Kidney Stones: Holy Shit, what just happened!

First time (and I hope it's the last) was a year ago. Worst time ever and the pain was constant and is beyond anything I've experienced. Ended up in the ER.
Do not want ever again!!!

Pretty much. First time in my life I called an ambulance for myself. The lady on the phone was all like "from 1-10 what is the pain like?"

I was just crouched over at this point, wretching and dribbling and kind of wheezed out "fucking 10" lol. I drink a LOT of water and cranberry juice now. Do not want again.

I have had kidney stones twice. The pain is the worst thing ever. WAY worse than broken bones or the like. I've waaaaaaay cut down my soda intake and upped my water intake, because fuck ever going through that shit again.

Ok I have perhaps a stupid question. Is there a possibility that a kidney stone damages something on its way out?

Never had one, but my mother had liver stones and she had to go to surgery for that. I also remember that she passed out because of the pain...

Yeeesh that doesn't sound like something I ever want to have.
*continues to only drink water on weekdays*
*continues to limit alcohol and Soda to weekends*
*prays*

Had it happen to my dad and a friend of mine, an older guy (he was mid-40's). I think older men are more at risk, but I'm not sure if age is really a big factor.
Think of the water as the coolant running through your car keeping everything running smoothly, if you don't drink enough gunk starts building up.
That's a myth. It'll just make you pee more.

Myth 2: Drinking more water flushes more toxins from the body

The kidneys are good at flushing toxins using the water provided through normal thirst. More water just adds more volume, it doesn't change the amount of waste that is flushed from the body.

"You don't increase the clearance of toxins from the body you simply excrete those toxins in a larger volume, which simply means more episodes of urination," Goldfarb said.

I tend to get them when I drink lots of soda. I usually get very small ones once every few to six months. These I can pass without seeking medical attention.

I'll get an extremely painful one once every five years or so. They require pain meds and flomax.

My last round I was passing 3 by the time I was taking the CT scan. One passing from each kidney and one already in the bladder.

This was one of them:
I hope you keep those as souvenirs. Those are cool m

2mm and they gave you dilaudid? I have an 8.5mm and only needed ketorolac.

I was in the ER a month ago for mine. After a month of pain and pissing blood every few days, I'm getting a lithotripsy. My appointment is actually in 45 minutes.

The place doesn't open up until 6:30. It's also a procedure that requires you to get a ride, as they put you under for it.

I'm moments away now. Kinda nervous. A lithotripsy beats the hell out of you, apparently. They say my back is going to be bruised like crazy.

I got one a few years ago, worst pain ever indeed.

It sure wasn't soda that caused it though, because I haven't seriously drink that since my teenage years and I'm 31. Maybe milk? I dunno, I used to drink that a lot more in the past, so maybe...(nowadays, i mostly drink it whenever i eat cookies, and that isnt everyday)

Makes me glad in my choice of not drinking sugar and getting lots of water! Knowing my luck I'd prolly get some at some point anyway.

Don't look at that doctors other videos, I made the wrong choice of viewing a no scapel vasectomy, I should get one but now I'm not so sure!

OP, get better soon and drink lots of water!

I had kidney stones, they're no fucking joke. I was vomiting because I was in so much pain. I had morphine at the hospital and it didn't even touch it.

I stopped drinking soda and started drinking 4-8 litres of water a day back in 2012. Mainly to lose weight, but also because of this.

In 2013 I had an x-ray on my kidneys. One of my kidneys appeared to have a lot of stones in it. The other was clear. The doctor says that it's very likely one will end up trying to work itself out of my system within the next few years.

I passed one about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Certainly one of the most agonizing things I've ever been through. Get your Dr to prescribe you some Flomax and keep some pain meds handy and you'll be pretty well prepared next time it happens.

Consider yourself lucky, OP. I've recently "removed" a 7x5mm kidney stone that was blocking my ureter. Then The doctor inserted a Double-J stent so the kidney stone dust wouldn't come out ripping everything. Since I couldn't feel anything below my waist, I had a sound inserted you know where so I wouldn't piss myself, etc.

