would be boring as hell, I demand Psychonauts next, or The Witcher 2 maybe.

There's absolutely no convincing her then?

edit: I mean I heard her say she won't do it while playing Demon's, but I felt the same way while playing Silent Hill. That's the intended effect.
Nothing to be embarrassed about.

Those games are made to make you feel like that. Perfectly normal.. Hopefully that helps.

Eh some people have that reaction to horrors.

I love horrors personally, and started to consume them really young (like 7 or so), so i guess i'm a bit desensitized, but i know some people that have a REALLY bad physical reaction to them, due to stress.
Not even the fun jumpy one, just crippling anxiety.
I'm assuming she has a similar reaction, given her own description.

And as far as horror games go, i think Silent Hill are the absolute worst, in my opinion (in a good sense i mean).

She handled Latria though, she could probably handle something more pulpy and silly like Resident Evil 4, dunno.

better question: is there no convincing you she's not interested? :) ...

Shadow of the Colossus might be a bit too empty for her investigative urges. Also, she said she wanted to play her next game on PC.

So no horror eliminates RE and SH. La Mulana is way too obtuse, no human can reasonably be expected to pick up on its random bs. Portal 2 could be cool, but I don't know her stance on FPS games. In that vein, maybe something like Bioshock?

I'm trying to think of other PC games that could appeal to her... maybe LA Noire?

Sure, I was hoping to hear her expound on the subject to see if it's just her gut reaction that says no, or if it's a definite, "sorry, can't and won't do it".

Most people express similar reactions to horror games or movies, but will still have a good time if they sit down for the experience. My girlfriend for example. I'm sure you horror fans can relate.

I think it's worth pressing at least once to her because it really would be right up her alley if she warmed up to the idea.

So Yuria, didn't she go to her tower, but just happened to not be wearing the Official's Hat at that moment?

Yeah she took it off not long before the tower because switching out the silver coronet meant there wasn't enough mp to cast one time revival

Thing is, she has been asked in the Youtube comments several times, and has responded several times.

Silent Hill 2 is my favorite game of all time man, i would love to see her play it, so i feel you, but it is what it is.

She should definitely play Silent Hill 2.She has to.

That game is more moody and atmospheric than it is outright "scary".There are hardly any cheap scares in there.

The game is fundamentally built on exploration and discovery of its amazingly dark and disturbing world.

In many respects its similar to playing a souls game.Albeit a more narrative driven one.I hope she tries it a least before deciding not to play it.

Now Silent Hill 3 I wouldn't recommend. The game is outright horrific, bloody and gory. The sound design and art design are a lot more aggressive and the game has more scares.

what about skyrim?
Skyrim is incredibly long though (and tedious, but that's just my personal opinion :P)

She already tried playing Silent Hill and it didn't work out, as mentioned above.

Plus Silent Hill 2 is atmospheric, but let's not fool ourselves, it's fucking scary as hell, too.

I mean, this is the soundtrack.

She should definitely play Silent Hill 2.She has to...

smh :) ...

strongly suggest the 'silent hill!' faction get together, find a brother/sister/cousin/grandmother that've never played the games, & produce a blind 'let's play' featuring them. pretty sure it'd provide at least a certain amount of entertainment :) ...

now, my pet suggestion?: metal gear solid 2. would love to see kay's take on classic kojima (plus the game features some great bosses)...

i don't think MG is a great choice for a let's play.

Trying to come up with a new game she might like and one that checks similar boxes to the souls series isn't easy.

Just a reminder that the games, even though influential, are still pretty unique in the marketplace.

I still say LA Noire.

I blame Kojima.

We were dormant, but then he fired up things again.

Some games have pseudo detective stuff, like assassins creed, batman or murdered: soul suspects. But they don't actually require any thought or deductive reasoning to complete or understand, just mindlessly following the breadcrumbs laid out is enough.

Maybe a puzzle game really is the solution.

Point 'n' click adventures?

Broken Age?
