Kidney Stones: Holy Shit, what just happened!

Not open for further replies.
Am 30.
Drink 2 litres of diet coke a day pretty much every single day for the last decade.
Also eat half a kilo of red meat nearly every single day.

Only male in the family that never had kidney stones.

Come at me gaf.

Fwiw, couldnt find anything about diet sodas increasing the likelyhood of kidney stones. No surprise, given that they're 99% water.
Enjoy (while you can)... but remember... the clock is ticking. Tick.... Tock... Tick... Tock...

1L Milk a day, never had a stone. :/

i probably averaged a gallon of diet soda/day for the past 15+ years and ain't got shit yet.

holy crap i wonder if my body is saving up.

The overall risk for most people is really low. You may not get one until you are over the age of 30 like most people or never at all.

Mine is hereditary. I got my first on around 20. They suck, but with modern medicine, they're really not that big of a deal.

I just read this

People who get kidney stones may benefit from boiling vegetables that are high in oxalates, which is a substance often found in these stones. Boiling can remove up to 87 percent of the oxalates in vegetables, while steaming only removes up to 53 percent of these anti-nutrients, according to a study published in the "Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry" in April 2005. Vegetables high in oxalates include some green leafy vegetables, beets, sweet potatoes, okra, lentils and soybeans.

I never had one and I hope to God never will.

Like everyone said about that video, the one at 2:40 is the stuff of nightmares.

My sister and cousin both had some in their early 20s. All they ever drank was dark cola.

If you never had them good for you, just be humble. Some horrible shit could always happen not even related to that.

I thought I was the epitome of health and next thing you know..congrats you have cancer.

To anyone else dealing with kidney stones or anyone who has them in the future: get a fucking antibiotic. Just stay on them.

So when I first went to the ER when I originally got my stones, they prescribed me an antibiotic. They said it was in case the stones passed and sliced me up on the way out. They didn't want me to get an infection. I took them for the week they prescribed me, but my stones didn't pass so it ended up being pointless.

They didn't prescribe them to me when I got my lithotripsy last Wednesday. Huuuuuge mistake on their part. In less than 24 hours, I was in the ER thinking I was actually going to die. The pain was the worst thing I have ever felt. It was so bad it was making me throw up every few minutes. For 3 hours, I was unable to even keep down a sip of water. I constantly felt like I had to pee, but nothing would come out. I started to get dehydrated. Eventually nothing but blood was coming out of my dick. Not just bloody pee, which I've gotten used to at this point. Just blood.

When the pain got so severe I started to have trouble breathing, I woke my girlfriend up and got her to drive me to the ER. They gave me 2 liters of fluid (not on a drip, actually pumped into me), and antibiotic via IV, Toradol, Zofran, and Dilaudid. Despite all of that, it still hurt. It hurt less, but I never had a moment of actual comfort.

I spent the next 3 days absolutely miserable. When the pain hit, it would turn my stomach. My bladder was constantly aching. I went from sweating to shivering at the drop of the dime. I woke up 6 or 7 times a night to pee, each time having to fall back to sleep while dealing with the intense pain. It was fucking horrible.

Now that I've been on antibiotics for a few days, it's fine. I'm pissing out stones, and it's really not as bad as I was led to believe it would be. Flomax helps. The pain no longer even warrants Percocet, I've just had a couple Tylenol today.

Every time I come back here the stories get worse.

I have stopped drinking soda completely since I came in here last week.

That'll be extremely healthy for you! Thing is, I barely drink soda. Coffee and tea are my vices. I can't give them up, either.

I left out a great bit: I haven't pooped since Tuesday. Percocet has completely clogged me up. Can't poop. I eat, nothing comes out. I ate about a dozen prunes on Saturday. No poop. I drank a glass of prune juice, ate fruit, ate greens, avoided meat. Not even nugget. I haven't taken one since very early Sunday morning, and as of right now I still haven't pooped.

This thread is my worst nightmare. I'm not a religious man, but if I ever get stones, I will pray to everything holy that I don't go through all that.

Currently going through this. Honestly the pain has not been that bad, just a few hour burst of pain. Thursday was the worst day by far so I went to the doctor. The CT scan revealed its a decent size (cant remember the mm), but it should pass in a few days. Well its now Monday and it has yet to pass. The pain at this point is just a nagging pain and not excruciating. Been drinking so much water, I have no idea why this thing hasnt come out. Hopefully soon as I fear the worst than childbirth pain that I assume is on its way.

Luckily, they eventually got Dilaudid into me and after about 10 minutes, my pain went from a 9.9 to a 0. Thank you modern medicine for creating that wonderful narcotic!

Kids, remember, drink your fluids often and don't hesitate to run into the ER at the first sign of unexplainable and intense lower back pain!

