As said before we don't know the full story, could be that he always wanted one, has been nagging his parents for ages and since the accident has idly dropped it into conversation once or twice.
However, I do wish news stories would focus more on the people who DON'T do the right thing, as a kind of shame thing. The kid's going to be treated like a hero for a while and it will always be one of his key memories but at the end of the day why should he be rewarded for doing the right thing? If he hadn't he would have lost his father if not his own life too, seems like a "duh i defnitly shud do this rite" situation. I believe in incentives for doing the right thing but there should be a point where you say "what, you want a reward? for doing the only proper thing? go to your room and think about that a second"