That sound was fucking hell on earth. I offered 100 bucks so the nurse would just dope me because I couldn't stand that shit, unfortunately I had to endure all that crap.

Then I proceeded to piss magma for almost 2 weeks.

In other words: drink water until you want to puke or face hell.

EDIT: my urine was also pure pus. Infection, etc. I don't miss those days.

This just had to be one of the first things I read in the morning....

I drink a lot of diet soda, never had a kidney stone luckily. I'm probably still screwed anyway right? I imagine there's one sitting there waiting for the right moment.

Just water for me today...

What the fuck guys? I came into this thread hoping for reassurance, support and solidarity. I leave filled with terror

I ended up in A&E at 6:00 on Sunday morning due to intense pain in my lower abdomen. The pain passed after I was given some decent drugs but they found blood in my urine sample and asked me to come back the next day for a CT scan. The result was that I have one large stone that's left my kidney and I will pass it at some point soon and I also have 2 small stones still in my kidney. They want me to start pissing into a sieve so I can catch the thing for them to analyse it but how mental am I going to look talking a sieve to the toilet in work?

Worst part is knowing it's there and will come out soon. Every piss I have is now filled with terror and tension. Like a much less fun game of Buckaroo where instead of a donkey flinging bits of plastic everywhere, the surprise is my urethra getting ripped to shreds :(

I got one 3 years ago. Nothing can quite describe the excruciating agony these things provide. Not sure how big my one was because at the time I was too big to be scanned. It was a wake up call and I've since lost so much weight. In a way I'm grateful, but I wish to never, ever get one again. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

I was getting them every 3 months or so for years. Some were just some stomach pain and discomfort, others put me in the hospital. I finally had enough and changed my diet. Switched from nothing but soda to diet peach snapple, ate healthier, went to he gym and lost 50 lbs. Not a single stone in over 6 months. Unfortunately, for some reason, my fucking hair is now thinning like mad. No family history of baldness You just can't win.

I see this thread right before I go to sleep and I can't stop grabbing my crotch. Just thinking about kidney stones makes me wince.

Both my dad and my grandpa have had them so I'm afraid

It's the only reason I drink as much water as I do. Seeing my dad in so much pain when I was Kid (first time he got them and the worst) was pretty traumatic

I had one hit me last monday morning at 1am. I drove myself to the ER and that thing passed into Ureter before I got on pain meds. I felt great so I left the ER with nothing. 3 hours later I start getting crazy waves of pain. So I went back to the ER . The stone was stuck in my Ureter and it didn't fully pass till Friday evening.

I had kidney stones this year but I drink lots of water, my doctor told me that eating lost of red meat also increase the chance of getting them! Eat chicken and drink water guys, you don't want this!

I'm still amazed I lasted 1 week without going to the doctor to see what was happening to me. I literally dealt with the vomit and pain just so I wouldn't miss school! If you guys want some miracle medicine for this, get sublingual ketorolac, one of those every 8 hours (or when you get extreme pain) will numb your entire torso in like 5 minutes, I felt like I revived with this medicine and is not as hardcore as the OP's medicine.

STOP DRINKING SODA! MY GOD!!!

*grabs cranberry juice*

yikes
Ahem. Nice myth.

Its LEMON juice. Straight lemon juice and about a 6oz per day.

Cranberry juice contains oxalates... Which cause stones.

I made the switch to lemon juice a while back and haven't had a stone since. I've had 2 surgeries to have large stones removed. Passed about 20 of them in the past 10 or so years, largest passed was 7mm.

I'm a goddamn pro.

Edit: for the record I don't drink soda but once or twice a year.

my father got kidney stones on 7 different occassions starting from age 29 and beyond. Doctor told him it was caused by too much tea and ice cream. other things contribute but on his 4th kidney stone that is what the doc said back then.

Ice cream! Is nothing sacred?

If it makes you feel any better I never felt it when it passed, and even if I did, it would of been nothing compared to pain I felt when it was passing down to my bladder.
