Kid asks for a ps4 and gets more than he bargained for

Probably ended up getting it anyway.

Not sure why they'd think it's funny to punish him like that for bad grades when his family probably could've done a better job being involved in his schooling. My family always asked for progress reports and report cards throughout the year. If I slipped, I'd get punished for it then and ran through lessons at home instead of having free time. I definitely wouldn't get humiliated in front of family and now the internet.

People outside the family shouldn't see this shit. They're scumbags for putting it up on the Internet for people to see and whoever's yelling in that video sounds fucking mental.

When I was in 2nd grade I stole an item from my classroom. My mother made me go in front of the entire school and admit it and apologize. Guess what? I'm better off for it.

I see no issue with this.

The kid looks too young anyway for even a cruel lesson to sink in and do any good. Seems like the parents really did it because they knew this stunt is a meme for internet videos - fake christmas presents for kids.

I don't like it. If the kid has bad grades and don't get a PS4, what is the purpose of teasing him with the box wrapped at Christmas? It's fucked up.

Way different from forcing you to face the music for what you did.

Some people just don't treat kids as people, with their own hopes and feelings. Yuk.

Please read up on what child abuse is and stop exaggerating. It's a joke that you would call that video child abuse.

funny, i know a bitter old man you just the other day recounted a story from his childhood where all he got was coal while he watched his siblings get gift after gift. impacted him for life. now imagine that feel magnified by the knowledge your embarrassment has been posted on youtube and viewed countless times the world over.

it may not fit the traditional definition of child abuse but i'll be damned if it doesnt have similar psychological effects.

How old is the kid? 8? You don't really get grades until 4th grade that matter. It's all about behavior and ability to focus prior to that.

I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure 4th graders are graded on their homework and tests.

Ok. You don't like it. But can you prove it isn't effective?

Bad grades hardly cause problems for anyone but the kid who gets them so I wouldn't equate the two. You were made to apologize to the ones you caused trouble for basically.

Then again I still sort of resent every kind of punishment I got as a kid to this day even though there weren't many occurrences so we'll probably just agree to disagree here.

Ok. You don't like it. But can you prove it isn't effective?

I don't really care if its effective. Kids aren't stimulous/response mechmisms. They're people.

It may even be effective, but it's also an asshole move. There are effective options which are not asshole moves.

No. I was made to apologize to everyone, even those completely unaffected. The point was too embarrass me so I'd learn to not do the thing. This seems like essentially the same thing Spoiled kid gets bad grades and still expects rewards. So they found the appropriate way to show that isn't what happens.

It's an asshole move to find an effective way to groom children in to better adults?

Ok.

probably would've been better to not give the console to him and explain why instead of publicly humiliating their child but that's just me

I have no idea if you're joking or mistaking me for someone else, but I have no idea what you're talking about. I don't even have siblings, I'm an only child.

I agree that kids should have to work hard to get what they want. That's the way my parents did it, and for the most part, it worked. But rubbing it in the kid's face and putting the video online really just makes them complete assholes.

No apparently BLAAAAAAAAAAAARGH in front of a camera for people on the Internet to see is the way to go.

Family matters, keep that shit to yourselves seriously. There's no telling how long this is going to stay up too. There's no comparison to be made with a one-time apology here.

Maybe the parents can take an active role in the child's education?

Maybe work with his teachers to see what areas he needs to improve in, and look into getting him tutoring to help him improve in those areas?

If the parents can't afford to hire a tutor of their own, maybe they could look into any of the free after-school programs most schools have that provide tutors, or at least a safe and encouraging space for kids to do their homework and learn?

Maybe the parents could sit down with the kid and explain to him the true value of an education and hard work, set realistic goals and expectations, and marry this with strict and consistent consequences for when these goals aren't met?

...nah. Let's just embarrass the kid, laugh in his face, and put it on the internet. Because that's parenting. It'll TOTALLY work!

Shit like this makes me angry.

you said it was a joke someone would consider that child abuse. i disagreed. not sure what you misunderstood.

if it makes you feel better, you lost me as well. you dont even have siblings? huh?

This is not right. If it were an adult it would be funny. But don't fuck with some poor kid's head like that. Even worse to put it online and humiliate him even more. Bad grades or not, it's still shitty parenting.

No its an asshole move to find an asshole way to groom children into better adults, if they're not too rage-filled from all the times you tried to apply a life lesson in a way that got you yer yuks and plenty of youtube views.

Your post was unclear if you were recalling an old post of mine or were bringing up an example you got from somewhere else.

I understand them not wanting to reward poor grades and bad behavior, but there are better ways to do it than humiliating the kid on Christmas and posting it on the internet. The kid looks to be very young, which makes this even worse.

What a spoilt shit. You did bad in school and expect good rewards? Ha no.
This thread, yo. Saying the parents are bad over a spoilt kid prank. Wow.

It's christmas you jackass! you don't do that to a kid on christmas no matter how bad his grades were you dumb fuck. god, it's people like you and people like the jackass filming this shit that causes kids to do terrible things when they grow up.

And what if this is the way they found best works for their individual child? Or do you believe all children are the exact same?

Why do you assume everyone treats Christmas the same way you do?

If anything I'd laugh at that BLAAAAAAAAAAAARGH guy because he sounds too fucking stupid.

Shit, I'll be putting this in my Worms Clan Wars speechbank. XD

we have no idea what interventions the parents have or haven't done. all we can judge them on is this shitty thing they did do and decided to share with the world.

I'm pretty sure rewarding kids for bad behavior with expensive gifts would make kids end up as worse adults then the ones that get a prank pulled on them and are told that they can have the gift when they do better and deserve it.

Well, that's one way to get the kid to hate his family.
Assholes.

Pretty much. Hope they take lots of pictures at his high school graduation cause that's the last time they're gonna see him!

This really isn't an effective way of handling this. It's extremely overblown compared to the crime (low grades in 4th grade OH GOD NO)

I also like of we're comparing low grades to bad behavior now. They do not coincide.

Ding ding ding.

These parents are better than literally every parent who rewards their shitty kid with presents.

Can you please show some proof of these claims you make?

Uh if this kid becomes an unstable indiviudal because he was tricked into not getting a ps4 then I think there's some deep underlying issue with this kid that we don't know about.

Why on earth do you think I would want to do that? I have no interest in conversing with you on this subject considering how you've treated others here. Go bother someone else. We both know most evidence is totally anecdotal anyway. A complete waste of time.

People hold grudges, even against family.

Why do you assume everyone treats Christmas the same way you do?

I don't know how you celebrate this holiday but where I'm from we don't use the holiday to prank and mock our kids on the freaking internet. If they were dead set on encouraging their kid to raise his grade then they should have hidden the ps4 a few days after christmas day and bring it back to him when his grades were up. That's how my parents did it when my grades were low. These parents are scum and I feel bad for the kids of anyone in this thread who encourages this bullshit.

we have no idea what interventions the parents have or haven't done. all we can judge them on is this shitty thing they did do and decided to share with the world.

Somehow, I strongly doubt that parents willing to publicly humiliate their kid like this really did all they could to help the kid improve his grades. I mean, if they're so susceptible to doing the "easy" thing, why should I believe that they put in the real work to help their kid improve in school?

But yes, I suppose we "don't know."

The problem with this is the public shaming of a little kid and allowing someone who isn't the parent (the uncle in this case) to not only be involved in this public punishment but to actually take joy from it.

What the fuck reason is there for teaching that kid that a part of his family enjoys making him feel like shit?

I would say getting bad grades is bad behavior. It's pretty much your main responsibility at that age and he's obviously not doing a very good job at handling his responsibilities.