Be fuckin careful with that dilaudid. I had a few of them like 6 for some intestinal pain years ago and the withdrawl from such a small amount was hell. Almost went to the ER for that alone. It is a motherfucker of all motherfuckers and I wouldn't take that pill again for anything. The pain was easier to tolerate than the withdrawl from 2 days of use. I was on percocet for 6 weeks for a shattered wrist and no withdrawl hardly at all compared to that damn pill. Not even close to the feeling or relief the percocet gave me either.

I'm not at all religious and I was pleading with God to end my pain on the drive to the ER. When I got to the window, there was no one there. I kept calling out for help, but no one seemed to be around. I ended up having to scream "Can anyone fucking help me out here, or do you want me to die in your lobby?" This motherfucker casually rolls out of an office behind the front desk, not even standing up.

I knew it was a shitty hospital I was going to, but it's 10 minutes closer and I honestly felt like I was on death's door. It took them about half an hour to even get me a single thing for the pain. My girlfriend was the one to get me a blanket, water, and a bottle to piss blood in.

The whole ordeal was just a case of every single thing possible going wrong. It was a perfect storm of shit.

Started the same way for me, but got worse and worse as time went on. No shame in getting it blasted, man. Now peeing them out is pretty much painless! I'll see a little rock or two when I pee, but only one has hurt so far. It wasn't even that bad, just a stinging in my dick for a few minutes. There were like 5 little stones when it happened.

Geezuz, that whole ordeal sounds like something out of a bad dream. Fuck man, sorry to hear you had to go through all that. You mentioned still being constipated. Are you still on percs? Is that why you haven't pooped yet?

I tend to get them when I drink lots of soda. I usually get very small ones once every few to six months. These I can pass without seeking medical attention.

I'll get an extremely painful one once every five years or so. They require pain meds and flomax.

My last round I was passing 3 by the time I was taking the CT scan. One passing from each kidney and one already in the bladder.

This was one of them:

Some people just give no fucks. How is it that you haven't altered your diet/lifestyle by now? :P

Took my last percocet Sunday at 1:00 AM. Still haven't pooped. I've been eating light the past few days. I had a kale smoothies tonight, so I expect it to happen tomorrow morning.

I could only take 1/4 of a tablet at a time. Any more and I'd feel like shit. What's weird is that I used to take oxycontin for fun (I was a dumb kid) and it never made me sick. A full percocet makes me really nauseous, though. Can't stand the stuff. I've found Ketorolac is my favorite painkiller so far. It's just an NSAID. Like ibuprofen, but stronger.

You should maybe mention that to your doctor.

Or take matters into your own hands and do the laxative suppository pincer attack combo. (This might actually be a dangerous combo don't do that)

Hope you feel better soon man.

Dude, I'm so sorry that you have to go through all of this. I can't even imagine.
And all of you guys that get these things multiple times a year. Fuck all of that. Do you have jobs that are cool with you taking all of that time off for these?
hopefully not Amazon lol

Yeah, my follow up is Wednesday and I'll be mentioning it. Apparently it's a common side effect. I think I'll have some magic later tonight or in the morning, though. A kale smoothie does wonderful things for my guts. It's not as effective as a nice cup of coffee, but it works.

I'm totally feeling better today. The pain is dull, not even worth taking Tylenol for. I just had a bunch of stone fragments in my pee a couple minutes ago, but they didn't hurt a bit. Honestly. With a urethral dilator (Flomax) and enough water, they just come out with no fight at all.

These threads are some of the scariest shit out there. You want a horror story to tell to your friends around the campfire to seriously scare them shitless? Read some of these posts.

chrriiisssstttt I think I'll stop drinking soda forever now and buy a few britta filters.

Whoa guys I stopped drinking soda in 2009. In late 2014, I started drinking 7 up, Ginger Ale, and fruit soda again, extremely rarely. Haven't had Coke, Dr. Pepper, or Mt. Dew though for six years. Am I gonna be OK?

You will get ginger ale flavored kidney stones.

But no seriously i think most people are just fine, you'd have to eat a shit load of red meat and organs, drink a ton of soda and/or alcohol, and never drink any water. For some they may be more genetically disposed to kidney stones, especially as you get older.

If that's the case, just try to be more careful what you eat and drink. The less you eat (overall and per meal), the more time for your liver and kidneys to process, and the more water you drink (in lieu of soda, alcohol, and juices) the better. While your liver and kidneys are pretty good at processing calories/nutrients, the less complex you make it for them the better they will function. I try not to have massive meals, if I have alcohol I try not to mix it with heavy meals, and if I drink a soda I will chase it with a lot of water.

For what its worth I had minor back pains last week which some say are precursors to kidney stones, and have been squeezing a lemon into my water twice a day. Pain seems to be a lot better - almost gone - it could have just been stretched muscles but its a well known folk remedy/preventative for kidney stones and pretty cheap and easy. Won't be as much help if kidney stones are large or causing intense pain.

When your body doesn't get enough calcium from your diet, it leeches it from your bones. Calcium in this form contributes to kidney stone formation.

Milk causing kidney stones is a myth caused by laypeople seeing "calcium deposits" and jumping to the wrongest conclusion..
