Kids' No. 1 holiday wish? PS4 for boys (CNET)

Performed on behalf of online cash-back shopping site Ebates, the survey probed deeply into the desires of 12- to 17-year-olds.

88 percent of them said they most wanted to get some sort of gadget, come family gifting time. The most desired item among them was the iPhone.

You might think that the survey somehow equated "iPhone" with "cell phone." But, no. These kids know their brands, and only 12 percent of them were most desperate for a Samsung Galaxy phone, as opposed to 32 percent for Apple's offering.

Indeed, the second most desired gadget was another Apple product: the iPad.

The iPhone wasn't the most popular choice of gadget among boys. They -- clearly needing to release copious amounts of pent-up boyishness -- chose the PlayStation 4 as their No. 1.

However, such was the iPhone dominance among the girls' desires (41 percent) that the overall results gave Apple the win.

buy me a Samsung if old.

That's half the market right there. Now Sony needs to lock up the grown ass men who act like little boys and they'll fucking own this holiday season.

PS4 is for kids?

This flies in the face of those who don't think smartphones and tablets are competing with PS4. Very, very, very few parents are going to buy their kids both a smartphone/tablet and a games console this Christmas. 10 years ago, the games console would have been top of that list.

Also, a tablet is probably a better buy as a parent for their child than a games console. Like a PC, it's more versatile, has tons of free stuff on it and also educational apps in addition to games.

For some reason the idea of buying a kid under 16 an iPad or an iPhone just doesn't sit well with me. Though a games console is not so bad.

Knowing parents these days, they'll probably go with the cellphone since it doubles as Lowjack.

Surprisingly good news for gaming.... I am still amazed it was not an apple product and am even more amazed that the top item isn't even in toysrus top gift list. Lol

But it is the top of that list...

"The survey probed deeply into the desires of 12-17 year olds"...was it really necessary to word it hat way? Lol

Boys want the PS4, they aren't asking for smartphones/tablets in addition to the PS4. Next year my kids get new phones and minis, we do every other year. But with steam box coming out we may skip my sons upgrades next year and go with that instead.

The "pent-up boyishness" line is stupid. Playing video games isn't boyish. Tons of girls, women, and people of other genders play video games.

This is where I appreciate Microsoft's marketing style more. They present X-Box akin to a home theatre, set top box, blu-ray player and all in one entertainment solution. Very much a tablet that streams to your TV.

Sony on the other hand is all... BUT OUR NEW $400 DOLLAR TOY

The games industry is today larger than the film industry. Some respect thnk plox!

To be fair, most of the biggest successes in the past decade or so of film have been movies that pandered mainly to children/manchildren. Also, Sony's box isn't the one that comes with a waggle camera.

Most people would want all gaming platforms to sell as much as possible

Help the industry out/make devs money/devs afford the standard hookers and coke etc.

As such I think getting the younger ones interested in the new consoles is a good way to do that personally

Except it isn't portable and most people go Apple for tablets. If they want to stream from a tablet the Apple TV is $99.

This shows that even kids have more of an interest for PS4 much more so than either Xbox One or Wii U.

I agree. Most people own a tablet for their living room fix nowadays.

Surprising. Is Sony driving a super-efficient PR camapaign that targets these ages or are these kids just well informed?

Honestly I think the internet is selling these consoles better than anything else at present

And the online message has been strongly PS4 since before E3
